Title: Ads on HLP
Post by: Scotty on June 01, 2010, 01:45:02 am
Are the ads at the top of the screen self-aware or something?

Discussion about Israel/Middle East ---> "Want to Learn Hebrew?"
Voice Acting Board ---> "Free Open Casting Calls"
Discussion about nuclear weapons --->  "The Great Tribulation" (Free bible pdfs)
Religious Discussion ---> "Become a Pastor!"
What are you listening to? ---> Aol Music ad.

Just a few I've noticed.

Google ads scan the content of the page you're viewing, then pick a related ad (AFAIK). This way, they hope, you may see an ad relevant to your interests.

soooo, Google Ads check content to decide the appropriate ad? At the moment, the ad at the top of this thread is:

Quote
2012 & Armageddon Massive destruction begins before 2012 and turns into Armageddon

I don't think Google has much fraith in this thread :P

I'm getting an advertisement for a church in my city.  I think it's checking IP addresses, now.

That means that it's... learning.  :shaking:

And you think that's scary, guys? My advertisement is almost always about Colgate and their new toothpaste that relieves dental sensitivity. The thing is... the only people who knew about my dental sensitivity, until now, were my family and my dentist. I never googled it or anything like that. This is the first time I even write about it (I don't consider it embarrassing, it's a quite common medical problem). And I'm the only person who uses this computer.

I guess Google really knows everything... EVERYTHING.

Anyone who blocks ads on HLP or Game Warden is a retard. They should all know very well that HLP and Game Warden depends on ads to pay monthly bills. MatthewPapa and other admins have generously paid many times whole months out of their own pockets. I wonder how many of those could have been avoided if we didn't have people blocking ads.

You don't have to click on any ads. Just letting them load properly is enough to generate income. Spam-clicking is prohibited however, so don't do that. If you do that and Google cancels current AdSense account, we'll find out your IP-address and permanently ban you.

Aardwolf refused to let ads to load on HLP despite being informed how important they are. You can do whatever you please with him. As for me, I'm editing his title.

Bingo. Creepy.

I shall edit with each update...

1. Campaign management.
2. Star sonata.
3. Allstate insurance.

I will now attempt to seed future results:

"Monkeys. Monkeys monkeys monkeys.

Monkey chow! Monkeys love monkey chow, and if there were a chow I'd buy for a monkey, it'd be Monkey Chow Brand Monkey Chow.

Pet monkeys. Monkey supplies. Monkey toys. Monkey clothes. Monkey beds. Monkey hats. All things monkeys love. Things to buy for a pet monkey. Food, or in other words, chow, for a pet Monkey whose name happens to be Chow. Chow the pet monkey.

Monkey chow. Monkey chow. Monkey chow? Monkey chow!

I am interested in buying monkey chow. If only there were a link for monkey chow."

You can do whatever you please with him. As for me, I'm editing his title.
Allow me to tell you, with all due respect, that while I agree with you on the necessity of letting ads display properly, and on the irrationality and egoism of not doing so, it is my opinion that such measures speak poorly of you as a respectable authority, and probably aren't going to make him change his behaviour anyway.

But if he does nothing, he tacitly condones the behavior.

Ya, same here.  I have never seen google ads do any music or sound even.

Though apparently according to Google (https://adwords.google.com/support/aw/bin/static.py?hl=en&page=guidelines.cs) thier ads can have music iff the user starts it.  That being said any ad that I have seen on HLP has always been an image ad (animated gif) or text ads never any flash:
Quote from: Google Ads Editorial guidelines
Integrated Audio: Your ad may contain user-initiated audio only.

@captain-custard: I would check to make sure the ads that you were complaining about actually are from Google, and your browser and/or computer has not been compromised with an ad generator.

We should make an experiment to discover if there is a system behind all this ad stuff (which I guess there is), we all talk about some common topic and then check if the ads change accordingly.
Famous topics like... don't know... religion, death, evolution... boobs?

Maybe after knowing google ads can be modified, I can start to think of a way to beat Skynet
