Sorry , I didn't know where else to post , or who else to ask for help on this topic ...
Freespace2 doesn't work anymore ( it's a tragedy to me ) . When I tried to run either Freespace2 , or Freespace Open , it gave me this message that Freespace2 can't be run from a drive root directory .
This happened after I reinstalled Windows . I tried reinstalling it , but I still got the same problem .
I don't know what to do , so can please someone help me ?
-
Aint that sure about this but make sure that there are no spaces in the path yo your FS folder such as c:\Program Files\Freespace 2 but use paths such as c:\Games\Freespace2, dont know as I have said if this affects this problem or not
EDIT: Also make sure you have followed karajormas FAQ(The installion section) and see if you have made any errors http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/intro.html

You using XP? You using FS2 Retail? If so, right-click on the shortcut to FS2, go to Properties, then Compatibility, then set for Win98/Me.
If you're using FSOpen, re-install your graphics card drivers from your manufacturer (prolly ATi or nVidia), as M$ prolly put their own crappy ones in when you re-installed. Keep in mind, to correctly install new drivers, at least for an nVidia, you're supposed to uninstall the old one first. Let me know if you need help or whatever. :D

I had it installed in D:\Games\FreeSpace2 . I had the normal version - not the SCP . When it started not working , I reinstalled everything and also installed the SCP . But still got the same "Freespace2 can't be run from a drive root dirrectory" .
Also , I dunno if it changes anything , but when I turned on the launcher , and selected to launch the game , it said that I need to run the launcher first . After that I got the "can't be run from a drive root directory" .

That seems to be describing a similar problem on Linux. No idea why it's affecting you when you are down more than one level though.

Why I am I getting the error ? I have Windows XP SP3 .

SP3???? I didn't know there was a SP3??
Anyway.......
:welcome:
Welcome to the HLPBB. Exits are to your left, right, and anywhere else you can imagine. In case of attack, there is a flamethrower under your seat. However, due to budget cuts, they have been filled with water. Plasma rifles are located in the weapons lockers, which are only openable by admins, :v:-gods, or a hyper intelligent shade of the color blue. When wandering the corridors, be sure to check out our various locales, such as disco Inferno, the Babylon Project embassy, or the memorial to the GTVA Colossus, the biggest water gun the universe has ever seen. When wandering the ducts, you may stumble upon Carl the shivan. If so, give him your lunch and back away slowly. Maybe you'll live. Thank you and have a pleasant stay.
Please, no mentioning the third installment of our favourite game, it ain't gonna happen. Also it's worth mentioning that if you're gonna start a thread about politics, religion or evolution, it's gonna start a flame war, so be prepared!
Oh, and don't take advice from Takashi! :D
Meanwhile, can you give us a screenshot of your FreeSpace2 folder and it's contents, maybe we will be able to work this one out for you!
-
I knew that I'd be getting the HLPBB ... :D
I can't give the screenshot of the folder , because it's deleted currently , and I'm reinstalling it .
Oh , and about the Windows XP SP3 , I think they're modified by someone to be a SP3 . Though everything works fine , except for reespace2 . However , I've just searched for Service Pack 3 on google , and KINDA found it .
-
hmm...
Well, no SP3 exists officially, so it sounds like this... thing may have screwed up your windows install...
so to start, run, and type "SFC /scannow" (no quotes), and if that doesnt work, do a repair install of windows I'd say. And don't install unofficial microsoft updates!
-
I managed to get it to work . But only the SCP . It lags though .
-
Eh, go to your Device Manager, see what your video card drivers are (supplied by Microsoft, or your manufacturer). - Provider should be nVidia or ATi, not Mickeysoft. :p
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
if it isn't, go to Nvidia.com or ATI.com depending on what kind fo card you have, and download the manufacturer drivers for your card.
-
Some people (read: me) need to use the Mickeysoft drivers because they can't find the ATI ones.
Now, if you can find me an ATI driver for the Mobility Radeon 7500 that won't crash my comp, be my guest.

right, im not reading all that, but i got a similar error a while back. check that the freespace2 folder is actually named FreeSpace2 exactally, not Free Space 2, freespace 2, free space2 or anything like that. it tends to make a difference. it did for me.
-
That's the no spaces allowed bug, I believe it's been fixed. Not sure, though... Turey, I'll check for a driver for you. You using XP?
-
ShadowGorrath, when you reinstalled windows... How did you do it? Did you format your entire HD? Did you just do a reinstall on the old windowns?
Maybe you have some leftover registry ****e screwing around... Dunno, just a guess...
Did you try installing FS on a different path? Or are you trying the same D:\Games\Freespace2 all the time?
Have you tried different builds?
-
I don't know . A friend did that .
And I think there is some leftover registry , I dunno .
And I only tried to install it ONLY to d:\games\FreeSpace2 .
However the SCP works for me .
-
I have this same error with Freespace 2 retail on my brand new Windows XP system. What I think it is is that if you used the Installer to get Freespace 2 (and didn't install it from your CDs), the game doesn't like not having any registry values that says it's installed (as far as I can tell, the Installer doesn't actually INSTALL, it just downloads, someone correct me if I'm wrong). However, the SCP works fine.
-
SCP works to me too . But ... How can I install the Sol:History Campaign then ?
It needs Inferno vps in the main folder and some other files in DATA folder . I heard SCP doesn't like that .
-
Are you running the FreeSpace2.exe first and using that to set up your video card settings etc., then pressing apply. I think that sets up the relevant registry settings required.
Also have you patched Freepsace2 to 1.0.2
Scratch that last bit as I think the installer does all that for you!
-
I don't think the registry is in ... I have set up the settings .
-
S:AH is SCP compatible... IIRC, look for S:AH fixed tables.
EDIT:
Shadow has also got an update for his Inferno R1/SCP update he has to upload as well, or so he told me in april.
The problem is not hosting but the fact he has 56k and has to pay for uploads currently, so it's a problem getting the large files for Inferno SCP Shadow Patch mark2 and Sol A: History update patch up to the internet. You can see in Inferno thread where I asked him about this.
Currently, the table files have been fixed, shadow posted them in the other thread, I have them, anyone needs them just pm me, or get them from the links in the other thread.
but theres other issues : mostly to do with needing more up to date graphics for the planets (some are missing and some look bad) and some other things, Shadow says he's fixed these already but he needs to still upload them.
To sum up, currently in order to get S:AH running you need : Multimod system in use, secondrylist in the mod.ini pointing to Freespace Port, InfernoR1+SCP Patch+ShadowsUpdate, and the mediavps. On top of that, you need the Fixed tables from Shadow in your SAH/data/tables directory.

I just found the reason it doesn't work. -no FS2 / SCP registry info exists. Find the 3.6.9 Installer and re-install it. Alternatively, installing BtRL should work... for retail to work, you may have to install that as well. Or, you could just copy the registry settings. Give me a day or so, I'll post them for you.
