I've always thought one of the funniest parts of it is watching people complain...
Oh, definitely.  God forbid those who don't like it spend 24 hours doing something else with their lives. :p
uh...

I removed this stupid word filter because it broke urls and replaced whole contents of posts with ransom message, some of which were important. If other admins would listen to me, we would never, ever use these stupid word filters anymore.

Can we just go back to the ones where all the productive forums get deleted again and the last backup was months ago and then it takes even longer to restore the backup. That was fun.

Have you heard of the quote function?
"You shot me in the bollocks, Tim"
"Like I said, no hard feelings"

Wouldn't it be fairly easy to modify the scripts so that:

1. They didn't affect URLs.
2. Posts that were "shot by pirates" or "held for ransom" would have some sort of javascript button/link that would reveal the original underlying posts.

That way, all the fun without breaking things. :)

What about leaving this pirate talk thing off our boards? It's getting damn boring.

It has occurred to y'all that Fury has to keep this place running, so if he claims the existence of a problem he's probably not full of it?

Tis a good thing that Cap'n Fury keelhauled the pirate filter. Separates the real pirates from the bilge rats. Arrr!

You know, if we want a type like a pirate day why don't we type like a pirate? You know, right on our own. Without a filter. :nervous:
There are three things that last forever: Abort, Retry, Fail - and the greatest of these is Fail.

TBH that would be weird, if you went back looking for something and an entire thread was filled with pirate-ness... At least the pirate filter doesn't have any long-term health risks. :P

1) Those word filters are all Goober's AFAIK
2) Not touching them with 10-foot pole as I dislike them in the first place
3) I'm not a coder, not even html/php beyond basic editing
4) Goober is/was asleep, not around to fix his filters
5) Only fun word filter is one that isn't used

Y'know, not to play devil's advocate, but some of us legitimately look forward to this happening every year.  I had a smile on my face for quite a bit of yesterday, anticipating seeing the forums decked out in goofy pirate speak for another year.  It's become a bit of a tradition here as far as I'm concerned.  I have always completely failed to understand why people get so up in arms about such a brief disruption of normal text.  I mean...it's a forum dedicated to a 10-year-old game.  We're not trying to solve world hunger or cure cancer here.  Is it really too much to ask to let some of us have our fun for a mere 24 hours per  year?
