Hello! First post =) Really impressive to see FS2 has such an active community (never knew). It is, after all, the greatest game of all time :)
I was reading around to set up the SCP and I have a few Qs. Would appreciate any help.
I wanna play the original campaign with the cool new graphics that are meant to come with SCP (is that true?). I spent a few hours just then trying to get this going... In the Automated Installer, I already got the 'bare bones' Freespace Open 3.6.9. But I wanted to know... what is MediaVPs? It says "plus some graphical updates"... So is THIS what makes the game look nice, or the former? (Open 3.6.9)
Also, how big is the MediaVPs download size? My internet is about to get shaped, so I can't download it now if it's the 3GB or whatever.
And one last question, these are the requirements: (from here: http://scp.indiegames.us/bnr_installer.php (http://scp.indiegames.us/bnr_installer.php))
# AMD Athlon XP/64/X2, Intel P4/Core 2 Duo, or similar
# Windows 98/2000/XP/Vista, Mac OS X 10.4+, or a recent Linux distro
# GeForce 5xxx or Radeon 9xxx or other OpenGL-compatible video card.
# An OpenAL-compatible sound card
# 1 GB RAM, 2 GB recommended.
# 3 GB or more free hard disk drive space, depending on what is installed.
Do I really need such high requirements... I know they're not high by today's standards but my PC sucks and these are way higher than what the retail FS2 needed.
Thanks for any help!  :D ;)

I wanna play the original campaign with the cool new graphics that are meant to come with SCP (is that true?).
This may occasionally be a bit confusing for new people but in a nuthshell:
- The MediaVPs are the graphical updates (new models, new textures, new effects and so on)
- the FSO game engine is a totally pimped-out version of the original FS2 game engine and is needed to get anything out of the MediaVPs.
Even shorter: you'll need both to get better graphics.
Also, how big is the MediaVPs download size? My internet is about to get shaped, so I can't download it now if it's the 3GB or whatever.
Actually the size of the full download is drastically smaller now that we Turey is no longer providing retail FS2 with the Installer. The MediaVPs (3.6.8 Zeta is provided by the Installer) are roughly half a gig, depending on whether you also want the AdvancedEffects or not.
And one last question, these are the requirements: (from here: http://scp.indiegames.us/bnr_installer.php (http://scp.indiegames.us/bnr_installer.php))
*snip*
Do I really need such high requirements... I know they're not high by today's standards but my PC sucks and these are way higher than what the retail FS2 needed.
For utter and full pleasure? Yes. But the requirements are relative. Mama's computer (Athlon XP 2600, 512ram, Radeon 9600) can run FSO just fine, provided that the AdvancedEffects are not in use.
-
If you are using any of the MediaVP's then yes you will need a system similar to those specified above. This is because there are so many graphical overhauls in the MediaVP files including higher resolution textures, better effects, much more highly detailed ships (I'm estimating a 1/4th of all of the ships in FreeSpace 2 have received high poly upgrades to date), and higher quality sound and music. So you can use the FS2 Open EXE's which give you enhanced features but your system may not be able to handle all of the upgrades...
I would say from experience that those recommended system specifications are true to their word.
You can download the MediaVP files and just make sure you don't get the Adv Effects package (which are the most demanding) and see what happens.
-
Brother thanks for explaining it so well :)
I'm getting a new PC next week, nothing more worthy than playing an upgraded FS2!!!!!!!
edit: ic, thanks IceFire =)

Welcome to FS Universe, you know... once you get started, there's no turning back... muaja.. muajajaja :nervous:

xaxaxaxaxaxaxaxa!!
Also play FSPort.

Do my eyes deceive me? Nobody has beamed you yet! Allow me.

If you are using any of the MediaVP's then yes you will need a system similar to those specified above.
I beg to differ a tiny bit on that point. I've been running the SCP on a system with 512 MB of RAM and a Radeon X300 video card for some time now, and at least with more recent releases, I experience reasonably decent performance running the whole slate of MediaVPs...even AdvEffects. While I probably technically shouldn't be bothering with the latter, as it's the main factor in the slowdowns I do experience, the rest of the slate is able to run on a system far less powerful than what is advertised. If nothing else, it's a testament to the amount of optimization the coders have been able to achieve.
Bottom line? Don't sell your system short right off the bat. Try throwing the MediaVPs in there and see what sort of performance you get. You can always remove any big offenders and/or disable certain features as needed. :)

Damit retsof beamed you first.
-
Beam discussion isn't relevant to this thread. If there already is a beam, live with it.

Well, I know that I am a toooooootal fool, but I need help, too.
I downloaded FSO and that OpenAL thingy...now what?
I am perfectly unable to launch the game with it, nor to make any of the downloaded campaigns work...HELP, I am a complete donkey!!!
P.S.: Where is the ported FS1 campaign?
-
P.S.: Where is the ported FS1 campaign?
:welcomegreen:
For me it was the fsport file. Just extract the files in it into your Freespace folder and it should work (of course you'll have to select them in the campaign selection window when you get the game to work. :))
-
Never put any mods in your Freespace2 folder. FSPort should be in the fsport folder under your Freespace2 folder.

Uberthanks :)
Trying it out :)
-
Still in trouble... sigh.
1) Has FS2 1.20
2) Downloaded OpenAL for Windows and installed it
3) Used the installer
- still no goddamn launcher!!!! -
There is only a file named FS2_Open-3.6.9.dmg (yes, a dmg file)
If I reinstall, nothing happens... nor if I update...
What is the problem?
-
Dunno. Maybe server issues. I suspect dmg files are either Mac or Linux stuff so just leave them alone. There's a link to the latest Launcher in my signature, as well as to the nightly builds board where you can download the latest build.
-
Oh... :)
Still not over... there is NO fs2_open.exe!!!
-
Build == fs2_open.exe
the nightly builds board (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/board,173.0.html) where you can download the latest build.
-
I opened the lates build for Windows, and a new tab appeared with this: http://kepfeltoltes.hu/view/081214/zomg_www.kepfeltoltes.hu_.jpg

Your browser appears to try to open the .7z file. Right-click on the link and select "Save target as..." or something like that.
-
Well, it saved a 1KB thingy in .md5 format... :eek2:
-
(http://omglol.kerrolisaa.com/1/11052.jpg)
Congratulations. You are now a proud owner of the md5 checksum for that particular build. Hope you have fun with it.
1) Right-click this (http://swc.fs2downloads.com/builds/WIN/fso-WIN-20081214_r4996.7z). Select "Save target as..." or something like that.
2) Download to the location of your choice.
3) Use a .7z-capable archive program (like 7-Zip) to extract the .7z file.
pi) Place the .exe files to your \freespace2\ folder.
4) Select the fs2_open 3.6.10 .exe that ends with "-r" with the Launcher.
5) Click Apply.
6) Click Run.
7) Have fun.

Phew... trying to put it in use... at least it launched :D
...but it crashed and the ships are screwed... time to check the graphic details I guess...
EDIT: no crashes anymore (EDIT EDIT: There are crashes if I try to check any of the modded ships in the Tech Room), the campaigns are working fine, but the ships are having those "chewing gum" effects and giant lines hurling over the screen. Do I need to change resolution or what?
If this is not understandable (thanks to my idiot description), I'll get a screenshot.
Thanks for your continuous help!

I hope that you are talking about that... it makes no sense to me.
Anyway, Merry Christmas for everyone!

Is it just me or is that OpenGL version ancient? :eek2:
-
Well.. the OpenGL is as good as it just can.. its the 'graphics card' that is the problem ( S3.. )
-
You weren't kidding when you said you had an "old" computer, Lucika. :blah:
-
Quite. That
graphics card thing is the culprit. I'm surprised you can even get the damn thing to run in a tolerable manner. Perhaps you should try not using the MediaVPs. That might help. A bit. And regardless of whether or not you're going to do that, invest into new hardware. Now.
On the bright side, I think you're the first person this month who has had problems but hasn't had wrong vp files in wrong places.
-
I learnt it in a 500$ (or sg like that) lesson that the large MB number isn't enough.
Dear Santa...
Give me a new comp!
(by the way, FS2 is working perfectly fine... and I can't deselect the VPs...
-
(by the way, FS2 is working perfectly fine... and I can't deselect the VPs...
Yes you can.
For FSPort: move the mod.ini file in \freespace2\fsport\ somewhere else (completely out of the whole \freespace2\ directory).
For FS2: select No MOD from the Launcher's MOD tab.
-
On the bright side, I think you're the first person this month who has had problems but hasn't had wrong vp files in wrong places.
Something is not in the right place though, even if it is not a VP:
Someone passed an extension to bm_load for file 'st.pcx'
WARNING => Ship class GTF Aurora not located in Ship_info[] in player file
Wokka! Error opening file (bp.fc2)!
Error parsing 'bp.fc2'
Error code = 5.
Looks like a Blue Planet campaign file is floating around in a \data\ directory somewhere.
And the S3 should work just fine, but you MAY have to use -no_glsl. And you _might_ have to pass on Advanced. Having a texture limit of 2048*2048 and 8 texture units is a bit depressing.
On another note, didn't the log used to show video memory and number of GPU's?
-

:wtf: Hmm. Indeed. Lucika: Check all your \data\ folders to see if they have anything extra. Basically the only things you should have are the pilot files in \freespace2\data\players. Everything else is extra and potentially dangerous.
-
1) I meant that the retail FS2 is working perfectly fine...
2) mod.ini is that configuration settings thingy or all the VPs?
3) all data folders? in the freespace2/data/players folder, there is are these things:
- images (empty folder)
- multi (empty folder)
- single (if I1m right, than there are only the profile files)
- squads (empty folder)
-hud_1.hcf and _2, _3 respectively
-
2) mod.ini is that configuration settings thingy or all the VPs?
mod.ini is a funny little setting file that allows, among other things, the usage of numerous mod folders simultaneously. Take the \fsport\ folder, for example. As such, if you only select the \fsport\ folder as a mod, you can play FSPort. But, if there is a proper mod.ini file in \fsport\, the game engine will also use the \mediavps\ folder, and you can play FSPort with enhanced graphics.
The point was that if you're playing FSPort, you should move the mod.ini away from \fsport\ to see if that would solve those graphical issues you're having. And if you're just playing the FS2 campaign, select No MOD from the Launcher.
3) all data folders? in the freespace2/data/players folder, there is are these things:
- images (empty folder)
- multi (empty folder)
- single (if I1m right, than there are only the profile files)
- squads (empty folder)
-hud_1.hcf and _2, _3 respectively
All \data\ folders. Mainly just check if there are \data\tables or \data\missions folders that have something inside them.

Hello all! I'm a new to this community but I'm a big fan of this game. I have played it over and over the years but never got to any community. I've bought this game on GOG yesterday and was trying to install the FSO and improve graphics with no luck. After 4 hours of searching and trying to install FSO and MVP I came to confusion. The more I read the more I get confused - it's just too much of information for a noob.
Could anyone please help me to set up game with cool new graphics and new missions and also get onto online gaming?
And to explane me step by step what should be downloaded and installed because all I found on the forum was a lot of links to several threads which made me to go in confusion and I don't understand a thing now - what I have to download and even more how to install it...
My computer is a Laptop:
ASUS X53K:
Motherboard F3KA
Processor: AMD Athlon x2 TK57, 1.9 Ghz (dual core)
RAM: 4 Gb
HDD: 250 Gb
Video: ATI Radeon HD 2600, 512 Mb
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium
-
Ok here is the installation guide for the upgrades. You need to have the original freespace installed first.
Step 1: Download this: http://www.freespacemods.net/files/MVP3610/3.6.10-Total.zip
OR the same thing split into it's individual components
http://www.freespacemods.net/files/MVP3610/MV_Core.zip
http://www.freespacemods.net/files/MVP3610/MV_Music.zip
http://www.freespacemods.net/files/MVP3610/MV_Assets.zip
http://www.freespacemods.net/files/MVP3610/MV_Effects.zip
http://www.freespacemods.net/files/MVP3610/MV_Advanced.zip
Step 2: Download this: http://swc.fs2downloads.com/builds/WIN/fs2_open_3_6_10.zip
(EDIT: and this http://freespacemods.net/files/MVP3610/3610_Patch.zip , place contents in mediavp folder)
Step 3: Download this: http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/Launcher55e.zip
Step 4: Put the files that were in the 3.6.10-Total (or the other split up downloads if you chose that option) download in a folder called mediavps (make the folder yourself. NOTE: This is an old guide I made a while ago, just updated. So the mediavps may already come in a folder called mediavps. The important thing is for the files ending with.vp and any other ones that came with them to be in a single folder called mediavps, that has no other folders inside it). Put the mediavps folder in
C:\Games\FreeSpace2
Step 5: Put the contents of the other two downloads in C:\Games\FreeSpace2
Step 6: Open the Launcher.exe file you just put in your FreeSpace 2 folder
Step 7: Click the browse button at the top, then find the file called "fs2_open_3_6_10.exe" (its one of the files you put in the FreeSpace 2 folder in step 5, remove quotes). Click that file then click open.
Step 8: Go to the MOD tab in the launcher.
Step 9: Click the "Select Mod" button
Step 10: Select the mediavps folder (don't open it, just select it), then press ok.
Step 11: Go to the features tab in the launcher.
Step 12: You should notice a drop down field called "List type", which has headings in it. For each heading, make sure these boxes are ticked:
Graphics: Enable Spectacular, Enable Glowmaps, Enable Environmental maps, Enable mipmapping, Disable Motion Debris, Apply Lighting to Missiles, Enable normal maps, Enable 3D shockwaves. (any boxes that are ticked which I didnt list here, untick them)
HUD: Tick everything.
Gameplay: Use models for ship selection, Enable 3D warp, Enable flash upon warp.
Any headings I didnt mention there you just ignore.
Step 13: Add this into the custom flags field:
-ambient_factor 35 -no_emissive_light -spec_exp 16.7 -spec_point .6 -spec_static .9 -spec_tube 1 -ogl_spec 80
Step 14: Click apply.
Step 15: Go to the video tab in the launcher.
If you have a very good computer, use these settings:
Graphics: OpenGL (always, no matter the class of computer)
Resolution: As high as you can get without slow down or distortion.
Color Depth: 32 bit (always)
General Settings: High
Step 16: Click Apply, then Run.
EDIT: This is an updated guide.
-
Thanks mate! It was a really clear explanation and it works now! Thanks for the help! I apreciate it! :)

Did my installation manual really suck that much? :(
I am always open to suggestions on how to improve the installation walkthrough.

Well, it's a bit too confusing, if you talk about this http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,47640.0.html. The OpenAL link made me to think for atleast half an hour what do I really need to download, cause when I got there I found lots of download links to several installations. Turey's FSO Installer brought me to confusion as well... Ok I downloaded OpenInstaller but it just got stuck on updating files, cause there was no response from the server - it either stopped on 90% or 66%, tried that several times. And I got confused even more when I got to the next line where is said about Nightley builds board. I started to think what is what and searched for the information on the forums. And when I got to MediaVPs line I understood that it's a graphic improvement but then I thought: "what the hell is Nightly and Turey then???" It might be comprehensible for those who are more or less familiar with this community and mods but as for the noobs it's a blank page. Grimper wrote really simple step by step installation walkthrough and this is what I was actually looking for over 4 hours on the forums. I think you should make one thread like this for noobs so they can start step by step installing all the mods. And once more thanks to Grimper. All the graphics in the game are cool now. :)
-
No problem. And I can't believe he hasn't been beamed yet...
:welcomered:
Anywayz, Lobo maybe you should use my guide in a stickied topic somewhere. You would need to change the build link I gave so it links to the nightly builds board, and if the launcher or Vps are updated in the future they would also need to be changed.
-
Objections noted. I am soon departing to purchase excessive quantities of cheap booze. Once I return, I will edit the sticky so that even a person who has never even seen a computer before can succesfully install FS2 and FSO.
-
What sticky where?
I see a guide by Kalfireth in your sig, but I can't find any guide you made..
-
All \data\ folders. Mainly just check if there are \data\tables or \data\missions folders that have something inside them.
Well, most of the folders are empty, but in the missions folder there are some files named as Backup.001 to .009, respectively.
Is that normal? I didn't see anything else.

That is a sticky. It was an old installation instructions thread originally written by Kalfireth. I updated it a while ago, as evidenced by the "Last edit:..." part at the end.

Those are backup files created by FRED. Unless you've been FREDding some missions yourself, you don't need them.

Where can that extra blue planet be, then? Should I check the mod's data folders too?

Ok I have a few nitpicks about the new guide:
1. Whats with step 5.5?
2. With step 8, I would advise using step 11 of my guide. Its easier to understand.
3. With step 9, you should tell them to make a "Mods" folder first, which they can then put their mods in with their own separate folders.
Making a Mods folder saves them cluttering up their main FreeSpace 2 directory too much.
-
If i've made a mistake anywhere someone please tell me about it.
Well, I don't know if this has a connection to that, I applied everythig in the way you hav wrote and when I tried to launch the campaign, I received this:

If the game didn't crash when you got that error you must be using the debug build for some reason. Make sure you have
fs2_open_3_6_10r-20081225_r5020.exe selected in the launcher, not fs2_open_3_6_10d-20081225_r5020.exe.
^ ^
See the difference between the 2 files? The one with the d- is the debug build, use that when you want to post errors here. When you use the debug build, it should make a file called fs2_open.log in C:\Games\FreeSpace2\data.
-
1. Whats with step 5.5?
Some people have had issues with the GOG version's cutscenes and/or like the .ogg versions because of the reduced disk space consumption.
2. With step 8, I would advise using step 11 of my guide. Its easier to understand.
I want people to use their brains when installing FSO. And we are mainly talking about opinions in this case.
3. With step 9, you should tell them to make a "Mods" folder first, which they can then put their mods in with their own separate folders.
Making a Mods folder saves them cluttering up their main FreeSpace 2 directory too much.[/color][/i]
No. The general procedure is to have each mod in its own subfolder inside \freespace2\. That's the way it is described in kara's FAQ and that's the way it has always been.
-
Kara doesn't have very good file management then...
-
Still a matter of opinion. It is good and it works as long as the user bothers to think about stuff instead of just trying to get along by simply clicking "Next".
-

True, I messed it up... it was the debugger.
Any help on the mysterious extra blue planet files in hiding?
Or about the graphical issues?
Have a Happy New Year!

Wrong. You are referring to the mp-710 files, which are patches to the 3.6.8 MediaVPs that he has. Not having them would be a problem.
Also, I think there are a few unwelcome guests in your root FS2 directory. I'm not sure if they might cause additional problems, though...[/mobius]
Nothing unwelcome there. And most importantly, no unwanted .vp files in \freespace2\.

By unwelcome guest, do you mean the screenXXX files or the .md5 file?
Oh and Lucika, you can delete the 3.6.9.dmg file. In fact, any file ending with .dmg can be deleted in you pick up any more in the future.
.dmg files are associated with Mac or Linux right?
EDIT: It's also kinda ironic that with whatever language he is using, the VPs look they have VP Fail written under them.

VP fail ;7 ;7 ;7
In fact, it is "fájl, with the meaning of "file" (hungarian).
Any tips about those "unwanted guests?"

Correct.

Either do what Grimper suggested or do nothing. Only extra .vp files would affect gameplay and since there are none, there is no specific need to delete any of the "unwanted" files, apart from doing a little aesthetic cleaning on the folder.

Wrong. You are referring to the mp-710 files, which are patches to the 3.6.8 MediaVPs that he has. Not having them would be a problem.
Oh, right...I thought they were old packages in conflict...

1) So, what should I erase other than the .dmg files?
2) Does FSO require better graphical card than the retail version? Because retal works absolutely fine for me, so I don't understand the problem.

1) Perchance those "screen" files.
2) Naturally. And as we have already established, S3 products generally suck arse quite thoroughly. Installing the latest drivers might help, but there are no guarantees.
