Title: Landram MkI
Post by: Angelus on April 11, 2009, 01:30:49 pm
Here's my first model i'm going to release ( once my mission is complete ).

It's a Landram from the BSG universe.
It's not 100% perfect, but it will do for now.  :D

I'm about to start UV-ing and texturing it, what i've never have done before, so i'm thankfull for any tips and tricks, that are not mentioned in the walkthrough on Karajorma site.

awaiting feedback... :)

Looks good :) As for Texturing, make sure you do a good UV Map. If you do, then you will save yourself lots of trouble making the textures. There is a tutorial stickied in this very forum. Read that to get some ideas. Good luck! :)

Hey, it's a sandcrawler!
Uhmmm not quite, if anything it looks like one of those things they use for getting around in arctic environments, and those also have two sets of treads.

I don't care, it still looks like a sandcrawler. :p

Thx for the comments guys!

Actually, there are no errors in the mesh. The mesh is a error... :P
I use Truespace 3.2 and 3DSmax 9.
Btw, thx for your UV tutorial, i bookmarked it and Scooby's tut too!

Thx for the pics, i used a screencap from the episode "Scar" and what little memory was left from the TOS movie.

Not this one, but the V2 for Diaspora will have a cockpit, so you can cruise on the Asteroid. :D

Hey, it's a sandcrawler!

Hm, maybe i should offer it to the Star Wars TC team... :D

In TOS they only use it briefly twice, both times at night or Snowy and then only show crappy views of it...
Sorry I couldn't find anything more useful.

IDK they used it in the new series, I must have missed that ep. Cool!

It appeared in "Scar" first, I believe, crawling around the mining ship.

Yeah, they're only ever seen as CGI models in brief establishing shots in various Galactica episodes. Often on Galactica's hangar deck.

Your pics are usefull, the more reference pics for the basic shape i have the better.
For v2 i'm aiming for the following look, i found that on Deviantart, the Landram looks like the mean future version of a Humvee. :D

I'll use that pic for the details, not sure if the RIS Landrams are armed, tough:

Actually those two renders are from a model I made based on IIRC a physical airfix kit released years ago.

Yeah they do help, thx!
There is no pic that shows a Landram from behind, so i'm thankful for every inspiration.

A little update:

Instead of finishing v1, i started new from scratch ( with the Landram scene above in mind ), this is the result so far. The cabine is almost done, only the rear part and the top.
Next thing: the bottom and the cockpit.

While that yellow part maybe needs some work, or just a bad angle, it's still pretty funny

The texture on the flak cannon? Texture and model of the flak cannon are by Coxxon, i only added it just for fun.

EDIT:

Can someone point me to pics/ screencaps of the cockpit/ interior of the TOS Landram?
It's so damn hard to find any...

I marked on red areas where You have some shading problem.. It is connected with mesh topology or problems with normals or smoothing groups so chech it!

Here's a little update.
Reworked the entire thing, changed a few things here and there, and most important: i reduced the poly count
by half.
This allows me to make the interior more detailed.

Dam that looks good Angelus. Highly impressive update. Just make sure to give some detailing to the wheels inside the tracks.

Thx!

Before i start detailing the tracks and soem parts of the cabine, i need to model the interior.
Should the poly count allow more details i add them or rework the tracks again, otherwise i have to make it via texture.

Edit:

just a quick render, reminds me somehow on a mission from MW4, where you play in the early morning hours...makes me kinda sentimental... :D

Nice modeling... *wonders about the color/texture scheme, versus the original's*

Thx! :)

It's my first real attempt at modeling something other then Asteroids ( well the second, but the fighter from the TS 3.2 ship building tutorial doesn't count :D ).

The civil version texture will be almost the same like the TOS original, maybe a little "dirtier".
The military version...not sure yet.
Iirc, in the episode "act of contrition", the military vehicles have the green color pattern used in todays armies.
But i think i stay more or less to the original, only add some insignias ( for the Galactica, Pegasus, Theseus...).

Very nice model  :D

Please add some more details on wheels... BTW. Better way is to fix errors not remove them  :p

Thx, i'll see how many spare poly's are left to work on the tracks when i finish the interior. :)

Regarding the errors... :sigh:...they are still there, they only changed their location. :(

Maybe they are cause by program core not by You.. sometimes it happens.. BTW. model is very nice maybe You can add some textures and some real light ;D

It seems that it sometimes happens when i extrude from a beveled face.
Texturing starts as soon i'm finished with the interior.

Maybe i make a real "beauty render" when i finish texturing.

A little update:

I took a break from FREDding a mission from Miburo's campaign ( which still needs some additional FREDders ), and started again on the interior.
This is the basic layout, i think it is ok, but i want see what other people think about it, before i start adding detail.
I'm not satisfied with the seats, they look way to Star Trek-ish, so they will be changed.

Size comparison:

My version is larger then the TOS one.

The seat of the gunner ( military version )/ geologist ( civil variant ):
I think changing the "workspace" layout for the civil variant...

and from a different angle:

On the right: weapons for the crew and closer to the rear entrance i'll add boxes and other stuff

suggestions and comments welcome!

EDIT:

started adding detail, comments...suggestions?

The seats will be replaced, guns too.
Both of 'em are ugly and have way to much polys ( the poly count for the cockpit is insane atm, and it's not even finished :( ).

The pilot will be added IF i find a way to create it with a decent poly count.

Hmmmm, I would say aim for something more in line iwht the outside looks of the vehicle. Its more angular and squared of than smooth and circular (not really sure how else to put this) so it doesn't look like its part of the vehicle.
