Well, as if I didn't need a distraction from my non-FSO project.
Anyway, I thought I'd do this service for the FSU guys, and that I'd start going through FS2 and revamping the SFX that simply just need attention.

UPDATE: Here is a list of all of the sounds that need updating. This list is subject to change in length. Red ones have not been updated but plan to be, green ones have been updated, yellow ones have been updated on my end will be included in the next release.
boom_1 - Main explosion sound effect for blowing up a bomber/fighter/transport/freighter/small vessel.
boom_3 - Alternative to boom_1.
boom_4 - Flak explosion.
Thunder_01 - Thunder effect in the nebula.
Thunder_02 - Ditto.
clusterboom - Cluster missile explosion, as well as the sound of a shockwave propogating from a freighter, transport, cruiser, or corvette.
warp_1* - Subspace portal opening for small ships.
Warp_Open* - Subspace portal opening for capital ships.
Warp_Close* - Subspace portal closing for capital ships.
atomic - KA-BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
* If it has an asterisk next to it, don't get too concerned about it. I'm simply taking the original sound and EQing it along with some other enhancements.
For the sake of hearing this mod to its fullest potential, I recommend you play the following missions:
Slaying Ravana
Battle of the Wilderness
A Lion at the Door
Apocalypse

If they're 3D sounds in game, I hope you've been making them mono.
-
Lighting sounds aren't 3D and his new sounds are in stereo. But like chief said, 3D sounds should be in mono. In addition, please note sources for any sounds so that sources can be credited. Also, don't forget that copyrighted sources cannot be used in mediavps. So no captures from other games with little editing.
-
Good advice from above.. though it sounded a bit discouraging... I just want to throw my say in to encourage you to finish this project. I would love HD sounds.
-
It wasn't really mean as discouraging. Only advice so that he doesn't use time and effort on sounds that cannot be used. And yes, FSO 3.7.0 will have new sound code. It'd be great if mediavps can bundle upgraded sound effects to go with it.
-
FSO 3.7.0 will have mew sound code.
does that mean you have cats programming it now?????

Pure awesome...  for this project.

LOLcode!
or maybe he means they have average sound code? (μ)
Anyway, nice effects, Sigtau :)
-
The feline branch of the SCP is working on the new sound code right meow.
-
The one time I make a typo, this is what happens.
-
Yeah and a spellchecker wouldn't even cats that one either.
-
Damn, this topic derailed quickly. :P
Anyway, I'm working on acquiring some decent-sounding explosion effects. There are a lot of sound effects I won't be able to touch at all, due to the fact that 1. they already suffice, and 2. I'm trying to keep it sounding FreeSpacey while upping the overall quality.
So yeah, right now I'm working on explosion sounds, damage impact sounds, and other environmental sound effects.
Things that I can't touch include weapon SFX, engine SFX, interface SFX, etc.
When this is done, I'll pass it to FSU.
EDIT: Supplied the first post with a list of sounds that will be upgraded.

You make more typos than that...
It wasn't really mean as discouraging.
This time Fury discourages you. Next time, he will be mean to you. You don't want to know what happens the third time.

Oh shuddup you all. :( And get back on-topic.
-
Just a thought, but shouldn't this be on the FSU board? I mean, that would sorta make sense. To me, at least.
Also, I think its great that somebody's working on HD sounds, and I'm curious as to what updating the sound code means. Does that mean we get to get rid of that horribly obtuse sound table?
-
Sorry I let that pun thing get out of paw.

No. Also, if you think it's obtuse, head on over to the wiki and improve the documentation :P

I'll request a topic move if the FSU guys want this included in the Media VPs, but that's totally up to them--unless the staff deems it necessary to move it before then.

Sound code update includes full surround sound support, doppler effect, etc. last I checked.
-
Oh yes because we really need more sophisticated and realistic(!) sound IN SPACE! :wakka:
But yeah, the sound table's not that annoying, its pretty intuitively labeled IMO.
-
TBH, full surround sound and doppler effect would most likely be simulated to help pilot's situational awareness, experienced pilots would be able to figure out what is coming at them from behind just from the sounds genrated by ship's computer. Using sound effects is intuitive and it would certainly aid pilots in telling what's happening around them.

I'm with you.. I think we should turn off all sounds except for comm transmissions and computer alarms so the game is completely realistic... /sarcasm

It's not SPACETM (the one invented by Newton, with gravity and **** )!
It's the FreeSpace TM ( the one with fun, Boschbeer and explosions )!

Actaully, such setup would signify a terribly stupid computer system design, since simulated sounds are not difficult enought to create for a millitary computer system designer and can improve situational awareness of a pilot, increasing effectiveness. One cannot see 360 degrees around his fighter at the same time, but sounds can come from any angle, allowing pilots to avoid things like beams charging behind them, incoming fire or explosion shockwaves. As I said, this system would be intuitive and there's absolutely no reason not to include them in a "realistic" space combat craft.

I only listened to them out-of-game, but those thunder effects are fantastic.
-
I haven't checked them out yet, but I'm curious... are they similar to / based on the originals, or are these completely new replacement sounds?
I may check 'em out later... possibly depending on which of the two it is.
-
They sound like thunder. There's not much to 'change'.
-
Yeah. Main difference is, with less computer limitations in today's day and age, we don't have to have 16-bit songs at an 11k bitrate in WAV format, we can have 32-bit floating point 44k bitrate in portable OGG format.
In other words, these are going to sound much better.
-
HAY GUYS
imma try and get these done and into the 3.6.12 mediavps kthxbai
(Work still in progress, so don't fret.)
-
Okay, so, the new HD Sound Pack is basically ready to go, and Fury agreed to put them in the Media VPs for 3.6.12. I'll continue to add on more as I go.
Once they're in SVN, I'll upload it for all of HLP.
-
Wait, hang on. If it's going in the 3.6.12 MVPs, you probably don't need to make people DL it twice?
-
It's going into SVN so that it's in the Media VPs when they're released.
I'm just uploading them here so that people can use them before then. FSU says they don't mind.
EDIT: It's up.
-
Were these, at any point, tested in-game?
Because the flak impact sound is unfortunately totally unusable. It was probably well-intended, but it sounds...well, listen for yourself.
-
Yes, these were tested in-game.
-
The flak sound? I believe it's boom_4?
-
Yes, and yes. Can you be more clear as to what the problem is?
EDIT: And if you downloaded these early on, re-download them, and tell me if it works for you then--they were updated without me noting about it.
-
I'll talk to you on IRC.
-
Okay, flak sound removed due to it being pure ****, and clusterboom updated for quality purposes. FSU guys, please update the Media VP SVN accordingly.
-
I'd like to request that the new HD thunder sounds be excluded from the MediaVPs. Thunder has always been a bit obnoxious, but these make it even more overwhelming and intrusive, and really destroy the atmosphere of some nebula-storm missions.

The fact that they are loud sound effects is changeable with a table fix, which is going into the FSU SVN within the next few days.
