Quite like my Ideas for Weapon Names thread, only that it's for ships now, regardless of which race. Here are some guidelines that you (don't) have to follow:
1. When listing a ship name, either add the prefix, or state the race, such as "SC Urobach" or "Thebes - Vasudan".
2. In the case of canon factions, try to use names from the appropriate mythology (Terran=Greek, Vasudan=Egyptian and Shivan=Demonic).
3. If 2. is not possible, try something related (e.g. GTD Rangifer or SC Blattodea).
4. You can say it. ;)
Let me start off with:
- SD Stolas
- SD Beelzebub
- GVD Khasekhemwy
- GVI Giza
- UED Guoming
- UEFg Zhiyou
- ACD Kephala
-
Terran=Greek
Shivan=Demonic
They're incomplete, the naming convention for Terran and Shivan names goes well beyond that.
-
GTD Aristoteles and GTD Xenofanes. I'm using those two names for my novel ;)
The main heroes are on the Aristoteles and their "rivals" are on the Xenofanes.

Ship names (e.g. GTD Aquitaine, GVD Psamtik, the lot).
- UED Huangrong
- UEFg Suntzu
- SC Andhaka
- SCv Mary
-
GTD George W Bush... or just GTD Dubbya. It can be armed with Nuke-u-lar weapons!

Earth based campaigns could have ships with names based on states, famous people etc. Just think about what names military ships have these days.

Oh right I forgot to mention something. When I said famous people and places, I meant only british and american famous people and places. That is what most modern day ships are named after. Gandhi, Berlin and Tokyo just dont fit. It may sound racist, but I dont name our current day warships, so meh.

That is not in FS1, that was in a mission added by the FSPort team as a substitute for the endgame cutscene before they were able to get cutscenes working.

You are forgetting that most warships YOU see are british or americans. Dutch warships have dutch names, Spanish ships spanish ones, Japanese ships japenese ones etc.. Earth ships have... earth names, so it makes a lot of sense that there is some GTC Whilhelmina in there too.

Oh right...
Well if it works that way then the ship names we should be seeing will come from the most dominant country on Earth (it stand to reason the most dominant country would have the largest navy). The way its going now, it looks like either China or India will be that dominant country.
So...Chinese ship names anyone...? :ick:
Although I'm thinking most people here will prefer British and American names, even if that won't (possibly) be realistic in the future.
-
Chinese names are used by the United Earth Federation (UEF) in Blue Planet. You can see my two examples a few posts above this one. ;)
What is known (by me) at the moment is that the UEF have the UEFg Karuna and the UED Solaris for large ships. If they have more warship classes, I either forgot about them or do not know them.

I still think that as GTA officers come from all around the world, we will see names from all around the world... But yeah, names from the dominating navy will dominate.

TSS = Terran Support Ship? (maybe more of a logistics and support ship like in BP, as support ships don't usually have names)
TD = Terran Destroyer
TSD = Terran Super Destroyer
As for the FSA ones...Free Systems Alliance?
And also esarai's personal text is making me doubt the first one is a logistics ship...
Terran Super Ship maybe?
-
The Icanus of INFR1 had the prefix TSJ, which stood for "Terran Super Juggernaut".

-
Can you give us some hints as to the size of the ships maybe?
Those are some good guesses, and inspirational ones, I might add, but the middle s stands for a word that has nothing to do with the ships function. I gave it this name just because I was fed up with the cliched-ness of Juggernaut, Superdestroyer, Colossus, etc...
Oh wow edit:
Totally misread the quoted post. TSS is 7km, TSD and TD are normal destroyer sized.
-
So TSS and TSD are more along the lines of a unique designation? Like the GTVA Colossus?
And am I right in assuming the first word is "Terran"?
-

For TSS, sort of. TSD is a standard definition for a ship class, and the first word is terran.

Yeah I know, but what are people going to think of first when they see a space ship named Enterprise?
Fun fact; it's implied NX-1 is named after the space shuttle, which was named after the NCC-1701, which makes it named after its replacement. The mind ****ing boggles.
-
Uh what are you talking about? :wtf:
-
The Space Shuttle Enterprise was so-named because of a petition (?) by Star Trek fans. Ironically (in my opinion) it's original name was apparently going to be 'Constitution', which was the class of NCC-1701, and so it would have had a Trekkie (used as an adjective, I'm not talking about Star Trek fans :nervous:) name anyway.
-
I still don't get this...Whats NX-1 and NCC-1701??
-
NCC-1701 is the number of the original (Kirk's) Enterprise. NX-1 is the number of the Enterprise in the Star Trek: Enterprise series.
-
Yeah I know, but what are people going to think of first when they see a space ship named Enterprise?

You talk as if the word Vista was used for the first time by Microsoft. :doubt:
It's a reference to (eye)sight which fits perfectly the naming convention for AWACS vessels.
-
It was a joke, Mobius.
-
I know, but I now tend to take jokes in a serious way and reply accordingly.
:p
-
It's strange that Terran AWACS names are taken from 1) Japanese names; or 2) high intelligence quotient.
-

:p
That's the whole problem, jokes aren't meant to be taken seriously.
It's strange that Terran AWACS names are taken from 1) Japanese names; or 2) high intelligence quotient.
I always thought they had something to do with sight or observation. Like the Lucidity and Panopticon. The only other named Charybdis was the Hamako.
-

Snail is right. Hamako itself may be another reference to sight but I don't know that name because my knowledge of Japanese culture is limited.
Other appropriate names I used/noticed are Lens and Oculus(I've already mentioned Vista).
-
AFAIK Hamako doesn't even mean or have reference to anything.
-
Well, I think it's a Japanese name...like the Yo****omo.
And what does An Luchan mean?

And what does An Luchan mean?
I've been trying to find that one out for a while, but to no success.
-
I thought Hamako was skirt, or part of a uniform/armor....
Anyway, Charybdis was also the name of the black market murder on TOS BSG...
(fun trivia fact)... :D
H.O.D.: TY for posting that link, it was exactly what I was about to goolge for (naming conventions).
However, in the space age it will obviously need some revisions. At least it is a good starting point for my fanfic musings...
-
Anyway, Charybdis was also the name of the black market murder on TOS BSG...
(fun trivia fact)... :D
Charybdis and Scylla were supposed to be located a few kms from the place where I live and there's a town called "Scilla" near that place. This is an even more interesting trivia fact. :P
-
Not so much a trivia fact as a Mobius fact.
-
And what does An Luchan mean?
I believe it's Vietnamese, and probably a place.
-
I thought Hamako was skirt, or part of a uniform/armor....
I think you're thinking of Hakama, which is like a skirt, but it is not a skirt. It's full length, lots of folds, usually blue or black, and is worn by samurai when they're training to kick ass with a katana.
Hamako I don't think means anything. Closest thing I got in mah dictionary was "Beach Arc," whatever that means.

Unable to determine whether you know about it or not, I shall, just in case, point out that Gojira is the correct form of Godzilla.
Why not. Sounds menacing in its own way. Though perhaps I'd rather see it on a Shivan destroyer.
