I'd like to see what tools the majority of modelers use in this community, and why they use their respective application over another one.
EDIT
I reset the values for the poll and added more 3D applications. All others will be classified as OTHER.
-
You forgot sketchup, and alot of people here use that as well

Ive never heard of it :(
- ill google it.
-
Wings3D
-
Wings3D
That is the one I use mainly because it doesn't have an interface that makes you want to scream. :p
-
Cinema4D, but I'll be damned if I can figure out how to export and get it working ingame.
-
Notice how none of these are on the list?
-
Fix ze poll!
Allow more than one option and add:
Cinema4D
Blender
Wings3D
Sketchup
Gmax
DOGA (maybe)
Rhino3D
Solidworks
SolidEdge
Other CAD
Bryce
Softimage XSI
ZBrush (maybe)
And there are more than those ones too. ;)

TS.... its what i know, easy to use and i can bend it to my will. i have not had a real need to change.
-
Truespace, EASY!?!? :wtf:
-
is for me, i can understand why some people dont like TS though, it gets moody thats for damn sure. on top of that it lacks alot of the advanced features found in newer programs, i just work around all that though.
-
Blender, FTW! :p

You obviously dont mean TS 7 then
-
I myself use Maya 7, its a great program, and so powerful, but what sucks is that its very limited in what format it will allow you export as.
-
Sketchup here
-
Oh so sexy blender!
-
Studio Max :D
Can't stand blenders/milkshapes interfaces.... still kinda wanna learn lightwave or maya, sketchup leaves things too unoptimized.
Truespace... FTL.
-
Sketchup only leaves things unoptimized for the inexperianced user, ;). You cant expect life to do everything for you, so why expect a program too, especially when one comes with an interface so simplistic as sketchups?
-
LOL i guess it depends on what you define simplistic as LOL
Anways...... has anyone used Deep Paint 3d?
-
Would you like me to screenshot sketchup pro and truespace 7? maybe that will make you re think that statement
-
Seen both, used both (assuming pro is about the same as basic). I hated truespace 7 so bloated.
-
Lightwave and Modo.

Do you have any idea how funny that sentence is in context?
-
I use trueSpace 6.6. They totally made a hash of the UI with 7. They made it "pretty", changed all the icons so one can't figure out what does what, and MOVED EVERYTHING AROUND.

little did i know i've punned myself.

i use cinema4d as i´ve a legal 9.1 xl-bundle here....
-
3dsmax7/8.
Have legal versions, love them, and don't see any reason to change to a lesser-known or lesser-used program. Only one I'd consider changing to is Maya.
-
Kill me! :headz: I use Truespace 3.2 ............. It´s what I begun using, what I´ve learned and what I didn´t need to buy at that moment. Also, it still does the job nicely, and don´t have to go exporting any files. The thing is it took me 2 years to learn modeling ( and half that time to learn TS ) and I kind of stuck to it. Though seeing this thread has given me new perspectives. Perhaps I´ll change one day.....

Oh sorry, you were serious.
-
Why are there two Wings 3D options in the poll lol?
-
I'm learning Modo at the moment, does anyone have any experience with it? It's pretty fun.
EDIT: Tried fixing that Wings thing, it won't let me remove poll options :(
-
Blender , simple and fits my purposes well.
It can even do some decent UV mapping on it :)

Shockingly, I have a legal 8 xl one. :p
-
i use rhino and solidworks , im just starting to grtmy head around blender as im trying to wean my self off windows , but i havent done any modding for FS i use both for engineering plans n projects n my free time

Funny cause he had legal copies of 3DSmax or that he was considering Maya?

Blender.

Learning Blender
-
Used Blender ages ago, quite like it. I like Milkshape's simplicity, I keep it installed even when I'm using something else because it's so good for manual optimization. Lets me at the triangles directly, none of this modifier **** or pretending you're working with polygons. Only polygon I need is a triangle, damnit.

See the highlight, sorry for the confusion.

Couldnt agree more, tis why i love sketchup

Stormfronter,
Do you have a character on Anarchy Online the runs around saying "I'm uber"...?
he was on all last weekend.
-
shouldn't that kind of thing be discussed in PMs?

Can't stand having some other program messing it up.. so it's mostly manual editing.. takes alot of time to do a detailed model but at least I control every single aspect of it :p
Tried wings3d and sketchup but didn't like the layout.. it's too clean and doesn't let me do as thorough as in blender but then again I'm a perfectionist when it comes to creating/painting. ;)

No, I've never played that game.

:wtf: Wow, I can hardly believe so many people can put up with TRUESPACE! I can easily understand the large amount of people who use 3d max for example but truespace? Either you guys must have some really good version I'm not familiar with or you just stuck to it because you didn't want to try any other programs...
-
Well, trueSpace 3.2 is free. And trueSpace 6.6 is actually fairly easy to use. You're not forced to work with a triangulated mesh and from at least 5.x (possibly a later version of 4.x) it has an add edge tool which makes it simple to triangulate faces with 4 or more sides exactly how you want.
Somewhere in there they also added an Add Face tool that automatically highlights any area with no face, with a continuous line of edges bounding it, that's under the mouse pointer. Click and there's a face you can fix up by adding new edge across it.
Combined with the Delete Face tool, it's very useful for fixing backwards normals. Delete the face then add it back and it checks the normals of the faces around the new hole and aligns the new face to match.
Another nice thing about not having to fully triangulate a model (until you pof it) is it makes UV mapping easier.
-
I'm never going to touch truespace ever again :ick: . I have a legal edu 3DS Max 7 and I am learning Maya too. If anything these programs are my standard, though I still believe 3ds to be the superior when it comes to optimizing polygons and low poly modeling. Maya, to me, seems better off making several hundred thousand polygon models.

With blender, you simply press f to add a face, x to delete one or w and select flip normal to fix a backwards normal. In fact, you can even recalculate the entire model's normals inside or outside with one click. Triangulation is just ctrl-t and you can UV map IN blender and export it with the texture already on it without having to use some middle ware program like lith-unwrap. Plus once the texture is on the model you can click and drag the foldout points to fix any stretches or things that pop up.

AutoCAD 2007
Then convert the AC07 files to COBs with Blender
Then make sure everything pans out in Truespace
I've not tested it all--but I love AutoCAD 2007. Steep learning curve but once you get the hang of it, you can make anything you can imagine. It's a no-playing-around program, however, so you have to have a design to work with. Pen and paper are welcome to sketch your models and add in distances and measurements.
