...yup.
Just ordered a new PC, with fairly similar specs to the last set I posted. I just played FreeSpace at 1680x1050 with 16X AA and 16X ANI with the 3.6.10 beta media VPs. All I can say is bravo.
And Half-Life 2 Ep 2 looks gorgeous in the same.
God I'm glad I finally got a new PC. Goodbye 9500 Pro, hello 8800 GTS!
And Vista, if properly configured, really isn't all that bad.

Careful, don't forget the gnome!

Screw the gnome. go look for freemans Roughnecks. Much better than the starship troopers fps.

That gnome made me weep.

16x AA? Talk about ugly blobs. :ick:
-
Why ugly? AA makes stuff clearer.

:wtf:

To help clear it up...
With AA:

Without AA: (Notice the sharp edges)

I've only ever seen one game where AA was needed after raising the resolution. That game was so poorly coded that it required massive resources to run it at 1280 x 960 alone.
Try running Quake Wars: ET (not the game mentioned above) at 1600 x 1200 with AA cranked up to the max. It looks like a hazy drugged-out nightmare.
-
The whole point of AA is to smooth things without increasing resolution. Monitors have a limit you know...
-
Excellant.
Now try playing Crysis with full settings :pimp:

Break down the term. "anti-aliasing- it sounds like it's supposed to get rid of aliasing. What's aliasing? I don't have a clue ;D
-
Aliasing is what you get when you don't anti-alias :P

Like a subject. What's a ject? A reject? A project?

Don't think cole. You'll get a headache.

Hey, I have a computer hardware related issue: What is the absolute best graphics card I can get for around 50USD short of buying a refurb/open-box/ebay?
I ask because my new motherboard will have an integrated geforce 7100, and I'm quite sure that that won't do me much good. I'm not trying to go crazy with cost or anything yet because I don't have a job yet, but I do want to get something decent that'll last me a couple years until I do have a job.
-
How about this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814141065)?

There isn't really anything worth buying for $50. You could get an 8800GS for something like $90 last I checked, which is the cheapest card that performs reasonably well in games.
If you're strapped for cash, I'm putting a 7800GT and X1900XTX on ebay soon, so I could offer you one of those. But the 8800GS is quite a bit faster than either one.

On a partially related issue, is it possible to add a graphics card to a laptop ? If so, any good ones I can get for around the same price?
-
Only if your laptop supports cards, and only if the cards are compatible with it (not to mention the huge amount of heat and power you'll need to power the card).

Normally no. Although NVIDIA did license a graphics cards interface for laptops that allowed end-users to change card, but the interface only supported NVIDIA cards AFAIK. I haven't seen any laptops actually using this interface. I don't know if modern NVIDIA cards support the interface or if even NVIDIA dropped the ball on it.
In other words, in laptops you're pretty much stuck with what you buy. Changing RAM and hard drive are usually the only ones end-user can replace. Even CPU's are often soldered on the motherboard, as are video card chips.

Yes, and the 8800 GTS 512 MB, though considerably more pricey currently gives the biggest bang for your buck

AGP or PCI-E? PCI-E (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102064) | more expensive PCI-E (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102700) (less after $20 mail-in rebate) | Cheap AGP (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102081) | more expensive AGP (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102073)
