Re: Favorite Quote in Freespace
In my opinion, we should've had a few more instances of seeing the Lucifer kicking ass, especially the asses of our friends as well as a bit more development of Earth. Then, that line would've been truly epic. (IMO).
I think the point was you didn't see Earth at all for the whole campaign, and still didn't in FS2. Which is why the picture of Earth in the endgame cutscene was so important.

Re: Favorite Quote in Freespace
I know Snipes is overplayed on this thread but he has a lot of good quotes. One of my favorite quotes is from “love the treason” near the end where Lt. Cmdr. Snipes is talking to the NTCv Severin after running a sabotage mission. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wN7j1cC-cKw Start watching at 2:15

Severin:  This is the NTCv Severin, 2nd battle group Regulus. What is your status? We were instructed to rendezvous with a transport.

Snipes:  Severin you’re late! Vasudans blasted my entire squad and two cruisers out here! You want a rendezvous? Scan that debris field! That’s the sunder right there! You’re a disgrace to the NTF, Severin! I’m filing a report!

Severin:  Stand down, Beta 1. We followed our orders to the letter. Now get back to base before the Vasudans return. There’s nothing more we can do out here.

Snipes is such a good liar.

Debrief:  …When you sign up for the wrong outfit you get what you deserve.

It’s been said before, but my favorite quote is in the exchange between the Colossus and Rear Admiral Koth in the mission “Feint! Parry! Riposte!”.

Rear Admiral Koth: “I have no intention of escaping Colossus nor will I surrender! Even if I send my crew to hell with you, this monstrosity will be destroyed!”

Colossus: Don’t be absurd Koth! You’re sacrificing 10,000 lives for nothing!

Rear Admiral Koth: “Your cynicism appalls me Colossus, I have 10,000 officers and crew willing to die for neo-terra! They tyranny of your regime is finished! Admiral Koth out!

Quel fou! To pay in blood for the sake of drawing more blood. How can one get to such a place? Very interesting.

Another one that gives me a chill almost every time I hear it is in the intro cut scene for Fs2.

“I remember stories of a glorious civilization, of cities with spires that reached the sun, of a blue planet with vast seas, of people with myths of humanity everlasting, of children who saw in the embers of dying stars the destiny of their race… and they hurl themselves into the void of space with no fear.”

Hopeful and at yet at the same time very sad.

Its what happens when you combine armed conflict with fanaticism.  Kamikaze is a 'good' example (not that there is anything good about suicide tactics)

Re: Favorite Quote in Freespace
here's a good canon quote:

"What if there have been countless races... Stretching back into infinity... and like the nine cities of Troy each civilization had been built upon the rubble of the one that came before... Each anihilated by the Shivans..."

This is one of the quotes that always has me fairly certain that Freespace 1/2 are some of the inspirations for the Mass Effect series.

That one is obvious.

As soon as I had that conversation with Sovereign I just had "SHIVANS" going through my head...Seemingly indestructible, incredibly advanced aliens that wipe out civilizations in a neverending cycle for purposes which only they can understand...

If that wasn't inspired from the Shivans, I don't know what is...

Also, look at the Keepers in the Citadel, they do have some similarities to the shivans depicted in Hall Fight.

The Protheans, leaving their Vigil as a warning of the return of the Reapers have an Ancients-like feel.  It's not hard to imagine those dead Protheans in the stasis pods may have shared the same fate as the last of the Ancients.

I'm not sure I buy it. The Mass Effect mythos seems more like a cross between Saberhagen berserkers and Alastair Reynolds.

Mass Effect is very good... It's maybe because it "smell" very much like Freespace, like darkdaej said. The similarity between FS universe and ME lead me to hope that maybe one day, we could reach REALLY these f*****g background planets and walk on them ! Would be interesting to meet Snipes in a ground base
Never far away from HLP and from a computer with an installed FreeSpace.

See what you're missing in #WoD and #Fsquest?

[07:57:32] <Caiaphas> inspired by HerraTohtori i built a supermaneuverable plane in ksp
[07:57:43] <Caiaphas> i just killed my pilots with a high-g maneuver
[07:58:19] <Caiaphas> apparently people can't take 20 gees for 5 continuous seconds
[08:00:11] <Caiaphas> the plane however performed admirably, and only crashed because it no longer had any guidance systems

What's very surprising is how quickly Mass Effect became this massive story.

I mean, the original game was released in 2008, and now we have comics and books to further the storyline...Honestly, I haven't anticipated a game as much as I am anticipating Mass Effect III.

I just wanna know what will happen with all the decisions I made in my first games of ME1 and ME2...I played through many different paths, but my main path I chose out of "playing as if Sheperd was me" is certainly what interests me most in finding out its conclusion

Re: Favorite Quote in Freespace
Back on topic,

My fave FS quote is this gem, from the first mission of FS2.

"The NTF is the *only* legitimate authority in *this* system!"

The reason for this is because the faction I lead has been able to use it so many times in Freelancer -- with a ship called the Belisarius, no less. :D
"What the hell!? I've got a Snuffleupagus on my scanners! The Snuffleupagus is active!"

Re: Favorite Quote in Freespace
Uhm.
Mass Effect was based on the books.
Not the other way around.
"Neutrality means that you don't really care, cuz the struggle goes on even when you're not there: Blind and unaware."

"We still believe in all the things that we stood by before,
and after everything we've seen here maybe even more.
I know we're not the only ones, and we were not the first,
and unapologetically we'll stand behind each word."

what huh no

Mass Effect was a game first.

Maybe you're thinking of The Witcher?

Re: Favorite Quote in Freespace
hmm! O_O
I thought Revelation was a precursor to it, guess I read it when it first came out and didn't twig it was based on the already WIP game.

Re: Favorite Quote in Freespace
Revelation is prequel to Mass Effect.  It came out approximately six months before the game did.  Books are easier to write and publish than games are to make.  I'm guessing game started first, book finished first.
