Title: Meow, roof? Croak.
Post by: Nuclear1 on March 20, 2007, 04:09:11 pm
http://menufoods.com/recall/index.html

If you've got a dog, live in the US and Canada, and feed them any of these foods, toss them out and get something else for the time being.  There's some ingredient in these particular brands that has been discovered to cause kidney failure in dogs.

Thank you very much for the info.  Thankfully, I haven't been giving my girls anything on that list, but I could hardly breathe reading through it.  If Nutmeg wasn't so prone to hairballs that she needs special food to prevent them, I'd have been giving them half a dozen of those brands depending on what was on sale.  (gulp)

I'm going to send links to those lists to all the other animal lovers I know, and I request everyone else here do the same.  I had two cats that eventually had to be put to sleep because they were in horrific pain from kidney failure.  Towards the end before I finally gave in and took him to the vet to be put to sleep, Ptolemy crawled onto my lap and just started moaning pitifully.

You don't want to go through that.

My dogs eat humans, so they should be ok.

Well, we're in Europe, but I'll keep an eye out for these anyway just in case, both my pets are in no condition to be eating dodgy food at their age.

Thanks :)

For some reason I thought this was about a cat being pushed off a roaf by a frog.

Must admit, I thought this was about cats, roofs and frogs in some way when I first saw it too :nervous:

I'm used to seeing it spelled as 'Woof', I always thought that was a standard, which shows there's always something to learn :)

My cat is a good enough hunter that he eats mainly the unlucky prey animals in our neighborhood (we believe he actually killed our neighbors' pet rabbit. I think they think so too, but they haven't pressed charges or anything, thankfully).

My other cat, though... can't hunt at all. So she's lucky her cat food isn't on the list.

Well, presumably the dug was feeling a bit rough.

Can you be more specific?

My cute little stupid box-of-rocks brain-dead puppy, Odette, eats Eukanuba every day; she hasn't had a problem yet.

My cute little stupid box-of-rocks brain-dead puppy, Odette, eats Eukanuba every day; she hasn't had a problem yet.

Not all Eukanuba types are being recalled, though; check this list:
Quote
EUKANUBA DOG

Bites in Gravy 5.3 oz Pouches
Puppy with Savory Chicken
Puppy with Hearty Beef
Adult with Savory Chicken
Adult with Hearty Beef
Adult with Lamb and Rice
Adult with Beef, Pasta and Vegetables
Reduced Fat with Savory Chicken
Senior with Savory Chicken
Chunks in Gravy 5.5 oz Cans
Puppy with Savory Chicken
Adult with Savory Chicken
Adult with Hearty Beef
Adult with Hearty Stew with Beef
Senior with Hearty Beef

Those are the possibly affected types.  If Odette isn't eating any of those, she should be fine; you might also have a clean box of the above as well. :)

(Note:  You can check what specific types are being recalled like that by clicking on each brand on the menu page).

Ah crap... she has Adult with Lamb&Rice iirc.

Don't panic just yet.  Just grab some Purina or something for time being and keep an eye out on her for a time.  The most common side effects of kidney disease is going often or in large volumes (i.e. peeing a lot a lot), or becoming more lethargic than usual.  If you're really worried, just give your vet a call--I'm sure you won't be the first to do it. :)

NVM she only eats dry food. Wet food is effected, not dry.

They discovered it was rat poison that somehow got into the food that was causing kidney failure in dogs and cats.

Either they use rat-traps around the place for hygience, or someone has a grudge.... :(

Well, all that matters is that the word got out quickly, and people did what they could to keep their pets safe.  You wouldn't believe the number of IAMS bags that the trashmen had to come for just in our neighborhood alone. :)

I really do feel bad for the owners of the ten that died, though.  No pet should have to suffer from that sort of negligence. :(

Agreed, I lost a Siamese to Liver Failure once, though he was about 16 years old, which isn't bad for a Pedigree cat (pure-breeds are more susceptible to problems normally) it's never nice losing a pet.

I don't do too bad on animals though, the moggy I've got at the moment is 19, though, in all honesty, I severely doubt he's going to get to 20.

You named a cat with the name of an Earth Alliance cruiser?!?

...

Well I did the contrary. I named a Hecate and its Admiral using names coming straight from...my dogs.

How can you say that?

Because he's extremely ill. He hasn't eaten for about 4 days, he has practically no teeth left and spends 23 and a half hours a day sleeping at the top of the stairs because he hasn't got the strength left to go anywhere else, he goes to the vet on Monday for a last ditch attempt to help him, but I personally doubt the outcome will be good.

Basically, there comes a stage with pets where you have to decide whether you are keeping them alive for them or for yourself. It's a horrible decision, and I'm really not looking forward to taking it.

Mobius; she was named by GEB. She was a GEB dog, though didn't have the personality to be a guide. She was part of the O litter; the 15th litter in the year. We trained her to be obedient, silent, cautious, and friendly. She achieved all aspects required, though was not work-oriented. We kept her after she failed the exam. Oh, and she's a puppy, not a kitty.

To those with older dogs: I know how it feels. We had a beautiful dog named Astin, she passed away in October 2004, from age and from cancer. She held on with life until my oldest sister, Alexa, would let her go in peace.

If you want, you can see how serene she was toward her death. The image is attached.

@ Flipside:
I'm sorry to hear that.  It's hollow comfort, I'm sure, but 19 is a good long life for a cat.  If you hadn't been there to take care of him, he never would have lasted that long.  When they get to this point in their lives, I honestly think love is about the only thing keeping them going.  Their poor bodies are just shot.

Wow.  We must have the similar breeds, or so, because that looks exactly like my dog.  Mine's only about 4 right now, so I'm mostly just worried she'll pass away when I'm not there (i.e. out in the Real World).  Same goes with my three cats.

Thanks Perihelion, yeah, it's been a pretty rough ride, he got very ill, and we took him to the vets, he seemed to be getting better for a while, but now it's like he's given up, which to be honest, I think he has.
