Voiceacting efforts for Ransom Arceihn's Transcend campaign are now under way. If you wish to submit samples of your voice talent, you can post them here or send them to either me or Ransom. Either way will suffice, so long as we receive it.
Ransom's refined the script to better suit the vocal talent that will be breathing new life into it, but the lines are the only part that's really changed. The plot still runs the same as the original. Major roles will be given individual descriptions below, while we'll have you audition for vocal templates in regards to minor roles. From your performance, I'll choose the role that I believe best suits you.
The list below is broken down by character, featuring a brief description of each one. Beneath each of these descriptions are a bulleted list. This list shows the specific lines for each audition. If you're auditioning and want to stand a better chance at being considered, have your samples cover all of the listed lines. Give all of your samples the following format to make sorting them out easier for us: charactername_username_linenumber.wav. (Ex. Generation_Dekker_Line2.wav)
The major roles are as follows...
Sunder Marcel - Male, 30's-40's. No accent, but this character is usually the quiet type, so try to keep his voice soft, but clear. Sunder Marcel is a local security officer who's been press-ganged into the ranks of 103rd Shadow Guardians, but he previously worked as a mercenary, and that side of him plays an increasing role in his decisions.
- "It's strange, isn't it? The way the human mind adapts to situations. Something absurd one minute is perfectly acceptable the next. You don't keep track of it, though. Your mind just quietly wraps itself around the offending issue and before you know it you don't even think about it any more... Like the first time you watch someone die."
- "The Varcent and Raven's going to guess where we're going. I don't know how long we'll be able to wait around for the Chondral if they show up."
- "Whenever we're here, I start seeing things. Ships moving in the nebula. But they're strange. And they move . . . impossibly."
- "Make for the node. We must reach Vega."
Daniel Korgan - Male, 30's-50's. American accent, no particular region required. Daniel Korgan is the wing leader of the 103rd and is the seasoned combat veteran of the squadron. He's very experienced and still knows how to lead and how to fight, but his age is starting to catch up with him.
- "It's time things were explained. My name is Daniel Korgan, and this wing of mine we call the Shadow Guardians. After the Great War, the 103rd was largely disbanded, yes -- all standard deployments were halted, and most newcomers were shifted to different outfits. We were an elite squadron, as you ought to know, Sunder. We flew the hard runs. Mixed with the GTI in its heyday, well before they went sour, and more than once brushed shoulders with the SOC after that. So they took us off the books. Gave us a choice: leave and be nobodies, stay and cease to exist. No guesses as to which I picked."
- "Smart decisions, Marcel. Not always the right ones. We'll settle with these guys later, but for now our survival's what's important."
- "Generation, the only thing we're running from is your obsession! We've no understanding of the things you've seen. Believe me, that's something we aim to change. This hunting of us serves nobody."
Mark Davies - Male, 20's-40's. Mark Davies is usually the archetypal pilot of the group, easy-going and often cocky, but also with a loose temper. The disappearances and anomalies soon spark fear and superstition within him.
- "Like I said, don't take it too personally. The guy you replaced, Joseph Chassil -- he was a good friend of hers. From before she joined the 103rd."
- "Just what are we going to spend it on, you idiot? We have a bloody corvette on our ass! We're wanted criminals!"
- "This is messed up. This is all -- Jesus Christ, what the hell is happening here? Phantom subspace signatures, disappearing cargo . . . not to mention whatever happened to Generation's ships."
Samantha Rikas - Female, 20's-40's. Samantha Rikas is bitter and moody, which often translates to brash decisions on her part. As the entire universe begins to tear at the seams, her cold attitude disappears and is replaced only by doubt and uncertainty.
- "I don't think so, Marcel. I think you're giving him too much credit. These guys are bold and complacent -- he'll think we've been paid off."
- "I don't know, all right? Maybe we were out for longer than it seemed. Maybe it tore up some ships worse than others. If you've got a better theory, I'm all ears."
- "You know, I never found out how Joseph died. Daniel never told me. And I didn't press him -- I guess I didn't really want to know. He just never checked back one day. He'd been undercover. We all assumed the worst. I thought Daniel's silence meant Jo had tried to leave. But now . . ."
Karl Sinclair - Male, 30's-50's. Karl Sinclair both highly intelligent and highly insufferable, with little patience for those who stand in the way of his profits. Even when he helps the 103rd by accompanying them into the nebula, his helpful assistance is likely motivated by how much he could earn from that venture.
- "For God's sake! It took me months to get my hands on those converters! What are you doing, pilots?"
- "You waste your time, Omicron. I've seen that look on many a face. It's the glint in the eye of a trader convinced of the profit in some hopeless venture -- in the customer who believes you to be swindling them even when you are not."
- "You need to look at it from his perspective. He’s been unjustly accused of something he doesn’t even understand. He needs someone to blame. That’s you, naturally. And now he’s in too deep. Either he catches you and justifies his actions, or his career is over. A mental event horizon. If you’re to be believed, this is all a misunderstanding. But it’s one that will destroy this man. Perhaps it already has."
The GTCv Generation - Male, 30's-50's. The Captain of the GTCv Generation is an honest and good man pulled into events beyond his control, and when many of his fellow craft disappear in an instant, he's driven into insanity. His sense of justice becomes twisted and the only thing he cares for afterwards is seeing Omicron wing receive justice, regardless of the consequences.
- "I knew men aboard the Raven. The crew of three cruisers, and how many pilots? Hundreds murdered. I will never understand your kind. This is senseless, and it stops here."
- "I. . . all ships, retreat! I'm aborting this mission. Evacuate the area immediately!"
- "To what? What are you going to do, Vasudan? Xi wing, target Omicron's engines! I need one of them alive!"
- "No. You don't understand what you're doing. This is not over, Omicron!I will find you again. Justice will be done."
The Silent Eye - Male, 30's-50's. The Silent Eye watches over what's left of the 103rd Shadow Guardians, but he increasingly views it as a liability rather than an asset. He's always wary of their decisions, speaks to them tersely, and treats them harshly when they get into trouble. When he decides that they need to be put down, his calmness is chilling.
- "It'll be done, then. But keep in mind this is all you get. My resources are not limitless, and I'll remind you you're in no position to be careless. Good day to you, Omicron."
- "I don't care who the Raven and Varcent were working for. The fact is as far as the public's aware they were patriots. Killing them does nothing but draw attention to yourselves and by doing so you've stirred up hell. I should turn you in. It would certainly save me a lot of trouble."
- "The Shadow Guardians are dead. A shame. Your journey ends here, pilots."
Saya Khoseh - Female, 20's-40's. The Transcendant's lone prophet, she speaks as if in a trance, poetic and enigmatic. As she leads her flock to the moment of absolution, her true emotions are noticeable, but she remains unwavering until the very end.
- "So you seek the Transcendant, then. The outsider."
- "He is . . . disconnected. This universe is a warm light he remembers but is unable to grasp. It is impossible to say how long he has searched for some weakness through which to return. What use is time to a being that exists outside it?"
- "This is the end. It is the end of all things -- and everything ends in Aldebaran. We make our final pilgrimage. You make it too, though you won't admit it."
As for the minor roles, the templates are listed below.
Terran Male
- "Pretty sure it's an empty threat. He paid for safe passage, and unless he has an aneurism from losing all that cargo I think we're in the clear."
- "You're welcome, Gamma. Any other time you feel compelled to delay our shipment we would be happy to oblige."
- "Mayday! Mayday! This is the Raven. We are under concentrated attack from pirate fighters! They've already destroyed the GTC Varcent!"
- "I'm a man who deals in chance, Omicron. I keep on the edge of the spotlight and that's how I stay unseen. The longer you tail me, the higher the odds are that I get caught, and I don't like having the odds against me."
- "My entire wing's vanished! Generation, what the hell is going on here?"
Terran Female
- "What on Earth are you doing? This vessel is unarmed!"
- "Command, we have confirmation on the node. Reports indicate a class B, phasing. Nothing larger than a vessel of cruiser size."
- "All craft, engage the Generation! He must be stopped!"
- ". . . Meet at these co-ordinates in Vega. There’ll be a gathering there at 2100. The last."
- "Generation, power down immediately and prepare to be boarded. This is your final warning. Ignore it and be destroyed."
Vasudan
- "Attention, Chondral. Our records indicate your escort is wanted for piracy charges."
- "We have arrived, Esyel. Moving to engage the renegades."
- "All hands evacuate! Power surge -- systems inoperative! Reactor containment --"
- "You stand by and allow Vasudan civilians to be murdered. You pull Sandre from the node. And despite all the forces we have brought to bear these pilots continue to evade our grasp."
- "Do you take me for a fool? The Parliament will survive this alliance, just as they have survived all else. Vasuda may be lost, but her spirit is strong!"

Ooh!
I want in on this................
Batutta is an immediate reference. But i'm going to whack a few samples out as well.....
-
Slight changes to the sample naming scheme have been posted. Since you've already sent in samples, I'll change the names for your lines myself, Dekker.
-
I'm incredibly eager for feedback, Ransom's on Aussie time I appreciate, but any feedback yet?
-
I'll need to send him the samples after I'm done with my community college class for the day, but I will say that your voice is very good and will likely find a niche somewhere in the cast. What other campaigns have you done voice work for, if I may ask?
-
Only one, and it's in my sig..
I'm the "Voice of the GTD Orestes" in Blue Planet.
although i was rejected for Silent Threat Reborn i'm not bitter:nervous:

I can't wait to hear you in that...but it seems that you've sent me MP3s instead of wavs, Dekker. I need wav files.
-
Any chance you could use Audacity to open and save as .wav? My fair usage is nearing it's limit and i've got a few work e-mails to send before the end of the month.

I'll do that myself if the MP3s themselves won't do, then.
-
I recommend .oggs, if possible. .wavs are monstrously huge, and since Transcend will never be retail compatible, there's no need to use them.
-
If you can find some role to suit my voice, I'll gladly borrow my voice for Transcend.

Oggs are nice, but according to Ransom, they're not really a good format to receive raw lines in. We'll convert the wavs into oggs during post-processing, but what we need right now are wavs.

I have no idea what your voice sounds like, Darkblade. That's why you need to audition for roles. Try multiple characters if you're not sure about where your voice will best fit. It'll make it easier for us to narrow your choices down.

Plus, you can always .zip/.rar./.7z up your raw .wav files for the transit.
I am interested in giving one or two of these a shot, but I might have to wait for a few days until I get the chance to record them.
-
Fair' nuff. I hope Ransom doesn't have a shaped connection!
-
My connection is non-Euclidian
-

-
If you use a torrent, does it count as multiply connected?
-
That might explain why I keep receiving packets that have not been sent yet
-
If I had any way at all to do this (or a good mic, but that's besides the point) I would volunteer in a heartbeat. :sigh:
-
My mic was four quid from play.com
I thought there'd be a bigger turnout for this? Are you recruiting externally as well?
-
Mine's an Xbox 360 mic that came free with the console, and I can't figure out how to get the damn thing working right. :P
I should probably look into how to get it working. My forensics teacher was surprised last year when I was able to do my prose with no accent :P(well, aside from a slight American, but that's what I get from growing up in America.)
-
I'd also love to play with VA at some point, though in the mean time, I have to ask this: When do you expect to have something done?
I only ask as I figured I'd work on re-doing the GTF Kelpie. I've got Taristin's authorization to do so... I just need to get a good start [...amongst the multitude of other projects I'd like to work on...].
-
I thought there'd be a bigger turnout for this? Are you recruiting externally as well?
There would be, but Ransom needs to shore up a few more details for the outsourcing. They'll need to know what Transcend IS, after all.
Still, we're getting a good turnout, both in terms of people who have submitted samples and those who are contemplating it, and it'll only get better when we start getting some professional talent on board.
-
Ransom's gotten the samples from Colonel Dekker and Rbxplayer. I'm still waiting for his review of them, but in the meantime, we could certainly use more than two voiceactors.
-
Two questions :
Are strong foreign accent welcome (French) ?
If yes (I doubt it, though) what do I need beside a micro ? Where is the FAQ for that stuff ?
-
Quite frankly, I think Capt. Marcel would best be played by a Frenchman... After all, "Sunder Marcel" does kind of scream "French accent" to me.
If all you've got is a built-in mic, I'd make this recommendation (which The E first made to me): Get Audacity. Audacity is a free audio editor which you can use to amplify a recording and fade out the noise of a low-quality mic. It also can export .ogg files...
You can get it here; If SourceForge isn't cooperating, you can download it from the external Google link on the site just as easily.
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
-
Strong foreign accents are very welcome.
-
What's the verdict? RBX and I have been sitting outside for ages waiting.
-
Amen Amen
-
Well, major parts won't be cast until auditioning is over. It isn't first-come first-served. Unless you were just looking for feedback?
-
It isn't first-come first-served.
Quite right, a little feedback would be nice ;)
-
Actually, do you have a script for the Silent Eye lingering about somewhere? I wouldn't mind trying my voice out at that...
-
Actually, do you have a script for the Silent Eye lingering about somewhere? I wouldn't mind trying my voice out at that...
You'll find it in the first post.
Colonel Dekker, your lines seem to have microphone pops. Could you try speaking to the side of your microphone the next time? Your current lines don't need to be redone for our consideration, but your lines will be clearer next time around.
Rbxplayer, you seem to be overacting a little, but right now, it's a tolerable amount. If you can make your lines sound more natural, that would be nice, but it's not required.
-
You can remove the pop pretty easily in Audacity. Dekker's lines in particular benefited from the 'noise removal' feature.
-
You've had success with that feature? I've used it in the past to remove the background hiss from my recordings, but it always winds up stripping out a significant of the warmth in my voice, to the point where the result is almost a bit mechanical-sounding. Maybe I just need to tone down the strength on it.
-
Y'all might be interested to read about one of the ST:R voice actresses' experience with pop (http://bal-ny.livejournal.com/2529.html) filters (http://bal-ny.livejournal.com/4155.html).
-
I've heard that trick referenced before, but I'm not about to ask my mom for a worn-out pair of stockings to construct my own. :p
-
They go for about $20 on Amazon if you don't want to make your own.
-
Alright folks, progress report time.
As of right now, we've reached a milestone! I've received the project's 5th audition! Sadly, this script has a total of 42 roles, only 8 of them being major ones. Since I'd prefer if everyone had their own role to ensure diversity throughout the cast and realism in the storytelling, we'll need many more people auditioning. I'm going to be making my own vocal auditions for Ransom's review soon, and I'm going through the entire male human/Vasudan sample list. If you don't want the stresses of a large role, I'd suggest you try for a template. But overall, we need more participation if we're going to get out of the auditioning and into the rehearsals.
Remember, the longer it takes to get the cast on board, the later you'll have to wait to play a voiceacted Transcend.
-
I strongly suggest going to external sites to hunt for roles. It worked wonders for ST:R and BP.
-
Damn it...I was going to throw in an audition for one or two of the main roles myself (though I could really do anything you guys needed and felt like I was good enough for), but I completely forgot about it this week. I'll see if I can get something in over the next few days.
-
I strongly suggest going to external sites to hunt for roles. It worked wonders for ST:R and BP.
Ransom told me the same, and I'm going to get it done soon. I've also yet to submit my own voice for consideration, so I'm going to do that as well.
-
For my own clarification, would you like some more samples or did what I submit suffice for audition purposes?
-
Okay, auditions sent. Hopefully something in there works for you guys. I wasn't sure exactly what you wanted for the Vasudan template, so I kind of went for the sort of almost-monotone that's used in the retail voice files.
-
At their present state, your lines will do fine, Dekker. When we know what we want you to do, we'll let you know what role you landed.
And as a blanket update, Mongoose's line AND my own have been sent to Ransom. Still waiting for his verdict on them, but even with that, we've still got a large cast list to fill. If we had a different person playing every minor role, we'd have forty-two voiceactors. And so far, I believe we only have a quarter of that.
-
UPDATE:
I've had null success trying to get response for the main and significant roles at Voice123. I've had little luck finding Battuta or Goober5000 on the IRC, so I've been unable to ask them how they were able to get such stunning feedback for their projects. If you two are reading this, could you give some tips on how to make the V123 projects the right way? Because I know that, if I did this right, I'd be getting at least a few results from the site.
In lieu of this situation, I've added the Voice Acting Club to the sites I've put out the call towards. That makes it a grand total of three sites: The HLP, the VAA, and the VAC. If I find out how to break open the potential of V123, I'll have four sites to turn to for voiceactors, and I probably can spend more time reviewing the talent themselves than finding more outlets to draw talent from.
Now, this last paragraph is important, so listen up. We've gotten about eight voiceactors so far to try for these roles, and I think it's about high time that me and Ransom made our final decisions on some of them. I'll try and get not only ideal roles for the voiceactors, but also some backup roles in case their intended role gets filled in by someone else. With forty-two separate roles (including all of the minors), I'm sure we'll find a way to fit everyone in somewhere.
-
Contact individual actors directly on Voice123.
Be extremely polite, present samples of the roles you have in mind for them, and if you tell them they are cast, be aware that you CANNOT trade them out for somebody else later.
-
I’m interested in trying out—particularly for the role of Saya Khoseh—but I have some outstanding Blue Planet obligations to fulfill first, so I’ll hold off on posting samples.

So V123's smart search option is a total lie? That's interesting. How many actors did you have to go through before you found the people you needed for the main roles? The prospect of going up to every one of them and asking them to do something for free doesn't sound like it'll go over well to people who get a cool hundred per minute for a business commercial.

Understood, Rian. I look forward to the time when you are able to post some audition lines.
-
As I've said before, look at the Silent Threat: Reborn voice credits. Those people were willing to work for free and will, presumably, continue to do so.
-
There may have been a few other differences:
1) The economy was much better in the first half of 2008. People may have been willing to work pro bono then while being less willing now.
2) ST:R had a website, a forum, and promotional stuff (images, plus a WIP trailer). You might want to consider supplying this for Transcend.
3) ST:R might have been better known than Transcend. I can't say for sure, but I can say that the original Silent Threat was fairly widely publicized.
On the other hand, Blue Planet also suffered from some of these but still managed to cast a few V123 people. So, maybe you should hunt around on the VAA forums for that list of voice producer tips.
-
I've sent in a demo for the Silent Eye part. I hope it suits those to whom I've sent it. ;)
-

Blue Planet has managed its success largely by being really, really nice. Our best actors have, in fact, been bringing their comparably talented friends to us, taking care of a large chunk of casting for us. V123 and Goob's recommendations have been wonderful.
-
Oh, right, that too. Don't underestimate the advantages you get from optimism, enthusiasm, and really good manners. :)
-
Quite so. In fact, I can thank Goob here for some wonderful tips on VA etiquette. One of which I was recently bothering sigtau about, probably to his bemusement.
-
After a long enough time, I believe it's time to show off the list of Received Auditions. The list is below. Those who me and Ransom have discussed are in yellow and those who we haven't discussed are blue. When we finally have enough voice talent to start assigning actors to various roles, we'll change the names to green and specify the taken roles. For now, every role is still entirely available.
Received Auditions
Adam Crow (VAA)
Brian Tubbs (VAC)
Colonel Dekker (HLP)
Darknezz (VAA?)
Mongoose (HLP)
Ryumaru (VAA)
Spazitan (Unknown)
Thaeris (HLP)
Those who don't see their name on the list, you may have discussed possibly sending lines in, but until I've received them, I can't put you on the list. I'm going to start scouting for professional talent after 2010 starts, so if you still want an unfettered chance at a role, you should attempt to send in your auditions before the start of February.
-
Might get back into the swing of this -- I won't definitely have free time for two weeks, but I'll try to get lines in asap.
-
Was my bid for the Silent Eye ever more thoroughly discussed? :nervous:
-
Sorry about the long time you guys have had to wait in your quest for feedback. I've tried to contact Ransom with a couple of emails, but I've not heard anything from him since. Ransom, if you could give me a status update and maybe a little feedback for these guys, that would be golden.
-
That's okay. There are plenty of voice acting projects for us to hone our skills.
I'm contributing to four at this point in time.
-
Are there still some VA roles open here? :)
I'm trying to get my feet wet, but to no avail :)
-

I'm trying to get my feet wet, but to no avail :)
Try for any of them. They're still quite open, so take your time and make some good auditions.
EDIT: Ransom has decided to run through the script once again and rewrite some of the lines. That means more time to send in your auditions, so if you were on the fence before, don't delay. The more people we have on board, the more variety and diversity we'll have among our cast, and maybe we'll be able to avoid casting the same people for multiple roles. If you have friends into voiceacting or know some professionals who could give it a try, spread the word. We're going to make this and we're going to make it right.
-
I'd love to have a part in this; only joined the site yesterday and started recording samples and playing with audacity this morning so may still take a little while to get them all satisfactory. I tried to take as few liberties as necessary with my lines so far, in order to make them flow a little better for my voice, but I plan on sending you some samples soon. :)
couple of brief questions:
-Would you mind if people who made voice clips didn't have an account on here? Some other people I know (i.e. Family) were interested in recording some samples.
-For the minor role of the vasudan, I assume you just want a person to translate what they would be saying, therefore speaking fairly impassively as they do in main campaigns?...unless you wanted me to have a go at creating some Vasudan samples. ;)

I look forward to hearing your samples. And they don't have to have an account here. All they need to do is email the samples. If they're based at a voiceacting site, it would be nice to let me know where they are so that they can be properly credited, but it's optional.
And you would be correct in your assumption about the Vasudan role. We'll be hearing the translated Vasudan speech, but that doesn't mean that personalizing your Vasudan is wrong. I'm all for individualized translations, so unless Ransom says otherwise, I don't have any problem with multiple people trying for Vasudan roles. Just make sure that your Vasudan doesn't sound too human and you're fine.
-
must... take... stabs...
-
Any response?
I sent the samples to your mail I found in your profile.
-
same, I patiently await feedback as well :D
-
must... take... stabs...
I think they prescribe medication for that.
-
I got your samples and will send them to Ransom as soon as I have time. Sorry about the lack of feedback, though. I've been holding off on providing that myself because I don't want to get your hopes up for any particular roles, especially since we're choosing by merit, not by timeliness. I'll try and get some sent to you guys after we've had more time to let the acting pool fill up.
In the meantime, I'll update the initial post with the received list for convenience.
-
I'm all for talent first.. Even if i have none, it'll make the end product that much more special :D
-
I'm all for talent first.. Even if i have none, it'll make the end product that much more special :D
We have forty-two roles in total, I believe, and that's counting every single minor player, so I'm pretty sure everyone will find their place in this...so long as nine of them are women.*
(* = Note that this is the ideal figure, but does not in any way limit the capacity of female voiceactors to inhabit roles previously defined as those belonging to male voiceactors. Your talent is what will get you your role, not whether you were born with an X or a Y chromosome.)

I'll give it a go. only will take a couple minutes of my time

I've officially thrown my hat into the ring. /Crosses fingers...

Another batch of auditions has reached Ransom, and I'd like to remind all of you who are still on the fence about sending in auditions that Ransom is going through another script revision. This will give you even more time to send in your auditions. Anyone who said that they'll give it a try without actually sending any lines in, you need to rectify that while you can. We won't focus on scoping out the professional talent elsewhere until this second revision is complete, so it gives you a chance to get on the cast list while the seasoned voiceactors are still few and far between. The only way that we'll be rejecting you for a chance at any role at this point in time is if we don't hear from you. When there are more professionals among the cast, you'll have more difficulty being a part of this, so I urge you to take advantage of this extra time and send in your lines at the earliest provocation.

Come on guys and girls. Be a part of the freespace universe history. Like Mackey in Derelict.
THIS IS YOUR CHANCE!
-
i'd like to help out, but i have about nil free time these days, and not a very good mic either.
-
I'll record on Monday hopefully
-
I was in Derelict... Does that me freespace history?
Anyway strange organization, actors mentioned and colored but not WHAT FOR..
So: I decided to audition under Karl Sinclair's Lines.

It's only strange because we've only listened to their auditions. Ransom doesn't want to make any definites about the roles right now and get stuck in a dodgy first-come, first-served system. So, as of right now, nobody has a role and everybody has an equal shot at the compendium of roles. And while Ransom is undergoing this script revision, we won't be actively searching for professional talent ourselves. As I've said before, it means that this is a good chance for everybody.
I'll take a listen to your lines when I get back home, but I also recommend that you try out for more than just one role. They're all open and everybody should be making a grab for them. The more voice actors we get before this script revision is complete, the quicker we'll be able to organize the professionals and the semipro talent and the sooner you'll see some actual progress in getting your voice in this timeless campaign.
And Desertfox, it's more than a couple minutes past Monday. Almost a couple weeks, actually. What's holding you up?
-
Actually, I just wait for the "Yes we want you, especially for X role (unless you get bumped)' type of response.
Reason: I got picked for a major role by the vocal person of a mod after auditioning and then I did the 80'sh some odd lines of the script he sent me for it. After sending them in I was cut entirely due to conflicting opinion of the Devs. Seems the Sound guy got overruled about using me at all.
So, if people want me great. But if I am not "suitable for this project", why bother recording more lines when I know myself from screening people, if I want them or not right away (for any nonspecific part)?
Let me know when R makes a decision in the future. It wastes less time for everyone that way.
:D

This is indicative of poor mod management. If you land the audition, you have the right to expect that your lines will be used.
If the developers change their mind or disagree, there should ideally be some concessions offered to the person who took the trouble to voice the lines.

I had the same mindset about it. The failure of proper communication led to you being given the short end of the stick. The sound guy made the decision to have you read all of those lines without the approval of his superiors? It's not your fault and it's not the superiors' fault. It's the sound guy's fault. I know better than to say "Oh, go ahead, you get the role. Here, read these fifty-or-so lines and I expect them in by Tuesday" because I don't have that authority. I may be directing the voiceacting, but Ransom's the one who has the final say when all is said and done, because he's the one who made the campaign in the first place. If you land a role, it's because he said so, not because I did. I would be overstepping my bounds and compromising the entire project if I just suddenly said "Hey, you! Wanna be the big hero?"
All of that aside, I was only requesting that you record a few audition lines from other roles so that we could have a broader sense of what we could do with your voice, that's all. I'm trying to give you the chance to find a role easier and one that's better-suited for you too, not making you read ten pages worth of quotes based on a hunch.
-
NP... That's what I was aiming for (in an overly verbose way). If you thought I was channeling myself towards on particular role, I wasn't (just whatever was open).
Just by scanning what others have posted here earlier, I myself have pegged people in my mind as perfect for X,Y, or Z roles I needed filled, even if they weren't trying for those parts specifically. That's how I picked up Rogue Angyl for Capt Kramer, before the RT project got hosed.) I can understand not wanting to delegate voice authority, heh, I wouldn't for my projects.
Also that's why I have links to everything (that I manged to save) that I have done. This should be ample material to see if R's got a use for me.
If not, like I said earlier no prob... I just appreciate the consideration of my audition.

The second script revision is finished! Now me and Ransom are going to step out from our bunker and start making choices. Within the next week, I'm going to contact all of the people who have sent in auditions and let them know to be ready for our verdict.
Sorry about the long delay, everyone. We'll more than make up for it.
-
:D
I'm still really hoping I'll get the part. It also gives me an excuse to go out and buy a mic.
-
Ladies and gentlemen, we've chosen our first voiceactor. Dellaciel has landed the part of Samantha Rikas!
This change will be shown by green text on both the voiceactor's place on the list and the role she's taken. However, I'm not going to cross out the audition lines for Samantha because they may just be able to help place the Terran female voices. I'm going to update this topic whenever someone has landed a main or significant role, and if anyone lands one of the multitude of minor roles, I'll send them a private message containing their role and their lines. If you want to share that you got a part from there, feel free.
We've hit a milestone, so you don't have to wonder if we're going to start picking roles for VAs anymore. Now the only question is when. If you want to find out more about the voiceacting progress as it happens, keep a close eye on this thread and you'll be the first to know.
Keep up the good work!
(Also, our auditions list is still below the magical 42 that I'd prefer, so if you've been wanting to wait until the last minute to try out, go ahead and send in your auditions. We'll try our best to accommodate you.)
-
When I'm able, I'd like to audition for Davies.
-
When I'm able, I'd like to audition for Davies.
When you're ready, send in your lines and I'll be happy to listen to them. Just remember that you're more likely to get a role if you don't limit yourself to one position.

Ach Nein!
Every time this gets a reply my heart skips a beat just in case I get chosen. . . :shaking:
-
Who are you trying to get, anyway? :nervous:
-
Not looking for anyone. I wouldn't mind the Generation but i'm putting my eggs in Ransoms basket of choice.
-
I did all the lines on the topic header except for all female and vasudan roles. It was pretty fun. If I get a part I will purchase a better mic. I've been meaning to get a good one anyways.

No means a professional voice actor.
Did my best to test out the parts.
Although I'll have to admit they got better the further down the list I got more into it i guess.
I guess a tip is to read some of the roles your not into first and save the ones you want to do last as your probably better at it in the end for us non-pros.

That's a good idea to pass along. Thanks for sharing that with us, and I'll take my ear to your samples soon.
Ransom and I will be going down our list of total auditions tomorrow and finding out which roles would be best for each person. I've got plenty of time to focus on this now that my spring semester of community college has ended, so expect faster progress.

My sister came over for the weekend so I got her to do all the Female lines. I also did the Vasudan lines so now between me and my sister we did all the lines! :doubt: :ha:

Hmm, and I thought I had sent my auditions to this a long time ago. Guess I should stop eating so much candy so I wouldn't get sugar highs.
Anyway, here are my auditions for Marcel, Sinclair and The Silent Eye: http://www.mediafire.com/?koqtywnuimf

Well, it has been a while...
...If I may ask without being a nuisance, has there been any progress in selecting further voice actors?
-
Alright, you guys deserve an explanation. The lack of progress has been mostly due to my real life taking a big chunk of my free time out, and I had to let a few things fall to the side. Helping to start a family business is a very difficult and time-consuming process that's more stressful than it really ought to be. But I'm not going to let this thing die just because I suddenly have my hands full. I was hoping that Ransom would keep it going in my stead, but it seems we've both been busy, so I've chalked my hands and decided to give it another go. And this time, I'm not going to wait around for the perfect voiceactors. I'm going to work with what I've got, regardless of whether this is your first or hundred and first voiceacting role. We're going to get started fast, we're going to work through it fast, and we're going to get it done fast. And we're going to get it done right.
Now, I need to know who here at the HLP is interested in joining up or coming back for another run. Let me AND Ransom know through PMs and we'll get started ASAP.

May I make a few suggestions?
You haven't updated page 1 post since last April
According to your post you have my audition lines but haven't bothered to Listen to them.
That means me (and 3 others) reposting is moot.
You won't get anything done right by doing it "fast".
To quote Goober: "That is indicative of poor mod management." ;)
You have a page full of actors that were willing to help, yet only ONE had actually (officially) gained a role?
I'd start by listening to the 4 people you missed for evaluation and then making decisions of the 18 total, formerly available people..
Make you're decisions from what you had available and Contact each one to say "I'd really like you for X role, are you still available?". If so they get that role, if not, you're recasting it and remove their name from the list immediately.
It's not cool to have people send stuff in and then get left twisting in the wind.
It makes them feel like you don't care, have not actually bothered to consider them at all, or have no mod management.
Casting lines should never be touted out in the beginning unless you're doing a project with universally known roles (ie everyone knows "Kirk" is in it for example).
Audition lines should be something like:
Pilot chatter -
Command personnel -
Political minion -
ect, you see utterly generic.
That way you don't have 50 people trying to get the same named role.
I was flattered when I heard someone like my line for character-X, but I bet everyone else who went out for it was kinda miffed when the Voice coordinator said that publicly when like 5-7 other people just got done auditioning for it on the same page.
If you do make a "cast list" public, then you need to keep it updated and when a role is taken, remove it from the list. There is no reason to say the name of the actor doing that role at this point.
You contact them privately and congratulate them, and confirm if they are indeed still interested in committing to that role.
When they reply affirmative, then you send them the script of all their lines (to be submitted to you as soon as possible).
Individual, specific roles should only be touted out if a voice actor had to drop from the project due to whatever reason.
By this point you should have the VA's hard at work recording their lines (for example, my usual turn around time is about a Week) and any roles they have been dropped are publicly recast due to expediency, "We are almost finished, but do to issues, we lost actors for these roles and need to recast": List the specific missing roles then...
[You also need to listen to new submitted work and send messages indicating revisions or tone/timing/pronunciation problems you need your VA to address on that work.]
You post on Page 1 is most unhelpful.
"2/08/10 - Current Received List added to initial topic. (Blue = received but not discussed. Yellow = received AND discussed. Green = landed a role. Red = dropped out of the cast list.)"
So from all the names listed, how many of those ("received and discussed") would you actually USE, and how many of them would you throw out? I think that would be the priority before you adhoc have people re-audition just for the sake of re-auditioning.
Especially if you never intended to use any of them in the first place!
That's just cruel and ethically wrong...
Someone sees a typical project VA request and then makes an audition line and posts it.
Project member much later posts: "We had an issue could everyone please repost?"
Hopeful VA reposts and eventually gets a email saying, "With all due respect, we don't feel the work is suitable for our mod at this time, best wishes,,,X."
You just strung a perspective VA along for possibly 2 years or more (just an example) and then made them repost an audition, when they were never going to be used by the project in the first place... Damn.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1.) Pick a member of your "team" and make them responsible for all VA work.
2.) Go through you archives for any existing auditions and listen to them and make decisions and contact those people...
3.) Re-evaluate your needed VA roles, X-Major, X-Minor amount, and indicate that you need that many slots still filled.
4.) Receive and listen to submitted auditions in a timely manner.
5.) Debate them, make cast decisions, and then contact those people!
IMHO that's how you best incorporate VA work into a mod.
And that's assuming your mod is even READY for VA work at that time.
It's not a good idea to try to cast for a mod that isn't even finished yet unless you need placeholder lines, and those the mod development team can provide themselves to replacement later...
The handling of VA's is probably the most public face of any mod effort and can make a big impression as to: (This is a serious minded production), versus, (This is just a thrown together thing).
Sorry if this sounds a little harsh or may influence my own "chances", but I felt those things needed to be said in the best interest of the community.
:)

Thank you for the lecture, Getter, but the first thing on my mind when I decided to get back to doing this was not to just drop everyone off of the list, ask them to redo all of their lines, and throw caution to the wind. It was also not the first thing on my mind to be accused that I'm doing things that I know very well not to and to be berated for it.
I know that you've dealt with terrible people in the voiceacting community before, people who can't do their jobs right and or ask too much of you when they don't even have a say in the matter, but you're really coming across as overbearing when you try and teach me how to do my own job. I can handle this, I promise you. I'm not telling ANYONE to redo their lines. In fact, anyone who's sent in their lines to us already are still in our library of auditions. Your lines are completely safe. We just wanted to contact you and see if you were still interested having your audition lines be considered for some roles in this project. You're psyching yourself out into believing that I'm just going to suddenly tell everyone "welp, redo your lines," and reacting to something that never actually happened in this case. I don't like to sound crass with this reply, but you're belittling me and Ransom by jumping to conclusions and assuming that we've forgotten how to do this over the past month or so. You can say it was in the best interests of the community if you like. All I was saying was that I'm not going to sit around and wait two months just to pick one voiceactor again, like it seemed we were doing before. We were going to get the ball rolling on everything we had left hanging when we stopped, and once we were back in, we would stick with it until the end.
And to be honest, you're barking up the wrong tree when you come to complain to me for half of this stuff. I've been doing everything per what Ransom's told me and have maintained constant contact with him through all of the important details. If you have a problem with the way he does things, bring it to him, but you need to get over your fear of doing eighty-something lines for someone. I'm not going to hand you a role unless I'm certain that you can deliver on it, and you need to go through actual auditions for them, not hand me references from campaigns and voice bits you did before and expect me to just go ahead and count it. If you're not even willing to commit to reading lines for an audition, then I can't help you, but I'm not going to let your mistrustful attitude interrupt the flow of this VA effort just when it's back to picking up steam again.
I know what message you're trying to get across, but next time, maybe you should get all of the facts before you try and teach us a lesson we already know. Now read this post once more and give it another shot.
-
All right, knock it off.
Getter, thanks for taking the time to post. I agree with most of your advice, although I question your decision to post it publicly. Foxtrot has not handled this the way I might have handled it, but he asked for the responsibility of managing this project and I have given it to him. If he had not approached me it would not be happening at all.
I'd like to apologise to everyone for our poor communication. I tried to maintain a fairly hands-off approach to this project, but ultimately I don't think that was fair to Foxtrot. He has worked hard and I have not reciprocated.
We are not expecting a second set of auditions. All previous auditions will be considered. If we are interested in assigning an actor to a role they will be contacted directly. The intention of Foxtrot's earlier post is to confirm interest in the project and simplify things on our end. Ignoring it will not exclude anyone from consideration.
-
On top of me working slowly on fortune hunters, I have a few xmas functions to organise too. But this project is something i'd definitely like to aid. To that end i'd like to add I can pull off a few different dialects, predominantly Dodgy english akin to psycho from crysis/jason statham, blue planet voice, posh, Dodgy russian, and willing to try any others if it fills a gap.
-
Not a problem, I always try to be as informative as possible no matter what aspect of modding I comment on.
Also I apologize if my post was taken in a manner I had not intended!
You can see now why I never considered a career in teaching others.
:)
I won't be making any more comments to the Development Team in so not to disrupt any momentum or creative energies any miscommunication can produce.
