I recently bought a Samsung n110 for mobile fun ie rom emulation and portable modding. I can now (and have been) truespace and UV mapping on the train.
All in all my new netbook does everything I want it to. I can watch my own dvds ripped and transferred via memory stick, using my mobile phone as a remote control. I can tweak audio in Audacity or tweak .tbl files on the fly. I've enjoyed a cheeky go on zsnes on the 07:50 to Farringdon. . . . But, and this is the biggest slap in the face from microsofts metaphorical cock I have ever suffered. .
I cannot change my desktop wallpaper unless I upgrade my os from 7starter to some other random crap.
What a load of horse****. .
Discuss. . . . .

Does it have a default wallpaper? If so, see if you can find the name of the image it uses and replace it with the new one using the same name?
-
Yes, well, if I were you, I'd upgrade to a real OS soon (basically, anything that is NOT Win 7 Starter). Just be glad they dropped the "Only 3 applications running concurrently" limit Starter was supposed to have......
-
@flipside, I don't even think I can right click and set an image when viewing it in slideshow.
Plus where's my mediacentre gone? :s
@2nd poster,
It came with the thing.
-
Why did you get starter?

Starter is a crippled. extra-cheap version of the OS for third world countries. No one in the civilized world should ever have starter. No one in the civilized world should even sell starter.
-
It came with my netbook. To honest I think i'm stuck with it. Unless I can cram another OS onto a 2gig SD card or a 16gig usb stick.
I wouldn't know how to install another one without a dvd drive anyway :nervous:

From what I've heard it should be sufficient to
- get a big enough USB stick
- format the USB stick to something (probably fat32)
- cram the contents of an OS installation CD/DVD and only the contents of an OS installation CD/DVD to the stick
- boot the netbook using the USB stick (may require fiddling with the BIOS so that the 'puter will actually try to boot from a stick).
-
dump win 7 into the crapper and look through some guides how to do a USB install of vista.

lol wut
-
Indeed. Rather look for a cheap upgrade for 7, or Linux. Don't use Vista.
-
I don't want to lose all the preloaded stuff like webcam software and display management stuff. I might just install one of those old desktop changing thingies.

:wtf:
I grew up with Mac, so when you learn of all the different variants of the same Windows OS, it's pretty strange at first...
...After all, there's only one grade of a given Mac OS.
What should be done by Microsoft is to sell an unabridged version of the OS (like Apple does) and provide you with the option of buying different grades of software packages to go along with that OS when you buy it. Again, I'm pretty sure this is what Apple does as well. That said, I'm not sure how it's possible to have such odd creatures as "Windoze Fanboyz" - with all the stupid crap I've encountered with Windows, it just doesn't make sense. And yes, those people are real...
-
I miss 98. I knew where I was with 98.
I'm off to bed now. I can't remember the name of that prog, I remember it started with an L though.

no offense to you but this accurately reflects my opinion of MacOSX...

the things you could do with a floppy disk in 98 :-) :wtf:

Thats an invention of microsoft from XP onwards, basically sell a cut down version of the OS for the price you would have sold the full OS at and then use that as an excuse to sell the new one at an inflated price

doesn't win7 have an upgrade anytime feature? from what ive read the best version of 7 is installed even with the cheapest version, but is disabled untill you upgrade your license. of course i doubt its like that for starter.
i just did an xp install to a flash card on an old laptop with a rather piss poor set of boot options. while it had network and cd boot options, what it didnt have is usb or pcmcia boot (which would have allowed me to use my sd reader or the cf adapter that i had in my giant box-o-adapters). but a little 5 dollar dongle and i was able to stick my 2gb cf card where its hard drive used to be. managed to cram xp and drivers into half of it, leaving some 900mb available for software. im still not sure what to do with it. sd cards can be made bootable, i have both vista and xp on sd cards, which can be installed through usb quite easily. you could probably install xp to an sd card, however thats if your card slot is bootable. i know the card slot on my laptop kinda sucks about that.
to make it possible to install windows from one of those usb flash drives, you need this (http://www.netbookfiles.com/1022/winsetupfromusb-023/) program and an xp cd (i know from expirience that xp will fit into a 2gb card). then your netbook should allow you to boot from usb, and install to the netbook's internal sd card. then its a matter of finding all the drivers.
-
I think you are in a particularly good position to try Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/GetUbuntu/download)
-
I'll need to get my hands on a mounter that works. As my version of Alcahol120% is unsupported by win7.
Then I can dual boot right? Somehow. . . . :nervous:
-
that program is notoriously evil.
but really windows cds seldom have any copy protection other than the activation, so you could just use something like daemon tools to mount the image and then create the flash drive installer.
-
that program is notoriously evil.
But................SO AM I :drevil:
-
So is Nuke!
I place my vote to start the Nuke Fanclub here...
-
I'd join. But only if he joins mine. . .

Really? I thought that Alcohol 120% and Daemon Tools shared code.
Regardless, Daemon Tools supports Windows 7.
-
virtual clone drive is better, is completely free and works out of the box no problems with win XP (sp2&sp3 and x64), vista (any version), 7 (any version)
-
What does that do?
-
... So correct me if I'm wrong, but this was initially about the good Colonol trying to change a wallpaper ... ?
Yeap. Going off-topic, right on schedule.
-
I found a solution which doesn't work. Yay!
Apparently I can't change permissions either. . .
But on a good note, truespace, blender, photoshop and lithunwrap all work fine. Not tried freespace yet.
-
I'd join. But only if he joins mine. . .
are there free hamnyurgurs?
-
Nuclear1 provides.
I'm just a figurehead. ;)
Ps, on topic. I've resolved myself to live with a singular background for the rest of my life on this perverted netbook demonspawn. . . .
/me prepares to develop a time machine with the sole purpose of going back in time to kick mrs Gates in the gut while still carrying young Bill to term. . . . But in a PC way.
-
you could try plugging the sd card into another comp, then overwrite the graphic with one of your choosing.
-
Wait...
If you can find where the default/built-in desktop is stored in the computer's files, couldn't you just get the image you want, rename it accordingly, and change it out?
However, that might not work due to permissions... Blast-it Windoze...
-
i find that windows permissions dont work if you put the drive in another comp.
-
But on a good note, truespace, blender, photoshop and lithunwrap all work fine. Not tried freespace yet.
Ubuntu, GIMP, and WINE could help you, if you want to take the plunge and go for a Linux netbook. I'd recommend it.
-
At this point it'd be easier for me to emulate another OS in windows rather than vice versa.
For the record, my OS isn't on a CF card.
-
cf doesn't seem to be any different from ide connector wise. all the adapters ive seen appear to be a straight through connection. they actually come in handy if you want to boot into native msdos without wasting any space on your drives. i only mention cf because ive kinda been playing around with embedded hardware.
i take it your netbook has flash built into the mobo where the os is installed.
-
It does indeed have an SD card slot. I bought a two gig card for my wii so space shouldn't be an issue.
I just don't want to lose what's on it already.
If there was some way for me to back up what's on it to an external source i'd go crazy with trying out different OS's. I've never tried Linux in my life and i'm curious to give it a go.
-
you can install them side by side, though no guarantees are made I've personally never lost a windows install to ubuntu, and you should be able to boot from a usb flash drive.
-
just get a super fast sd card and another usb drive , you can then instal whatever you choose to the sd card, i run one of the first netbooks that came out , "eeepc 7 series" 4gb internal sd with win xp on it and a class 6 sd hc card (8gb) with ubuntu net book variant on it , all of the systems were installed using unetbooting or a windows variant as i dont have an external cd drive , i did manage to get a cut down mac os running on it as well but that is anothere and rather long story......
-

This is why no one in the civilized world should buy a netbook either. Any computer without an optical drive is garbage in my opinion.
-
Don't hate the product because yet don't have a need / appreciate it's benefits.
On that note, I downloaded that .ISO that was linked earlier. It's on a 2gig SD card. Now what? Ie. . . Bios boot priority options, what would the sd slot be called?
-
Colonel, try this (see attached .zip file) - I don't know if it will work as I don't have 7 Sucky Edtion, ( :ick: ) I scanned it with AVG Free Edition 9 with the latest definition updates as well as MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware and it came up clean - see if it does the trick for you.
EDIT: If not, maybe try this? http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/47294-desktop-background-change-windows-7-starter.html
EDIT2: Right-click and "Run as Adminitrator..." for both of those, just to be sure permissions doesn't get the last laugh.

There is an Anytime upgrade feature on EVERY version of Windows 7 except Ultimate, for obvious reasons. So the Starter has all the features of Ultimate already installed.. they just are disabled due to licensing. You can get a Home Premium upgrade license for, i think $80. Enter it in, and poof.. all the features are enabled without the need to reinstall anything. The Starter license is only worth $30, so there really isnt anything to complain about, especially since you paid a few hundred for a netbook. Basically, you underpaid for your netbook and are angry it isnt what it would be if it were more expensive.

i can see where netbooks have a niche though. the idea is that most computer users really dont use anything but the internet anyway. those kinda people can now get a netbook and enjoy really long ****ing battery life compared to most standard notebooks (i get 3 hours tops with my asus laptop, compared to somewhere between 6 and 10 with a netbook), in a package thats light enough to carry around with you all the time. also if youre in an eary of dense hotspots they can also come in handy. while most of us hardcore users wouldnt have a need for such a pewny machine, and would much rather suffer the act of carrying around 30 pounds of computer, backup batteries, power cables, and software than not be able to back up our files on the bus and install games during lunch at work and play them later on during class (*nuke remember his old clevo*).
me personally i do without my computers when im on the move just because its too much ****ing stuff to carry, which sucks especially when you need to carry other things. i kinda wanted to see the evolution of arm based pdas but theyve been replaced by the smart phone (which sucks because i hate phones). its nice to see x86 come down in size though, some of them even have 3d accel, so you can play some games on them (assuming you rip and virtualize the image or use a nocd crack). me personally id like to see the death of the 12 cm disk format in favor of a high density 8cm optical format, or some bastard offspring of blue-ray and mini-disk (should they ever have sex).
-
DS9er, I didn't underpay at all. I made an informed decision based on specs and I couldn't be happier with the hardware. The os isn't permanent so I don't see a problem.
Not tried the wallpaper changer yet as i'm experimenting with ubuntu netbook express remix once I download the thing.
My specs here

-
no really that bad, but id rather get a netbook with a better gpu.
-
As would i, but i got this for Truespaceing, modding and general faffing around on the daily commute.
I get pissed off with people reading my paper on the train. If i had them shoulder surfing me as i was disarming the Sath i'd be all RAWR! and stuff.........

Right, i've got Ubunto Netbook Remix on a USB drive, all set to boot from. Bios is a go. I'm just waiting for some feedback from Boboau or Galemp regarding Dual booting.... What do i need (if anything) to perform such a configuration?
So far as mentioned, i've got the ubuntou OS setup on a flashdrive which is good to go....
-
use puppy linux to swap the image, no need to take the drive out or anything.
-
What the sweet galloping cheesy jesus is puppy linux?
-
A nice small and light Linux. Quite sweet actually.
Anyways. Since I had some extra time I did some Googling.
First I found this:
http://www.withinwindows.com/2009/03/28/surprise-you-cant-change-your-wallpaper-in-windows-7-starter-edition/
Then from the comments I found this:
http://www.withinwindows.com/2009/03/31/correction-starter-wallpaper-more-secure-than-i-thought/comment-page-2/#comment-5295
The second link should point into a specific comment to tell ya how to change the wp using the regedit.
Maybe that helps.
-
The kind soul who posted the exe link earlier solved that issue. I've put Ubuntu on my netbook and have absolutely no clues as to how it works aside from the quite nifty OS. . . . As ubuntu doesn't support my wireless adapter
Win7 does though :)
-
i found that linux could work with wireless with some persuasion. by work i mean sometimes work, and not using the latest encryption, and after rebooting a couple times, and draining half your battery in the process.
-
Oh, issue solved? Good then.
-
Thanks :)

Everything colonel dekker listed what he uses the netbook for he can get done in linux, either way truespace works through wine pretty good. This is why linux has live cd's. Use the unetbootin (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net) utility, along with an ubuntu iso, and a memory card or usb flash drive. Then give linux a spin via live cd via mobile flash memory on your netbook.
I don't recommend dual booting unless you truly need too. The idea that someone would use one os more than the other is sort of dumb. For linux there's thousands of free programs that can take up the slack for what you're looking for, after that wine may support the program you keep switching over to windows for if there truly is no linux equivalent. Other than that, if you use one more than the other, then just use the one you use more often all the time (this is why people shouldn't care for dual boot unless there's a legitimate purpose for it aside from trying out an os ocasionaly).
Anyway, ubuntu isn't crippled, you can change your wallpaper in it, and if you must, theme it to look like windows 7 (this really ****s with other people's heads  ). Anyway, there's a little help in the direction of how to put a livecd on mobile flash memory.
-
Linux won't detect my wifi card. So no utility downloads on linux. I'm happy just giving it a spin for now.
-
Find out which wifi card is inside of that thing. And google compatibility in linux with it. You'll be able to research other people's woes and find a solution. Wifi card compatibility in linux is getting great, but it's not quite all there yet. Sorry if you ended up with a product that was the small percentage.
You may need to end up using ndiswrapper. It's a cool little thing that lets you load windows network drivers in linux to make networking devices work.
