Title: Combat sports
Post by: Warp Shadow on March 25, 2008, 12:23:42 am
Well I live in Canada and I'm really bored, sports just don't appeal to me so much anymore, I've got one hobby left that I still actually do and so I spend most of my time playing video games. I went out paintballing for a friends birthday however and it was totally great! I loved it and I got really into paintball for a while. So I go to set up a paint ball party for my birthday now and find out HOW FREAKING EXPENSIVE IT IS!!! Maybe it's it's my province but I'd be paying over $500 to reserve a field so my friends can play and not have their asses kicked. I figure, Okay, maybe we should all just get guns, make a team and kick it in our free time! But noooooo! Paintball guns cost like $300 JUST TO GET A GOOD ONE!!! ANd about $80 for 1000 paintballs. I cannot justify this to my parents! :hopping:

SO I look for other combat sports. The other two I find are laser skirmish and airsoft. First of all, laser skirmish is crapped dressed up as a milsim. It acts all cool but then you're still stuck with your little plastic box going PEW PEW at people with your invisible beams of harmless light and twenty meters away the other guy goes, hmm? Oh what's that? Oh my gun appears to be telling me I'm dead? What the hell happened? So airsoft is the only thing left.

It seems at first to be everything I wanted, fun, fast paced, tactical and it has an element of realism so you DON'T feel like you're playing cowboys and in'jins.  It's even cheap too! Then I find out two things, One: there is no-where to play or buy stuff in my city or outside of it and Two: Airsoft guns are illegal in Canada. SO unless I want to pay $800 and all my firends do too (the honest ones as well since airsoft operates off of the dreaded honor system) I'm out of luck.

So I come here, depressed and bored after days of wasted research, and I ask you guys... Is there anything you can recommend? Anything at all? It doesn't even have to be a run around and shoot eachother game. Just anything to do over the summer that wouldn't be hella boring?

Well, i'm in a similar situation as you. But i like Skiing because it's really fast, and if you're like me (which most people aren't) you can reach wicked speeds on hills like lake Louise down here near Calgary.

Rugby. Seriously. You'll feel more alive than paintball ever made you feel. Charging headfirst into a bloke a clear half foot taller than you and bringing your knee into his chest to score a try. :nosmileytoconveyemotion:

I... play chess?  :nervous:

Anyway, can't you just rent guns? I've once organized a paintball event with some friends of mine and it came to about 10€ for a gun and 100 paintballs for each participant with the field included.

You can also mix two existing sports together in order to create new and even more dangerous activities. Activities such as ski-boxing and water biathlon.

Ah yes. Reminds me of my Alpine snowball competitions :D

First one to wipe out down the hill from a barrage of snowballs fails :D

@Warp Shadow: Airsoft guns aren't illegal, several of my friends have them.

I second haloboy100 on skiing, best sport ever. If you're just starting, get some second hand equipment after you've rented a few times, don't get new equipment or you'll kill it while learning.

Mix hunting and sex...you hunt down women and 0wn them... ;7
That's called rape.

Hmm... I don't know... can you call it hunting anymore? I mean, if you're in a forest and a moose walks over to you and says "Shoot me.", can it be defined as hunting?

If you replace moose with person then it's still murder.

Bah. "Murder" doesn't equal to "assisting in suicide".

1.  Paintball is reasonably cheap if you go to an existing range.  We went to one not far from Edmonton for a buddy's bachelor party, and it worked out to $50/person for about 6 hours of play (that included gun rental, range time, clothing, and paintballs).  With a club membership its even cheaper.

2.  Airsoft guns are not illegal in Canada.  Replica firearms ARE illegal in Canada.  Thus, if you buy an Airsoft gun that is NOT classified as a replica firearm, it's perfectly legal.  Some [informal] guidelines:  Should not contain markings identifying it as, or similar to, any known firearms manufacturer or model; should be painted with markings indicating clearly to the naked eye at distance that it is not a real firearm; clear plastic components or obvious differences from any real firearm are a plus.  In other words, if a layperson can walk up to the thing, point at it and say "That's not a real gun" then you're good to go.  Also, and this is obvious, some BB and Airsoft guns sold in the US and abroad have a muzzle velocity in excess of 500 feet/second.  This automatically classifies them as a firearm under Canadian law unless exempted under the Firearms Act.  Thus, check the muzzle velocity of any Airsoft/pellet gun you wish to purchase and import.

IIRC, there are a few retailers that sell Airsoft guns within Canada, enabling you to avoid the import requirements altogether as they've already been OK'ed.

I doubt you'd get an airsoft with 500 ft/s. Most I've seen is 300.

nah, pushing 500 is easy. Even with a springer, not a gas gun. My current sniper is 450 fps, and thats with .25 g bbs, and its a springer. With .12 g bbs the gun shoots well over 500.
thats my two cents.

I'm looking to get into paintball, same way as WS, with a party sort-of thing. And since I'm a pretty crack shot with most firearms, my friends will hopefully be black and blue. ;7

I play p-ball a lot too, but i dont find it that expenisve, Try www.actionvillage.com for paint and other gear.  They are known for having the lowest prices.  They sell cases of 2000 Chronic (best paint ever, breaks every time and is mad accurate) for around $50.  As for the gun, I'd recommend a relatively cheap but sick gun, the Smartparts Ion, I swear by mine, shoots as fast and accurately, if not more so, than guns my teammates paid over $800 for, while I paid a total (including a LOT aftermartket parts) of about $600, but now that they've been out for a while they are around $200 or less.

Just out of curiosity, where you from?  I play in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, so I can reccomend a few fields from these areas if you're close.  If you're in ottawa i mite play u someday

Firearm skill doesn't translate into paintball skill.  I know.  I can pick off a pop can dead center with iron sights (scopes are for wimps! :P) on a .22 from 75 meters;  with your average paintball gun I'm lucky if I can pick off a 5' 11" 250lb human male at 20 meters.

Paintballs are large, spherical projectiles.  They do not follow a predictable flight path beyond about 15 meters (or 50 or so feet).  Doesn't matter how good your aim is =)

In short, make sure you spend a great deal of time behind cover and ambush any players that come stumbling by =)

I'm not nearly that good, (I agree with the scopes comment), but I never knew about the paintball aim thing.

I usually tap off 3 adjusting after the first. Hopefully i hit with the third. If not it's too late and i'm being zeroed so i relocate. I got more scrapes from sliding over razor sharp rocks in frozen mud than pb impacts.

Amen to that.  I rolled into a patch of thistles.  It was unpleasant.

Wow that was fast!!!
Well where I am, we have three pb fields to play on and one sux, one sux moar and one is good buy expansive. However the one that sux just sux because they give you guns that fire at like 180fps. I'm sure If I could get enough people to buy their own guns then it may become a viable option (however unlikely that is). Airsoft guns actually ARE illegal because they fall under replica firearms and that makes them a prohibited item. There were actually grandfathered after 1998 but no-one pays any attention to that. Getting an airsoft gun past 300fps is easy but past 500 fps and enough joules of muzzle energy and it's classified as a firearm. I know there are retailers within Canada but so few people are willing to stick their neck out selling prohibited goods that prices are somewhere around $500 for an un-upgraded LPAEG. I'm not aware of any airsoft guns that don't look like actual guns except for wal-mart clearsoft guns (which suck) but if someone knows more about this than me then go ahead and tell me!

Skiing is something I've never thought of and never really liked but that's only because I've ever done cross-country skiing. It doesn't really solve my problem of something to do over summer but I think I may give it a shot sometime in the fututre since everyone likes it so much. Oh and I can't go hunting because my dad doesn't let me go hunting (or FISHING!!! I've never been fishing!) even though he hates animals. Combining scuba diving and something else sounds fun though. New sport! EXTREME UNDERWATER KNIFE FIGHTING!!! I've treid fencing though. Didn't care for it much. Getting dressed up in what feels like a giant diapersuit and running backwards and forwards poking each other with bendy pieces of wire didn't fee quite as exhilirating as I expected. Swordfighting is kickass and all but fencing hardly qualifies as "fighting". Or for the word "sword" for that matter...

And playing chess.......yeah.......not a chess person. I'd rather watch two people play chess than actually play it myself. It's interesting once you have a removed perspective and can see both people's strategies unfold but once I'm seated next to a board I lose all perceptive powers (inlcuding the ability to dodge soccer balls). Maybe I'll combine CHESS with something dangerous. Like a new version of chess. Where instead of pieces you have several people who walk around chalk squares drawn on the ground and fight to unconsciousness when you try to capture something.

Stereotype much?

Downhill skiing is completely different, way exhilirating! And if you live in BC, the hills can stay open year-round.

Oh, here's one that I've been developing on a theory level for some time. Drag yourself to downtown, go berserk, start beating up all the people around you and see how long you can last before the other people/police/SWAT/whatever can overwhelm you.

I'm not sure about the 'sports' part, but at least 'combat' will be emphasised.

Well that, but as a polite man I would at least try to avoid killing. And no guns. Baseball bat maybe, but no firearms. It would mostly be a test of stamina and the ability to hold off an increasing number of opponents. And the most exciting part would be to find out what sentence you'll get after you are apprehended.

Here's a sport for you:  Korean-style swordfighting, aka Gumdo.  It's similar to the techniques of the Samurai, plus you can kick. :D
