Canon FS:
Quote from: C. Snipes
What, do I look Shivan to you?

Non-canon:
Quote from: Mackie
I've got a wad of duct tape I'd like to shove up your ass...

And the speech in that one ST:R mission.

I'm no native English speaker, I've never understood the fun part of "even followed the directions". Does it means he had a user guide explaining how to set up a bomb somewhere ?

Apparently so, which I think is what most people find amusing about it. :p

Oh, and as far as applicability goes, "Avoid the beam and you won't get hit, pilot!"

I don't remember it word for word, but the part in "As Lightning Fall" where Snipes says  "now here's a lesson for you: SOC didn't rescue me because they liked me..."

I thought that pretty well summed up the SOC experience.

It's probably a cultural thing.  In America, the stereotypical "hotshot pilot" or "awesome spy" will never need to read the instructions.  (Witness James Bond when he tosses the instruction manual in front of the car with automatic turrets, and the car shreds it.)  Sometimes movies will play with this trope, and will show the device malfunctioning or backfiring the first time it's used, requiring the hero to read the instructions before it will work.

In Snipes's case, this trope was played with still further.  The devices malfunctioned even though he followed the instructions. :)

There's some interesting outtakes/unused lines in "Into the Lion's Den", here's one nobody seems to know about:

Quote from: Snipes (outtake)
Evade, evade, evade! Get outta there, get outta there!

And some more unused lines, "Endgame" is the mission these are from:

Quote from: GTC Fortune (unused)
Hard to imagine it would all end like this...
Quote from: GTCv Monitor (unused)
Save the Iceni for me, I'll take Bosch down myself.
Quote from: Some Wingman (unused)
So where's the Iceni, command? Let's end this NOW!

Note, these are all from stu_fs2.vp, but don't have sexps/messages in the actual missions.

Also, Derelict is lame, FYI.

I've always enjoyed the many times where command tells you

"Ignore that last message!"

But, one I just recently came across

"If command wanted your opinion they'll promote you to Admiral. Now shut up and focus"
First mission in the Nebulae

Then I played the campaign on Insane mode and got sick of hearing that dialog over and over. Now I hate it.

in regards to the snipes directions quote, i think its funny because he followed the directions, the detonators should have worked. however, they didnt. irony 4tw!

and another good one that leaves a somewhat warm feeling in my belly:

Quote
I know why the Ancient ones were destroyed and I know what they knew. I know that if not for the Shivans, they would have perished long before. Without the Shivans, someone would have discovered the Ancients in their infancy, and eliminated them, just surely as they eliminated countless billions of others.

I believe it is only the destroyers who are killed. The Shivans are the great destroyers but they are also the great preservers. That is why when we moved into space there was no one powerful enough to kill us. Long had we been the destroyer. Our turn had nearly come.

In the Vasudan war, we learned how to adapt, we learned how to study our enemy, we learned how to overcome, we learned how to survive. And so we did.

All the jump points from Earth are gone. But the Shivans can rebuild them. I'm told we can expect them again, but not in my lifetime. Such is liberation

Bosch: You would be well advised to question the motives of your leaders, pilots.

Just about every line by Snipes and "Mackie" of Derelict fame.

Command: Avoid the beam and you wont get hit.

Ahh, a fav quote thread, theres one of those that pops up every once in a while.

While many quote FS2 and non canon, I will point out to the FS1 intro, although its not just one line :)

Comm:      Sir, I don’t have anyone else on scope, you’re home free, pilot.  It’s going to be all right.
Pilot:      No it isn’t!  You don’t understand, you weren’t there!

That one gives me shivers every time i hear it.

Whoever voiced "Lt Ash" is the best damn voice actor I have ever heard, period.

Quote from: Command
There will be no negotiations, Bosch.

Recently I had gotten to thinking that this was intended as a bit of a double-entendre; that Command was going to let him escape, but that the fighters were going to attack the base/Iceni enough to make them think Command was actually trying.

But then I played the mission again and noticed the order the lines are spoken doesn't quite work that way. If they were said in a slightly different order, though, that might make sense.

Hey! I now know where the "I even followed the directions" came from!

Strange... I never got prompted to do that series of SOC mission before...

Are there certain requirements you need to do in order to be able to do them?

You just need to finish mission 10, blowing up the Repulse. You should get asked after that.

An outtake is a recorded line that went wrong. It is definitely not used anywhere in the game, but apparently two outtakes were left in the .vps for teh lulz.

Dang, you're still an ensign!  You must've gotten busted.

We aren't sure how you've done, but you are hereby promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral.  We think you cheated.

You must've really cheated to get this rank.  Do you want to sit behind a desk all day?  This is what Vice Admirals do.

You really have got to stop cheating.  This could become a natural thing for you, and that would be bad.  Go on Admiral Cheater, I think you have to perform some inspection or ceremony or something.

"though not nearly as potent as the LEGENDARY COLOSSUS..." quoted from Procyon Insurgency briefing.

This simply glorifies the Colossus' name, and gives a sense of nostalgia considering that there are probably only a few fan-made campaigns which use the Colly  :)

THE LEGENDARY COLOSSUS is arguably the best title for the Colly.

Favorite non JAD quote is from derelict

"And the defecation is about to hit the ventilation."

the actual quote (played the mission couple days back)

"Alpha 2(Mackie): Looks like the defecation's about to hit the ventilation"

To remain in canon however, one quote I love:

Admiral Koth, NTD Repulse:

"Your cynisism appals me Colossus.  I have ten thousand officers and crew willing to die for Neo Terra.  The Tyranny of your regime is finished!  Admiral Koth out!"

Or one that made me almost fall out of my chair because of how much it surprised me...

Lt. Comm. Snipes:  DIVE! DIVE! DIVE! HIT YOUR BURNERS PILOT!

followed by death...

Honestly, is there ANYONE who didn't just stand there the first time and become a stain on that Sath's hull?

Me. I've never been rammed by Sathanas 03 before. That's the only non-cheat claim I can make from the day I started playing FS2 to today.

I'm not the only one who can make this claim, though. See this old thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=55023.0). :)

EDIT: Oh, upon looking at that thread, if you think diving and living on the first try is cool, look at Rian. She did it on her first time WITH LAG.

Actually I didn't know what "dive" meant before this sequence (I'm not a native english speaker) so I went full burner to the right... Avoided the Sath with at least 50 meters left.

I did... But then I subsequently got killed by the blast of a Shivan Comm Node and had to replay the mission again... On my second, third, forth and fifth tries I went up.

Looking back I can't help thinking I was a complete retard back then.

Gonna come back with a bit of explanation.

I've been playing Discovery Freelancer. Got some old HLP-guys together there, and we founded the NTF, the Neo Terran Front, there. The ]NTF[ is much different than FS2 NTF. We're rebels, but not to the extent of the rebellion in this universe.

Anyway, our main line whenever someone gives us issues, is,

"The NTF is the ONLY legitimate authority in THIS system!"

I flew into an SGreen once without really realising it.

Come on, you totally should notice when you're flying into one. Those things can totally mess up the paintjob on your Serapis.

Even a training laser can seriously mess up more than the paint job of a Serapis.

I DID see it. The problem is, I was so close to it that, for a few seconds, I became retarded and my mind had the same intelligence as a moth, so I ended up afterburning into it, rather than flying away from it. I was like, "Ooh, shiny." and I flew right into it at full speed. In an Ursa.

When I died, I did the biggest facepalm you can ever imagine.

Title: Re: Favorite Quote in Freespace

I'd swear the Hawkwood actually does try to target you with at least one of it's TerSlashes if you're roughly the same distance as or closer than Enif Station.

Just today, I was about a klick(possibly more) below Enif when the Hawkwood jumped in; one of its two forward beams drew cleanly across the station...and the other went clearly well under the station, horizontally, and a little overhead. Other times, it snipes you with them(it's not the middle of a grand wide slash); you're just minding your own business near the station(well beyond 1500m), and the next moment you hear, 'whirrr...poof!'. The beam is nowhere to be seen on the death screen, as if you were the intended target of a very short beam slash.

-------

So many good ones already taken, so... I'm not the only one who enjoys snarking back at the TSM instructor, am I? So mechanical, and yet so serious...

"Welcome to Training Simulator Module TSM-1XXx, pilot. Don't touch the controls until you are told to do so. You will fail this session, if you do not follow instructions carefully!"

After asking you to target him in TSM-103a:
"That is the lead indicator. It shows you where YOU NEED to fire your primary weapon, in order to hit your target."

I've seen worse, but it's not quote-related. There was one mission in which you had to defend a Fenris (or a Leviathan?) which you could simply order to depart, and win the mission.

For everywhere else in the world, there's PAL. 25 FPS, 720x576 pixels screen size.

And for some reason...

Whenever I'm playing a really intense mission, no matter the campaign, and that I manage to survive with under 10% hull integrity, I get hit by a beam just as I'm jumping out.

I've thrown my joystick clear across the room more than once because of this...(and had to replace it at one time cuz I broke it :) )
Title: Re: Favorite Quote in Freespace

I have a lot of favorites quotes from the Freespace games.

"Not sorrow but vengance"  Vasudan pilot
"I know why the Ancient Ones were destroyed, and I know what they knew. I know that if not for the Shivans they would have perished long before. Without the Shivans, someone would have discovered the Ancient Ones in their infancy, and eliminated them, just as surely as they eliminated countless billions of others. I believe it is only the destroyers who are killed. The Shivans are the great destroyers, but they are also the great preservers. That is why when we moved into space, there was no one powerful enough to kill us. Long had we been the destroyer. Our turn had nearly come. In the Vasudan war we learned how to adapt. We learned how to study our enemy. We learned how to overcome. We learned how to survive, and so we did. All the jump points from Earth are gone, but the Shivans can rebuild them. I'm told we can expect them again, but not in my lifetime... such is liberation."  Alpha 1
"I'M GOING DOWN I'M GOING DOWN!" Terran pilot
"Iota 2 has been destroyed. This massacre must end now!" Command
"Alpha 1 please respond!" Sometimes when you die in Freespace 1 a pilot says that. And i like the fact about how everyone seems to care about you, yet no one gives a **** about the other pilots when they get slaugtered.
"Ignorance is the greatest weapon of tyranny and old wounds open all too easily." Aken Bosch

Kappa 3: Mayday! Mayday! This is Kappa 3 of the 107th Ravens, GTD Aquitane! Command, do you copy?
Command: Affirmative, Kappa 3. What's your status?

I like how Command wasn't surprised at all after finding one of the lost pilots of the nebula.

For the first 2x when I played that mission the first time....

*Lines up 200m from instructor. Engages afterburners. Collides with instructor. Instructor says "Well done".
After you kill the instructor with cheats, command says "No reinforcements are available pilot, you're on your own!"

"That's not good enough Command, we're not properly armed out here..."
"Damn it, Command let Bosch escape!"
"We got to wait 15 minutes to change our shorts,....giggle...stop laughing there co-pilot!"

I always mix this one up: "You can discuss this at your debriefing, we now have rebel reports of @&$%&@..."

"Deploying support ship now, please stand by..." And get shot down?

Also, "Match my speed Now pilot, you MUST follow instructions if you wish to complete this module!" He seems like he's about to chuck a tantrum...

Wow.  I can't believe people actually pay for levels or gold in a video game....what is the gaming community coming to?  No wonder most modern games blow.

Favorite quote:

Xinny: "Picking up two more unidentified objects in the immediate vicinity. What do you think they are, commander?"
Snipes: "What, do I look shivan to you?"

My favourite quote is at the very beginning of FS1, when the player has to protect the GTC Orff from PVF Anubis
(it's when Alpha 2 says welcome to the player)

Quote
On m'a dit que vous venez d'arriver sur le Galatée. Faîtes comme moi, et tout ira bien !

Quote
Hey there, Alpha 1. I hear you're new to the Galatea. Just follow my lead. You'll be fine
(thanks to TopAce)

Another quote I like (in french  :D ) is in the first training mission of FS1, the very first sentence that says Instructor

Quote
Ne toûchez à rien sans que je vous en donne la permission

Quote
Don't touch the controls until told to do so
(thanks to Snail)

Its been quite a while since I played it (or anything FS-related for that matter), but I seem to recall that there was a line in "Homesick" where some pilot was talking about a rumor about the GTVA Colossus, but he called it the GTVA Colossal and that it had parts from 12 Lucifer-class destroyers as part of it, obviously a take on Kurtwood Smith's line from the Colossus cutecene where it says that 12 Lucifer-class could fit within its hull.

I also recall one of the concealed debriefing recommendations, where the debriefing officer is chewing out the other pilots for goofing off in the midst of it.

here's a good canon quote:

"What if there have been countless races... Stretching back into infinity... and like the nine cities of Troy each civilization had been built upon the rubble of the one that came before... Each anihilated by the Shivans..."

This is one of the quotes that always has me fairly certain that Freespace 1/2 are some of the inspirations for the Mass Effect series.

And, as for my favourite quotes...

Anything Snipes says, and the one that has previously been mentioned from Zeta 3 (I think it is) - If Command wants your opinion they'll - and, you know the rest.

I think the point was you didn't see Earth at all for the whole campaign, and still didn't in FS2. Which is why the picture of Earth in the endgame cutscene was so important.

I know Snipes is overplayed on this thread but he has a lot of good quotes. One of my favorite quotes is from “love the treason” near the end where Lt. Cmdr. Snipes is talking to the NTCv Severin after running a sabotage mission. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wN7j1cC-cKw Start watching at 2:15

Severin:  This is the NTCv Severin, 2nd battle group Regulus. What is your status? We were instructed to rendezvous with a transport.

Snipes:  Severin you’re late! Vasudans blasted my entire squad and two cruisers out here! You want a rendezvous? Scan that debris field! That’s the sunder right there! You’re a disgrace to the NTF, Severin! I’m filing a report!

Severin:  Stand down, Beta 1. We followed our orders to the letter. Now get back to base before the Vasudans return. There’s nothing more we can do out here.

Snipes is such a good liar.

Debrief:  …When you sign up for the wrong outfit you get what you deserve.

It’s been said before, but my favorite quote is in the exchange between the Colossus and Rear Admiral Koth in the mission “Feint! Parry! Riposte!”.

Rear Admiral Koth: “I have no intention of escaping Colossus nor will I surrender! Even if I send my crew to hell with you, this monstrosity will be destroyed!”

Colossus: Don’t be absurd Koth! You’re sacrificing 10,000 lives for nothing!

Rear Admiral Koth: “Your cynicism appalls me Colossus, I have 10,000 officers and crew willing to die for neo-terra! They tyranny of your regime is finished! Admiral Koth out!

Quel fou! To pay in blood for the sake of drawing more blood. How can one get to such a place? Very interesting.

Another one that gives me a chill almost every time I hear it is in the intro cut scene for Fs2.

“I remember stories of a glorious civilization, of cities with spires that reached the sun, of a blue planet with vast seas, of people with myths of humanity everlasting, of children who saw in the embers of dying stars the destiny of their race… and they hurl themselves into the void of space with no fear.”

Hopeful and at yet at the same time very sad.

That one is obvious.

As soon as I had that conversation with Sovereign I just had "SHIVANS" going through my head...Seemingly indestructible, incredibly advanced aliens that wipe out civilizations in a neverending cycle for purposes which only they can understand...

If that wasn't inspired from the Shivans, I don't know what is...

Also, look at the Keepers in the Citadel, they do have some similarities to the shivans depicted in Hall Fight.

The Protheans, leaving their Vigil as a warning of the return of the Reapers have an Ancients-like feel.  It's not hard to imagine those dead Protheans in the stasis pods may have shared the same fate as the last of the Ancients.

What's very surprising is how quickly Mass Effect became this massive story.

I mean, the original game was released in 2008, and now we have comics and books to further the storyline...Honestly, I haven't anticipated a game as much as I am anticipating Mass Effect III.

I just wanna know what will happen with all the decisions I made in my first games of ME1 and ME2...I played through many different paths, but my main path I chose out of "playing as if Sheperd was me" is certainly what interests me most in finding out its conclusion

Back on topic,

My fave FS quote is this gem, from the first mission of FS2.

"The NTF is the *only* legitimate authority in *this* system!"

The reason for this is because the faction I lead has been able to use it so many times in Freelancer -- with a ship called the Belisarius, no less. :D

Revelation is prequel to Mass Effect.  It came out approximately six months before the game did.  Books are easier to write and publish than games are to make.  I'm guessing game started first, book finished first.

D: I have read 4 pages of this, thinking about posting some WiH quote here, and here you come talking about BP and ruining everything !

So i was thinking about several stuff, but i can't view the quotes precisely so i can't quite tell you.
Aside from a few ones even though they might be partial wrong:

Quote from: Noemi Laporte, UEFg spoiler
Seven of us against a destroyer and a hunter-killer team ? How are we supposed to--
How are we supposed to keep them from running away before we're done with them ?!

Quote from: Noemi Laporte, UEFg same
They didn't look too interested by peace going off all the warheads...

Quote
Spoiler:
- Being responsible for the death of your admiral...
Don't we feel sorry for them ?
 - No we don't
 - No, we don't
 - ... All right then, i guess we don't.

All the tactical messages and stuff from the frigs looks shiny, too.

Now to come back onto the topic of VAs that was introduced quite  a lot pages before, i think the best VAs ever are from the TBP B5 Starfury Mission pack. It's uber immersive, you get to hear CIC infos, operators talking to each others, alerts, etc etc. There's even background sounds. The only prob is that nothing is displayed on screen D:

From a briefing in Awakenings, delivered dead-pan:

"The Iowa has been ordered to expedite the shivan retreat from Antares."

As though we were packing their boxes, instead of driving them on like stampeding cattle.

The similarity between FS universe and ME
Oh, if only you guys knew the things I know...

FUN FACT:

The second lead writer on Mass Effect has an account on this forum.

Anyway, on topic, Aken Bosch's monologues were my highlights, though one of my favorites for a few different reasons is:

Quote
"I regret your efforts to intercept us have failed pilots. You would be well advised to question the wisdom of your leaders. Helm... engage subspace drive."

Usually it's the delivery that nails it, but Aken's stuff was just written so well.

"Sifted the cremation of dust and bones."

"Carved in the walls of the sepulcher."

Just fantastic through and through.

Also a big shoutout goes to my main man Clarence Boddicker (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdZqKVcI9m8#t=2m30s) for rounding out the Robocop duo, with his "Twelve beam cannons" and "Section 21.3.5" with special thanks to "Level Rho" contributions to the cause.
