Please let this be true.
First Mechwarrior, now this? C'mon Freespace 3! Let's go for the hat trick.
-
To quote General Battuta:
AND I
JIZZED
IN
MY PANTS
I think that sums it up quite well, if this comes to fruition.
-
Oooh. I've never played either of those classics, but I've heard enough gushing praise about them to be interested.
-
What the **** is wrong with some of the game developers these days?
Did some of them really decided "hey, lets do something really unusual, lets release actually a good game for a change, you know, something people gonna really like..."?
From the look of the MW5 trailer it seems it's going to be a awesome game, and now Lucasarts seems to revive on of THE best space sims ever, yay!
-
I seriously hope LA doesn't pull a TFU and make it X-Wing: Arena, only for PS3 and XBox 360.
-
Erm TFU is coming out for PC, and the PC release gets new content as well.
-
AND I'M
CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC
IN
MY PANTS
A worthy successor to TIE Fighter and X Wing would be shiny as far as i'm concerned, however, LA of late has left me a little pessimistic.

Wha? Really? I must have missed the memo.

Yeah, way to piledrive Wing Commander deeper into the grave it's already been in.

same,
except i'm not wearing pants....
....where is the LCD screen cleaner?

Happy days, if its turns out to be true. Still have the original discs for X-Wing and for TIE Fighter. Preferred the latter tho, X-Wing was bloody solid!
-
NONE OF YOU WANTS TO SEE THAT HAPPENING!!!
come on, what did LucasArts make right after 2000? Bad games, worse games, flawed games, a stupid policy, ...
Do you really think they would make another real Space Combat Simulator? You'd get a game CALLED X-Wing but that's about it.
Expect a wishy-washy arcade like shoot-em-up monster (including console versions).
Kinda like StarWars Starfighter and those things.
Activate your brain cells and I am sure you'll agree to that.
The real space sim genre is still dead, only we, the fans, are keeping it alive by building games ourselves.
-
I have to say hookw read the original linked story. . .
There's nothing really conclusive in what he says at the end. Is there ?

Source (http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/697997/LucasArts-Teasing-X-Wing-Tie-Fighter-Announcement.html)
As part of a follow-up interview with LucasArts president Darrell Rodriguez about plans for the months ahead, I asked Rodriguez for thoughts on a return of the company's lauded X-Wing and Tie Fighter flight sim series.
His answer?
"We don’t have any announcements now, but stay tuned," said Rodriguez. "We will soon….."
If any, Tie Fighter / X-Wing series has the potential to resurrect dead space sim genre.
Edit: More rumors. (http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/14925/1/)

Well ****, someone already posted a topic with stupid topic title. :p
Which was edited to say what this topic is actually about.
-
If it really is a XvT remake I predict it will push back FotG's release by at least a year as Chief will be playing it obsessively. Our models will still be nicer and more accurate though!
-
Okay, than hurry up and release it before the remake.
-

You know, starfighter wasn't that bad.
Sure, it lacked the depth of X-wing or Freespace, but at least the fighters weren't slow as ****.
I remember how excited I was when I first played X-wing alliance 'cause I got to relive the harrowing escape from the death star, but I got bored with it at the five minute mark when I was still a quarter of the ways through the escape.
X-wing was fun, but damn, those ships sure could use a speed boost.
-
<-- used an A-wing to destroy an entire fleet of VSD, ISD, and one SSD in Alliance.
Was fun though, I still have all the discs and most of them are in my rack in front of me.
-
please please please no dumbed down console bull****

You must have been cheating, since it takes something like five-hundred heavy warheads to destroy an SSD, and an A-wing only carries four.
Plus, their combined fighter compliment should have slaughtered you by then.
To everyone worried about "dumbed down console crap" I have to ask, exactly what do you expect to be dumbed down?
I could do with a simpler energy management system that doesn't require me to operate my engines at half-power to recharge my shields or lasers
-
I would be so happy with a next generation version of Xwing and TIE fighter. And the TIE fighter soundtrack should be orchestrated and enhanced!
I'm still playing these games with Dosbox and a nice soundfont :).
The only games I love deeply.
-

I probably was, but even so... you can run off and take the TIEs one on one easily.
Caps as long as you dive bomb and knock out the "shield generators" first, makes short work of them.
Long as you don't hit the mission triggers, they'll sit there indefinitely waiting to die.
You could edit the table files too I remember, fly as an SSD or whatever. Flying a Death Star crashed the game though.

please please please no dumbed down console bull****
I don't think it's terribly possible to dumb down X-Wing/TIE Fighter. They were pretty basic. A modern controller could do them easily

Come to think of it... I think I saw that someone managed to mod FSO to play on the Wii...

I loved X-W: Alliance. The AI was great and the battles really were big.

The AI was great and the battles really were big.
And so is my Johnson.
Now I don't like Alliance as I used to a long time ago. I prefer the working cockpit of the titles before Alliance to a nonfunctional 3D one.

I lost many hours to the original X-Wing & Tie Fighter games, great games, great stories. The difference is that they looked at Star Wars from a serious perspective, they thought about the strategies that would be used by the Rebels, they held in mind the if it was Republic vs Empire in a nose-nose fight, the Republic would lose, purely due to the level of resources the Imperials could call upon.
Nowadays, the games seem to have the same approach as the modern movies, which means they'll add a shedload of stuff that makes no sense whatsoever in the context of the original, and worry so much about making it pretty, they'll forget that a game is more than its graphics.
It's one of the very rare times in my life where I'll say the best thing they could do to it, is hand the original code over the the LucasArts equivalent of the SCP team, and say "Make it shiny, but don't make it ****".

Almost makes me think of the X-Wing Alliance Upgrade Project...

When you look at Star Wars from a serious perspective you get KOTOR2/Karen Traviss/Matthew Stover.
Which isn't a bad thing.

I'm pretty sure Traviss wasn't serious when she numbered her clones, among other things. :P Perhaps you meant Timothy Zahn.
-
Stover, though...damn. I love Stover.
-
If they take all of the gameplay elements from Rogue Squadron III, chuck them out the window, and make a game that is completely different. Then I'm sure that a new X-Wing/Tie Fighter could one day be modded into a passable game.

In all fairness though, Kotor didn't try to reference the movies in any real manner, just used the Universe as a basis, also Kotor was developed by Bioware, not LucasArts, they only distributed it,which probably helped.
I suppose LucasArts could go to Totally Games for the uprgades, but I'm not certain what the relationship is between the two companies these days.
-

Zahn? Nah. Good light entertainment, but that's about it (have you read his original IP stuff? Same deal there). Which, to be fair, is all anyone should expect from Star Wars.
I think we can all unite in our loathing of Kevin J Anderson, though. Right?
Stover, though...damn. I love Stover.
I'm going to drown in their smoking ****ing blood.

While this is just the rumours so far, I'll only be interested in any other Star Wars game if the main character doesnt have a lightsaber, dont include anything about Hoth and if LucasArts stop being lazy ***** and come up with a completely original soundtrack (its already past the point of just ignoring the music, I downright hate listening to those same musics over and over again).

This. This is why Tie Fighter was good, and all the more recent stuff is bad.

Except KOTOR which made Jedis "fun" again.
-
THEY STATED TODAY IT IS NOT THE X-WING FRANCHISE.
So check these desires right now and trust me it's so for the better.
EDIT: Told they would announce it on Monday. I am curious... ...my bets are on Jedi Knight.

" I felt a great disturbance in the force. As if a million fans cried in anguish and were silenced."

Damnation and hellfire.

Confund it.

Right when I thought I would have a chance to use my shiny new joystick...

And Jedi Knight because of Kyle Katarn.
-
Kyle isn't really a Jedi. He's actually just a commando with Force powers. That's why he doesn't suck.

In a way, I suppose this is good news for one reason, since my first thought when I heard this was 'Uh-oh.. That's doesn't sound good for FoTG...
-
Brace for hip-dark-edgy Kyle Katarn Jr. in Jedi Knight 4 only for Xbox 360 and PS3.
-
Do we know its a Star Wars Game? They couldn't possibly be looking at, my god, the other games they used to make.

You forgot to add "realistic" aka dull as hell. :doubt:

A Monkey Island remake's already confirmed, IIRC.
-

FoTG doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell to resurrect dead space sim genre, an official SW space sim by LA would. X-Wing and TIE Fighter practically started modern space sim genre.
-
Alas....how long will it takes for the gaming industry to come back to space sims? I mean, we know such things are cyclical. It's just a matter of time before Space Sims are in again.
-
How long? Depends on when someone has the balls to create a financially successful space sim. Until then I see publishers preferring to stick with games that have higher chance of income.
-
Unless Pop Culture conforms to Sci-Fi, Space Sims will never be "in" again.
-
Spacesims have a good chance on the consoles I think. Most of the modern pads come with a stick build in so no more excuse for "we don't develop them because people would have to buy a joystick" Beside that extra preriferals are in. Every game has it. Just can't wait till "Cockin' with Mom" has an "authentic cocking pod."
Anyway I agree with Zane, that pop culture has a heayv influance on what games could sell well. Just think about the Halo hipe. I mean I found the first game terrible when it came to the PC but still I was watching the news about the second and third title because everyone talked about it.
-

I was actually thinking more along the lines of 'If LucasArts ARE going to re-release them, how would they react to FoTG?', my concerns were more about the legal implications than the impact on the genre.
Edit: IIRC it wouldn't be the first time a resurrection of an old game has caused problems for related fan-made stuff.
-
Well I'm sorry to say but if I have to choose between the two, I'd choose LA any day assuming they deliver at least good product if not awesome. We have more to lose if they don't than if they shut down FotG.
-
I'm honestly surprised Lucasarts hasn't bit their head off.
-
I'm honestly surprised Lucasarts hasn't bit their head off.
From what I understand, Lucasfilm/LucasArts seems to be fairly okay with non-profit fan-created work set in the Star Wars universe. There's a whole community of people who have made Star Wars fan films and released them for free, and I know at least one or two of those have actually garnered the praise of the higher-ups in the company. With this news confirmation, I doubt LA is planning on releasing a PC-based "realistic" space sim anytime soon, so it's not like FotG would be cutting into any theoretical profits of theirs.
-
Exactly, which would be the one reason why a re-release of X-Wing could have had serious implications for FoTG if it had happened.
Personally, I hadn't stated a preference, simply a concern ;)
-
I'll still play FoTG....
And probably enjoy it more.
-
I for one have lost all faith in Lucas Arts. Although I thought Mercenaries was fairly amusing...
Whatever happened to games like "The Dig" or "Full Throttle"? "Sam and Max Hit the Road" was sheer genius!
-Thaeris
-
I actually just finished Dig last summer. Gawd that was creepy.

In truth, I only had the demo. Even so it was most enjoyable. Is it worth finding on Amazon?

I take it you haven't played any of the excellent new Sam & Max episodes by TellTale Games?

It is.
Come to think of it, that was the first game where I went "hey, that was an awesome soundtrack".
-
I bought the original X-Wing, but to a child of that time emm386 is a ***** to work with. I bought the re-released triple pack (circa 95/6 i think O_o) maybe a bit later. Can't find it though. which is a shame as i never finished tie-fighter.
EDIT- you're still talking about XWvTF right?
-
I've actually got an original, boxed Rebel Alliance in my collection :) Can't find my original X-Wing and T-F games though, I suspect they are long gone :(
Really need to get a joystick again, just seems a pity to spend out that money mostly for playing older games :(
-
I've got the X-Wing and Tie Fighter collector CDs with all the respective expansions. Also got XWA. I assume they could work on my current system with a little jury-rigging. Never bought XVT. I don't give a crap about multiplayer.
-
I had the X-Wing Collector's CD ROM for the Macintosh. Probably wouldn't work on OSX without some finageling, but there you go. Worked fine on OS9, though.
Seeing as I currently run a Windows machine, I can't really use the software, but I do still have it. Supposedly the graphics were better for X-Wing and TIE Fighter on the Mac (not XW vs. TF, that was Windows only), and given that they were DOS only (if I remember properly), that makes perfect sense. Always wanted TIE Fighter, never got it...
