Mostly, I might still come to see if anyone posted anything interesting but I won't post much anymore. I've been here since 2003, and there have been many changes to my life since that time, but one thing that has always been constant was HLP. It's been good, but recent policy changes have become far too restrictive and it amounts to blatant censorship. A word of warning, posting anything that isn't 100% politically correct, or something that a few thin skinned people don't like is now considered "trolling".
It isn't easy to let go, but I don't see a choice anymore, not after Goober's abuse of his admin power these past few days. 1984 has found a new home here. It won't be long before this thread is locked for questioning this new reality, so whatever you want to say make it fast. :p

Kosh is throwing an internet hissy fit, complete with overblown Orwellian accusations. You get used to that sort of thing.
I won't say I'm sorry to see you go, Kosh. You've grown increasingly confrontational and less well-grounded in your posting style over the last several months, so I'm not completely surprised Goob got fed up. He was perhaps out of line, perhaps not, but you've now justified him quite nicely with your Taka/Mobius/Trashmanonareallybadday-esque accusations of Orwellian behaviors and admin abusiveness without, once again, attempting to support or justify said accusations.
And that was the last thing I ever expected from you.

Based on what a certain quoted poster said combined with a certain admin I'm not sure if those discussions are welcome here anymore. I do enjoy them as well. Karajorma has convinced me to stick around, at least until this gets sorted out, so much to the chargin of certain others I won't leave quite yet.

If you looked around, you'd see that it was an isolated instance. You're also ascribing things to Goober not actually said. I could call you a liar, if you like? Misrepresenting the facts?
If the shoe fits, accept it's stuck in your mouth.

All of us have said many things that were not politically correct over the years and nothing happened, but something has changed.

Goober pretty much said it was a deliberate change in policy in the post where he monkeyed Kosh though. And he gave more of an explanation of the change in the PM he sent to Kosh explaining the monkeying. So Kosh actually has more data than a single data point.
I happen to completely disagree with the change and have basically said as much.
NGTM-1R, I'd watch out if I were you. You would have been monkeyed for things you've got away with in the past under this rule change. Kosh was simply the first victim, it could just as easily have been you.

It's not a change in policy. Here is what I specifically said:
Now, historically we've focused on the major offenders, and let the minor offenses slide. Recently there has been a discussion about improving the tone in General Discussion, so we are now targeting the minor offenses as well as the major ones.

I think he means that the policy has already been changed and so the drama should really be minimal.
Frankly I don't like that policy regardless. It seems slightly overbearing, and unlikely to effect any real, positive change, only more drama.
Goober, what both you and I see as the degradation of output on HLP hasn't been brought about because of a instances of name calling. People change, and so forum discussions do to. HLP stands to survive a bout of not so great discussion and production, but if the administration is seen to be too harsh, more people will leave, eventually leading to the complete breakup of the community.

It's not a change in policy because 1) we haven't updated the forum guidelines; 2) there wasn't any indication of how long "now" would last.
Basically what happened was the application of an existing policy, to wit: we monkey people for trolling. Only in this instance a) I dialed down the threshold for what constituted a trollish post; and b) didn't warn him first. (Keep in mind I've seen a lot of confrontational posts from Kosh in the past and haven't done anything until now.) Later on I acknowledged that even with a lowered threshold, a warning should have happened before a monkeying, so I unmonkeyed him.
Keep in mind the whole reason this came about was a discussion in this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?board=103.0) that appeared to show a consensus that the tone in General Discussion should be improved. Apparently either a) people don't want an improved tone as much as they thought they did; or b) this is not the best way to do it. :p

I don't get the point of doing only off-topic discussion on a topic-specific BBS but that's just me.

I came here because of Freespace and stayed because of "Hard Light" discussion (:D) it's not that rare, some people don't have something to say about Freespace all the time. :p

I think this is about ready for lock, seeing as the problem has now been resolved.
And remember, just claiming that 'Admin will lock it' is not protection against locking, I've seen this claim several times in the last couple of months, and the next time someone says something like this, I'm going to lock it regardless of content, after all, wouldn't want to dissapoint, would we? What with our Orwellian type oppression and all :p
