but really windows cds seldom have any copy protection other than the activation, so you could just use something like daemon tools to mount the image and then create the flash drive installer.

you could try plugging the sd card into another comp, then overwrite the graphic with one of your choosing.

If you can find where the default/built-in desktop is stored in the computer's files, couldn't you just get the image you want, rename it accordingly, and change it out?

However, that might not work due to permissions... Blast-it Windoze...

Ubuntu, GIMP, and WINE could help you, if you want to take the plunge and go for a Linux netbook. I'd recommend it.

For the record, my OS isn't on a CF card.

cf doesn't seem to be any different from ide connector wise. all the adapters ive seen appear to be a straight through connection. they actually come in handy if you want to boot into native msdos without wasting any space on your drives. i only mention cf because ive kinda been playing around with embedded hardware.

i take it your netbook has flash built into the mobo where the os is installed.

It does indeed have an SD card slot. I bought a two gig card for my wii so space shouldn't be an issue.
 
I just don't want to lose what's on it already. 
If there was some way for me to back up what's on it to an external source i'd go crazy with trying out different OS's. I've never tried Linux in my life and i'm curious to give it a go.

you can install them side by side, though no guarantees are made I've personally never lost a windows install to ubuntu, and you should be able to boot from a usb flash drive.

just get a super fast sd card and another usb drive , you can then instal whatever you choose to the sd card, i run one of the first netbooks that came out , "eeepc 7 series" 4gb internal sd with win xp on it and a class 6 sd hc card (8gb) with ubuntu net book variant on it , all of the systems were installed using unetbooting or a windows variant as i dont have an external cd drive , i did manage to get a cut down mac os running on it as well but that is anothere and rather long story......
