Wouldn't it be fairly easy to modify the scripts so that:

1. They didn't affect URLs.
2. Posts that were "shot by pirates" or "held for ransom" would have some sort of javascript button/link that would reveal the original underlying posts.

That way, all the fun without breaking things. :)

1) Those word filters are all Goober's AFAIK
2) Not touching them with 10-foot pole as I dislike them in the first place
3) I'm not a coder, not even html/php beyond basic editing
4) Goober is/was asleep, not around to fix his filters
5) Only fun word filter is one that isn't used

Y'know, not to play devil's advocate, but some of us legitimately look forward to this happening every year.  I had a smile on my face for quite a bit of yesterday, anticipating seeing the forums decked out in goofy pirate speak for another year.  It's become a bit of a tradition here as far as I'm concerned.  I have always completely failed to understand why people get so up in arms about such a brief disruption of normal text.  I mean...it's a forum dedicated to a 10-year-old game.  We're not trying to solve world hunger or cure cancer here.  Is it really too much to ask to let some of us have our fun for a mere 24 hours per  year?

Because it's not about talking like a pirate. If it was really that way, there would be more done. Pirate avatars maybe. Pirate theme for the forum. Pirate threads and such.

This forum is not wacky or goofy in any way. This is one of the strictest forums I've ever seen. That's not a bad thing, it's just how it is. And then on one day of the year (2 if it happens on April Fools) you're forced to participate or leave for the day. It's just another form of control.

To me (personal opinion time!) a fun "Talk like a pirate day" would be threads about pirates in GD, maybe a photo contest or something in arts. Playing the pirate themed campaigns or having mods and admins with pirate nicknames. As it stands now it's just a way for the higher ups to make everyone else do something whether they want to or not.

Maybe I'm the only one who sees it this way.

I can understand it being only in General Discussion, and left out of the rest of the boards, and I wasn't a fan of the Navy Seals thing, but, in general, this place is getting just a bit too anally retentive.

Apparently arguments about Politics and Religion are fine, posting **** youTube videos is fine, but a word filter is 'teh ultimate evil'.

Then we should do stuff that's fun. There are much more entertaining things to do then force everyone to go along and then laugh at the people who dislike it (which some people apparently enjoy doing)

Every other day I come here, this place is full of guys who have sticks up the asses of the sticks up their asses. Then on one day they change the word filter and it's fun! I mean sure you can't really do anything different than yesterday or so. Nothing changes but we have to talk in a way we like to pretend pirates talked (but didn't).

That is what leads me to think this is not pirate fun but "you have to do because we can make you".

Nobody, but nobody is making you post on here, you come here of your own choice, you post of your own choice.

As you say, this place is filling up with people with sticks up the arses of the sticks up their arses, I'll certainly agree with that, and this is just a prime example of how bad it's getting. 24 Hours of a word filter and you would have thought someone threw a grenade into a creche.

Seriously? Seriously?

"We're trying to have fun by forcing you to do something you don't want to do and you have the nerve to be upset!"

Everyone is avoiding the fact that it is completely annoying for people for a whole day.  Or, probably more accurately, those people just don't care about those people.  So we end up with an ultimatum. Play along or go away. And this is the one wacky day we all let our hair down?

It's not so much the rights or wrongs of the word filter that annoy me, it's people's reaction to it, I'm never, in my life, seen such a bunch of small minded, whining children outside of a primary school.

Might I put a different spin on this?

You generate the revenue to pay server expenses et. al. via banner ads.  Banner ads pay on a per-click basis.  Fewer clicks means less money, and fewer users means fewer clicks.  Does it seem very wise to tell a significant portion of your user-base **** off for a day, because you insist on shoehorning a joke into the forums?

Besides, when the options are "Play along," or "GO AWAY!" the joke loses a lot of it's humor.  It's like a middle school clique.

:wtf: mate.

1) The normal word filter also breaks URLs, if the URL contains a censored word.  People know how to, and do, compensate for that.
2) If you don't like the look of a post, all you have to do is refresh the page and it'll be filtered differently.  The pirate filter isn't permanent; all the posts go back to normal when it's turned off.  (Assuming you haven't modified the post in the meantime.)

BRB...

Really? I've left for years at a time.  It's entirely not the point. That's why no one has said "If you guys don't stop I'm gonna leave!", it would be stupid.

The point isn't the time frame. It's that it is forced, and it's annoying. It's forced gibberish for the sole purpose of making it hard to read.

It's not so much the rights or wrongs of the word filter that annoy me, it's people's reaction to it, I'm never, in my life, seen such a bunch of small minded, whining children outside of a primary school.

Because people don't want to do it. This is what boggles my mind. If people want to talk like a pirate today (which oddly enough is barely half over for me yet the filter has been turned off for hours) let them talk like a pirate. Those that don't, won't. But that's too easy, so let's go through a whole process that annoys people or makes them go away, that's much more fun and inclusive.

I now understand exactly why Aldo doesn't bother with this place.

Yes I'm sure Aldo stopped coming because I don't like being forced to talk in gibberish for a day. People didn't embrace forced "fun" in an enthusiastic enough way. We're such bastards.

Incidentally, upon looking at the code, the pirate filter already contains a mechanism for not filtering text between HTML tags.  So in that respect it's more sophisticated than the censor filter. ;)  Which makes sense, as I don't recall ever seeing a link corrupted by the pirate filter.  (If one exists somewhere, please bring it to my attention so I can fix it.)

This is the first time I've actually seen the pirate filter in action. Now I see even less what the fuss is about.

If you can't handle the forums being difficult to read for one day then perhaps you should find something new to do with your time.

I will hereby change my opinion. My primary objection to this was that it messed with stuff in the Support board. Now it doesn't anymore. Pirate day is good.

Unilaterally applying a word filter across the entire forum: Bad.

Makes Help and Support and the Private forums a ***** to read.

If people want to voluntarily take part of a social event, it should be up to them to do so.

And then deciding out of spite to kick it back on for yet another day? Leave the ego out of your professional powers.

Well, but since support and private boards have not been infiltrated by pirates, I'm cool with it.

Let us be blunt.

The activity in the forum decreases dramatically when the filter is in effect. The filter kills all activity in the FS section. The only major activity in GD is people upset with it. People don't like it. I don't know how much more direct an expression it can get.

So hahaha, funny. Funny enough to end a significant portion of activty for 24 hours.

Joke's over.

As I stated at th' start, I wasn't entirely happy about it creepin' into private boards, so I agree with The E, though he were bein' pretty much polite about his concerns in th' first place, so I didn't have a problem with wot scurvey dog.

Here's a story.

Every year, fer about 3 weeks here in th' UK, we have th' build up t' Guy Fawkes night, I didn't ask fer it, it wasn't me choice, an' I hate it, with a passion, one o' me auld cats lost half its tail t' a firework, an' me dog used t' hide under me desk when they were goin' off, by Blackbeard's sword.

Do ye know what I did, and dinna spare the whip! I dealt with it, I took what precautions I could, an' I got on with me life.
And swab the deck!  Fire the cannons!
Sometimes thin's happen in yer life wot ye are forced t' deal with even if ye are not happy with it, it's not oppression, it's th' opposite in fact, it's th' fact wot not everyone has t' live up t' yer own personal expectations o' what they should be doin', an' just on account o' ye don't enjoy it, wot doesn't mean nay-one else does either.

If people want t' make sensible, intelligent an' polite criticism o' th' whole thin' then wot's fine, but if people are goin' t' start screamin' oppression purely on account o' somethin' is happenin' wot they don't like then I have nay time whatsoever fer them.

Very little is accomplished by posting on the forums anyway. With teh exception of questions in general modding and the like.
If people want to be productive and wokr on their mods they can open up Fred or Blender where this word filter doesn't apply.

Exactly.  If you're really that offended by the presence of the filter yet still want to be "productive" (ha), go fire up some modding tool or other and ignore the boards for the time being.

If this 'ere 'ere place were truly about control, this 'ere 'ere thread would have been locked an' deleted, it hasn't.

Your attitude has been poor from th' start, ye seem t' think wot on account o' Admin are doin' somethin' wot ye don't like, wot ye must therefore complain about it and claim you are being co-erced.   The whole attitude towards th' pirate filter stinks.   Once again, I re-iterate, just on account o' ye don't like it, it doesn't mean th' whole forum has t' agree with ye.   Once again, I re-iterate, wot complainin' ye are bein' 'forced' t' comply with th' Pirate filter is in error, on account o' nay-one is forcin' ye t' post here, there are private forums wot are clear, there are other programs on yer computer wot are not subject t' th' pirate filter.
Walk the plank!  What're ye lookin' at?
As ye say, 'Not everyone is goin' t' like everythin' ye do', but then, not everyone complains about bein' 'forced' t' endure th' filter, if ye think I'm bein' condescendin', then wot's yer opinion, but ye'll not ye aren't bein' censored, if ye like, I can just lock th' thread an' show ye what I mean, with a chest full of booty.

Also, if th' filter changes stuff t' 'gibberish', how come ye could understand me post?

I think that what pisses me off is that there was no attempt at compromise whatsoever, when CP5670 suggests we remove it from the Modding/Supprt forums etc, I can understand where that is coming from, and even support it. But when there's no attempt at compromise whatsoever I get annoyed, people are welcome to state their opinion on the matter, and I'm fine with dealing with it, but when people start claiming it's 'control' or 'oppression' it just devolves into silliness.

On the one hand, I agree that it is strong to call it an issue of the admins exerting control over users, but on the other hand, I don't see an "opt out" button.

I appreciate having the means to opt out of the pirate filter.  At the same time, delightfully ironic that the pirates need to clean up their language.  ;)

Which makes sense, as I don't recall ever seeing a link corrupted by the pirate filter.  (If one exists somewhere, please bring it to my attention so I can fix it.)
At least Mibbit link in HLP IRC-channel (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=62431.0) was affected. "settings" became "settin's".

In the future, if you really want to use a filter of any sort, please only apply it to the general discussion. Even if the filter is screwed up, none of us will lose much in those 24 hours. Other boards thought, please just don't.
