I am a cat person and most of the time when I come across a dog lover their number one argument against cats is that they cannot defend the house from burglers and bad guys like dogs do. I can see their point on that, however that is not the only reason to own a pet. I can point out many downsides to owning a dog, and yes a few downs to cats.
I would like to hear from the comunity about their reasons for having the type of pet that they do please post a vote before making a reply thank you. If you do not see an option that you like vote for snuffleupagus.
Be honest thank you!
Vote is open for 30 days and max 4 votes per user.

kitties <3
while a cat might not defend your house (not always a case, cats have been known to attack burglars), there is no guarantee a dog will either. theres a dog for every person, and what makes a good hunting dog might not make a very good guard dog. so its not fair to say any dog will defend your property and a cat wont. i wouldnt take a cat hunting, he would probibly show me up. id never own a dog, theyre loud and require too much work. i think of a dog as about the same as having a clingy girlfriend. they're always there, in your way, in your stuff, eating all your snacks. cats on the other hand have their own buisness. they do cat things, make their rounds, kill some critters. when theyre in the mood they come see you, you pet them, they purr. then they go about their buisness. they do hold grudges and do get revenge on purpose. cats are generally evil like that. cats are evil, thats why i like them.

 cats are gods! *changes vote*

I don't know if it's so much the fact that they can defend the home as it's the fact that a good dog is willing to lay down their life to protect yours. Lets face it many medium to small breeds aren't going to be able to stop a determined intruder all on their own, they'll try though. Thats a level of loyalty and trust thats hard to come by.
-
I like both, though people who bang on about dogs defending the house is using a poor rational for what is an irrational decision. Out of the 7 or 8 dogs I have lived with there is only one I would have trusted to do any guarding is mum's first dog which was a trained guard dog and our current dog is more likely to lick an intruder to death which is how most pet dogs is likely to react and most of the rest just need a few treats to pacify. end of the day some people identify with dogs more than cats sometimes its the other way round and its irrational. btw as a pet I prefer horses.
-
Snuff!
For the record, I prefer dogs.

I agree. I do not believe dogs do make good defense animals, if they were they would attack anyone who enters the house. How would you invite friends over? Oh and this poll is the cats vs dogs debate it would grow too large if I put options for horses, birds, lizards, fish and all the other possible pets.
EDIT: Fix spelling.

I have four cats (recently down from five :( ), and they're quiet enough to not disturb me overmuch and still be a cuddly pet.
<3 cats.

I love cats because they are not caring.
I enjoy the companionship of an intelligently self-interested critter rather than a drooling, slavishly loyal product of centuries of eugenic slavery!
CAT POWAAAA

If you're actually getting a dog for the purpose of home defense you get them trained in Schutzhund so that they act only on command. If your're getting one for a pet you socialize and train the animal to accept visitors. Even if they aren't schooled in Schutzhund most well trained and socialized dogs can still figure out the difference between an aggressive intruder and a guest. That said both require the owner invest time into properly raising their dog.
-
It's unfair, there are 5 options about cats. That gives them a statistical advantage. :p
Voted dogs, because I have many of them (all English Setters) and also remember those who died due to their lifespan, which is so much shorter than ours. I use them for hunting purposes, something cats can't do. I see cats are more popular, but I find them diffident and not as loyal as dogs.

Ok, I admit that with propper training a pet dog can do very well with home defense. But I would prefer an animal that I don't have to worry about being afraid of or other people being afraid of. I had a cat before that was mistreated in its past and did attack me and we had to put the poor thing down. However that is the only instance that I have ever come across a cat that acted agressive against me.Whereas I hear stories of people getting attacked by dogs all the time.

Original vote options were 4 vote options for dogs and 4 vote options for cats... moderator added option for cats are gods. :sigh: I would like to add another option for dogs, any suggestions??

Again it comes down to breeding and training. If dogs have been well socialized and trained then they aren't walking round on a hair trigger ready to go berserk. Some breeds are more assertive and require more attention during training but all in all if a dog is aggressive and uncontrollable then I'd generally look at the owner or the breeder rather then assuming all dogs are big, scary and aggressive.

If they act only on command, how can they be effective for home defense? If you're there to give the command, I'd rate it more than likely you won't need to.

Just yesterday I met a cat while I was walking around barefoot in a guest bathroom. This cat was adorable: it started jumping on my feet, rolling over, and sliding down to the floor over and over again. Then it would rub its cheeks all over my ankles. It was so lovable and cute!
Of course it was only marking me as territory with the scent glands in its cheeks. I LOVE CATS.
-
some cats are cute, and some are evil little bastards. they are all fking insane though.
dogs are playful and smart. they've got personality.

Hunting, I told you.
-
Cats >> dogs
Graceful, cute, cuddly, clean, and more importantly, quiet. Dogs are dirty, loud, relatively clumsy, and obnoxious. It's also much easier to give a cat attention since they can sleep on your lap or chest while you're doing work on the computer or watching tv. Also unlike dogs cats sleep most of the day by default, which makes them far less demanding.

Fine, for every role a cat provides in society, pretty much hunting rodents and companionship, there are over a dozen dog breeds that fulfill the same roles, and with that you've haven't even scratched the surface of dogs' utility. Herding, droving, tracking, hunting, retrieving, drug and bomb detection, protection, police work, patrol, search and rescue, combat, therapy, assistance for the blind/deaf/disabled/epileptics, basically any role in human society that their trainability, senses, speed or strength could be of use they have been bred and trained to fulfill that role. Cats do their thing and they do it well, but from the standpoint of usefulness and impact on human society domesticated dogs are probably the most important animal, except for perhaps horses, though to be fair horses main utility has long been replaced by the I.C.E.

That is valid only in 100% urban environments. Test the differences between dogs and cats in a garden, and you'll see. Going for a walk with dogs is a pleasure.

That's exactly why cats are great!
Dogs are useful. Dogs are obedient. Dogs are loving and faithful and HRRRRBAAAAAARF
They're cowed little gene-slaves, captive wolves bred for utility and obedience until their brains have literally rotated in their skulls. With a cat, you're never sure who's in charge...who's exploiting who. It's a tense and uneasy partnership and the cat's affections are made all the more rewarding by its cunning and self-interest.
not that i really care that strongly but it's way more fun to argue

Cats are actually all of it.
Which side of her personality a cat shows you, depends on if she/he likes you, likes you a bit, don't like you and hate you. :P
My cats ( i've two ) are very nice, very cute, very attached. To me.
Recently, a old buddie visited. He doesn't like animals ( except as food ) and my cats ignored him, they seem to notice if someone likes pets or not as i've observed such behaviour over the years.
Despire my warning, he tried to pet one of them, she attacked him.
It was the fight David vs Goliath. :P
The wounds aren't deep, but the blood was running a bit nevertheless.
He had to see a doctor to clean up the wounds ( hand and arm ) to avoid a infection.
Cat 1 : 0 Human :P
dogs are playful and smart. they've got personality.
So do cats.
It's not that i don't prefer cats over dogs ( i had a dog as teenager), it's the fact that i don't have the time to Wok the Dog and such.
Cats are more "self-sustaining" then dogs, they have their own business ( and you don't better not **** around with 'em when they do it ).

In poor words, you prefer cats because you like engaging psychological battles with them to determine who's superior? I can only imagine how Sigmund Freud would have described a similar behavior...
Also, I have to assume that you don't have a lot of experience with dogs: if you don't train them very well and/or show them who's the "boss", dogs can actually become arrogant, if you pardon the term.
-
Don't really care about either. Don't hate or like them since I'm allergic I can't have either anyway. But as far as stray/ferral cats go the only good one is one in my crosshairs. Sick and tired of 1000s of dollars of property damage every year from them.

I more want an unconditionally loving and adoring pet than I want an unconditionally loving and adoring wife. I want an equal, not a slobbering meathead!
Oh and Sigmund Freud was a pseudoscientific hack who ruined the lives of thousands if not millions of women. He should be consigned to the dustbin of history!
o mobius, we can always rely on you to take things seriously

The dog I spent most of my time around as a child was very friendly and protective. He walked around with his head on top of mine and drooled all over my face.
-
Besides all the other points in favour of dogs. I would point out that dogs are generally much more smart than cats, they just have that loyal streak due to being descended from pack animals.
I've owned cats, I own dogs, I'm around cats (my girlfriends) all the time.
My dogs are much more intelligent, much more fun (and because one of them is a rescue, she can be more independent and trouble than a cat ever was) and generally much more pleasant to be around (for all that Jodie, the 11 year old rescue, can be a pain at times, she realises that she's stepped out of line after very little telling off). Also, I can excercise with my dogs, taking them hiking and camping, etc etc. Which I could never do with cats for obvious reasons.
Oh, and Batts, you may not want a wife who loves you unconditionally, that's true, but a dog isn't like that, treat a dog right and it will love you, wrong it, and they can get violent/angry. A cat, however, is the kinda ***** that would run off and cheat on you with anything that has two legs, no matter how you treat it.
Edit:
Spelling. God, I need a new keyboard.
-
I dislike both. If I wanted a living being that was dependent on me, I'd probably get a leech. That way, at least I would know what it was after.
That said, I dislike cats more than dogs. (http://www.cracked.com/article/226_6-adorable-cat-behaviors-with-shockingly-evil-explanations/)

Actually, that's the cat's equivalent of cooking food. Meat laden with adrenaline is easier to digest, or so I heard.
Also, evil? Really?

ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOCAT!
Seriously, Cats are cooler 'cos they have more memes. In addition, the Internet is made of cats (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zi8VTeDHjcM).

what do they do?
Everything from using the yard as a big litter box requiring hundreds of dollars of new mulch a year to breaking solar and xmas lights. Destruction of plants from spraying which also does a good job on paint.
Forgot turning on the security lights all night running up the electric bill. Might have one or 2 wild animals that do as well but it's 99% cats.

Pretty much word-for-word what I would have said.
My family has owned several examples of cats and dogs, and I have never ever liked the dogs. If they like you, they're irritating pests who won't leave you alone. If they don't like you, they're smelly disgusting creatures that just make messes that you then have to clean up.
-
:(
I like them both!
-
As do I. :\
I have 7 cats and 3 dogs.
-
I do love the various Grumman bred cats.
-
As do I. :\
I have 7 cats and 3 dogs.
I like them both, I just prefer dogs by a rather large margin.
-
Cats are infinitely easier to take care of. If you let our dog and cat loose in the woods, the cat would probably do fine as long as she could avoid larger predators. The dog would probably lay down and starve to death, stupid beast that it is. Dogs are such dumb animals. Replace them with robots, robots don't bite when you try to wash them.
-
How the hell are cats companions? They avoid all day until the need you, then go away again.
And more importantly, my neighbours buy them, and then let them outside to use our sandbox as their toilet.
-

truly the cat is a mighty beast, with all the prerogatives of royalty
-
Yea I really wish I could shoot the owners that let them out but unfortunately that's not legal and none of them would ever own up to owning one anyway. If they did I could file for damages under the law. Until then thankfully cats are classified as farm animals ans not pets here so I have the legal right to do anything up to killing them to keep them from damaging my property.
On the other hand if I could have a pet it would probably be a cat for the reasons just stated. They are independent. It would also never leave the house unless on a leash or in a carrier.
-

my kitten hasn't let me out of her sight since I came back from college. she pretends like she's not following me around, and it's adorable
-
both are cute, but I've lived with dogs for a huge chunk of my childhood so my vote's going to them.
Wait. No choice for pet Shivan? ;7
-
Not all dogs are stupid, iamzack. My dad had this really smart lab, good dog. Memorized all sorts of phrases and what they meant. He died of cancer a couple of years ago. :(
-
OMFG! It's a frikking kitty loving convention!
Tell me, is your cat gonna warn the rescue teams when you are below two tons of debris?
NO, he's just gonna lick his pawns looking at the hole mess from the roof of your neighbour.
Give me a break, the only kitties I love are the ones that are not furry at all :P
-
Tell me, is your cat gonna warn the rescue teams when you are below two tons of debris?
Tell me, how many types of dogs are likely to do that as well?
And, interestingly enough, I have no doubt that at least one of ours would (aside from the fact that if I'm trapped in two tons of debris, it's my own damn fault and I'll probably be dead anyway.

Not only are cats useless, they're an anagram of scat. Which we all know is bad.
Cats utilise apparant cuteness to appeal to some innate need to care for non-contributory members of a species who's only purpose in life is to spray cat fluids over everything you own.
Cats smell.
Cats don't have any ability to learn.
Cats smell.
Cats would rather lick themselves than defend the home.
Cats smell.
Dogs are smarter than a cat will ever be, there is no argument for cats being smart because their owners are too stupid to realise they're being used.
Cats smell.
-
LIES!!!
-
Cats don't have any ability to learn.
You've never actually been in the same household as a cat, have you?
-
I've never owned either a dog or a cat, and I can't see myself ever doing so (allergic to dogs, and most likely to cats), so Snuffleupagus it is. Besides, I generally prefer animals under my care to possess the capabilities of rational thought and speech, or at least the ability to develop such capabilities. :p

Well, if a house start to smell like Cat, it'd be time to clean up the litterbox. :P
Cats do learn, they are intelligent and strongwilled enough not to do stunts like a dog would (although there are exceptions).
A dog treats his owner as "boss", a cat treats you as equal in best case and as underling in all other cases.
The cats the ruler, the human's the subject.
And as Ruler, you don't defend home, you have minions that do that. :P
ALL HAIL THE EMPEROR OF CATKIND!!! :P

I don't like the situation i'm in. The last dog we had was an alaskan husky/wolf mix. Very self sufficient and smart dog. My family owns an island out in the middle of the ocean we used to live on until i was 14. We just let the dog go free, no collar or anything. She loved it. Then we moved to interior rural alaska, and i didn't know what to do. So i let her go free one day. Living here for 7 years before she died, she made many human friends, and just did her own thing all around this small town. She'd let you know when she wanted out, in, what she wanted, was playful, performed some guard dog roles, you could take her hunting with you (she'd tease the animal you wanted and keep it distracted so you could pull off a shot (good things like bears and moose)). During summer was interesting, she'd never want to go back in the house, unless winter came. She died at the age of 18, by getting backed over by my mom's friend in the drive way at 5mph. She just happened to choose a bad place to nap in the drive way and she was pretty deaf at the time too.
Never could own a dog after my family's first one again. Normal dogs are too needy, too dependent on you. Then the nightmare, my brother got a new dog finally. Very loving dog, another huskey so it's hyper as ****, playful, and too loyal. Too much attention, i tried letting her go free for a couple of weeks, but people complained. So now i feel bad for the dog because she's on the runner most of the day since she's a bad dog if i let her go free, and i don't have much time to walk her.
Nightmare situation since my brother moved to japan, looking for a family to take the dog, if no family, i have to take her. No, i'll take a cat, i much like them better. Also, my family got lucky scoring such an awesome dog in the first place for the first dog we ever owned.
Again i feel bad for this dog i might end up with because i can't give it all the time and attention it needs. And unless you have a lot of land for the dog to actually be able to do it's own thing, then it's not worth it for the dog just to leave them in the backyard, on a runner, or on a leash walking them down the same ****ing street corner every day (not really a great life for the dog in my head).
Long post, that's my thoughts, i get along with cats much better (want to get a lynx, bobcat, or maine coon)

Cats smell.
I don't think you've been around dogs either. Dogs treat you like "boss" as you put it only if you establish dominance over the animal (in pack terms), it's an essential part of training a dog. And even then, the dog will sometimes attempt to bump up it's own position in the family pack hierarchy. Dogs are, certifiably, more intelligent than cats. Intelligent enough to realise for the most part that it's best to cosy up to the hand that feeds.
-
That is valid only in 100% urban environments. Test the differences between dogs and cats in a garden, and you'll see. Going for a walk with dogs is a pleasure.
My family spent most of its time living in the suburbs, with a large greenspace behind it (a forest, complete with some wildlife including deer). Our cat was an indoor/outdoor, when the weather was nice she liked to go outside and wonder about the forest and the cul de sac, but when the weather would turn (the winter) she would become lapcat delux. Her wonderings did a good job of keeping rodents that lived in the forest away from the house. Her wonderings also had the side effect of keeping feral cats away from our property, not once did we ever have problems with them. The good side of cats being territorial. Of course at night she would be kept inside.
As for cats being untrainable? Total hogwash. Housebreaking them is a breeze. The problem is people try to train them like dogs, even though they are not dogs and dont think like dogs. The problem is the person, not the cat.

Here's the difference: Dogs are pack animals and by nature require a heirarchy to function. Cats are not. That is not a question of intelligence, it is a question of nature. If anything you could say dogs are certifiably more stupid than cats because they can't think for themselves.

I had a dog as teenager so i know a bit about them. The reason i don't have a Dog now, is that i don't have the time atm.
Once i move into a bigger flat, i'll consider to get a new Dog ( a french Bulldog ).
My girlfriend is more interrested in a Aquarium with fishies though. So are my cats.

if you're gonna get a dog, why not just get a toddler? at least a toddler will eventually be able to use a toilet.

You have to pay for college eventually. Or bail.
-
Why would she have to? It's not really a parental obligation. Neither of my parents are paying for my tuition.

WHY CAT MORE CAT
1- Cat is so much adorable than dog. Cat have fluffier technology.
2- Dog has annoying bark and slobber face. Cat only mew and rumble.
3- Dog require constant maintenance like car. Cat fender for himself.
4- Dog stupid and eat anything. Cat smart, cat checks food for terrorist activities.
5- Dog bread to for slavery. Cat enslave YOU.
6- Longcat is looooooooong.
7- Cat torture and kill enemies. Dog only bark at them.
8- Throw dog on the wall, the wall will get hurt. Throw cat on the ceiling, ceiling will velcro and happy.

Perhaps where you live. Coyotes don't mess with our cats. They've learned my dad will shoot at them if they do.
-
Coyotes ate the only cat I ever had. :(
Poor Kat.
-
Around here the cats are chasing the coyotes out of the woods and into towns. Of course a lot of that has to do with the cats eating up all the coyotes normal food and them being hungry.
-
It was pretty depressing for a while, I'd go jogging round town and there were a lot of missing cat posters before people stopped just letting them out. There are not many outdoor cats round here anymore, and we're a Boston suburb to boot not out in the sticks.
-
I had to leave my cat behind at my parent's house. I'm now living in a room of a house with a dog, and I've had dogs close to me for the majority of my life.
With dogs, you need to get them to think of you as some sort of leader. At the point they actually behave themselves, they're so submissive it's freakin annoying. Understand, I have dogs in my life I love, but I don't actually like living with them.
Cats, while not completely capable of fending for themselves in modern life, at least in practical terms; did for thousands of years, and still do in some rural areas. Cats are content with lying in the sun, eating, sleeping, and sometimes like to come and hang out. They amuse themselves rather than depending on people to survive doldrums (but will play with people too).
They're basically ideal roommates. Yeah you have to change the litter box, but it's much less disgusting than having to grab little baggies of poo. It's basically like having a roommate and being delegated clean the bathroom.

Precisely. They are cute, and then they are lunch. Perfect animal.

I don't get this "cat person" and "dog person" business. I own a dog but like cats all the same, even if my dog doesn't :) In my book you either like animals or you don't. The human need to label and sort ourselves to categories never fails, it would seem.
I mean sure, some might prefer to own a dog or a cat. But I don't get the animosity of one group towards the other. Sure dogs and cats don't like each other but shouldn't we be a bit more grown up then that? I see cat owners who hate dogs and vice-versa and it never fails to amaze me. Guess it's a similar mentality to being a football fan. "My home team is best the rest is rubbish and I hate it" sort of thing, perhaps.
-
Yeah, I like both dogs and cats, though I still prefer dogs.
I'm around cats (my girlfriends) all the time.
Oh! You sick pervert!

i disagree. cats pretty much domesticated themselves. cats were attracted to the higher concentrations of rodents, bugs, birds in agricultural communities. they reduced the number of vermin greatly, which led to less disease, and less grain loss, which allowed humans to make more beer. humans saw that cats were quite useful so allowed wild cats to stay in their communities. some made friends with the farmers. then humans, in their infinite stupidity decided to start feeding the cats, and give them shelter and clean litter boxes, so the cats no longer needed to hunt. people crammed into the cities and took their cats with them. of course this led to cats become mere idle pets, rather than the hunter/killers they are, which is sad really. cats are still useful in situations where you need effective pest control. they evin kill/eat common household pests like roaches and mice too, so they are useful.
-
Have had cats and dogs all my life, living in the same home. Cats are easier to tend for than dogs, but the doggie door has helped a lot, (less accidents). female cats are more loving than male cats. Females will come at a call of there name.
(edit) I have Sissy laying on my lap as I typed. :D
Oh, and the more attension you show them the more they want attension.
Also when the food dish is empty, a male cat is your best friend, untill you fill the dish. :p

both my cats come when you call them by name. but for me the male cat warmed up to me faster. the female took awhile longer to get used to me, but lately shes been an affection whore. they are both awesome lap cats. the male is a little bit smarter, theres not a door or cabinet in the house he cant get open (that includes the refrigerator) .
-
Yep, they can open cabinets, we have a few that can do that. Cats also bring us critters, and leave them on the floor, I guess they think we`ll eat them. :ick:

In the suburbs of America the indoor/outdoor variety never lost their hunting abilities. I remember all the gifts our cat used to leave us. Shrews, small birds, mice, rats, one time she left the headless, legless torso of what appeared to be a rabbit (her paws were all covered with blood, such a mess really), and of course those were the ones she didn't eat herself.
-
when i lived in anchorage i had this tabby who used to catch birds and then eat them on the porch. she ate everything but the feathers. i know she got worms a couple times because of it. of course mr cuddles has only brought home one kill, a small shrew. he also brought home a small bird once, but he didnt do any damage to it what so ever. i took it away and let it go. it flew away without any problems.

Well I didn't mean people in the thread, if you read what I wrote you'll see I'm talking about people's behavior I observed in the real world.

Some people dislike rats, snakes, fish, insects, horses, whathaveyou... why's it so weird that some people would hate dogs or cats?

It's not weird. It's also not what I was talking about. I was referring towards the animosity of one group of people towards the other. "Cat people" hating "dog people". The "my home team rulez the rest of you suxor" mentality. I don't get that.
-
you're thinking about it too much. obviously it's because you're a dog person. dog people suck dog dick. :P
-
Thanks for illustrating my point. That's exactly the sort of aggression I was talking about. Lots of self-defined "cat people" seem to be like that. I was just wondering why.

hey, i tried to break through his thick skull with a :P
it isn't my fault he's too busy being feeling superior to get it
-
im a cat person but i dont hate dogs at all. if a dog comes up to me and acts all friendly, il probibly scratch it behind the ears. my grandma's chihuahua was a little bit to hyper for my tastes, but that didnt stop me from playing with him. i might not hate dog people but i don't really like people who hate cats.
-
I will give cats this...they make for far superior image macros. :p
-
I like both of them... Cats are funny and cute, dogs are loyal and stupid.
I had a 16-years old dog, he went to the heaven. I had a hard time with that. :(
Now, I have a one-year old black cat with white socks. Her name is Isabella. It isn't cute?

ugh :ick: My friend just had to put down his 19 year old cat.

ugh :ick: My friend just had to put down his 19 year old cat.
19 years for a cat is like living to 100. it happens but not very often. i had to deal with a sick kitty, but he seems to be doing ok thanks to the antibiotics. we thought it was a physical injury because he was limping around. looked like his shoulder was messed up. he wouldn't eat and would just lay there and sleep. we took him to the vet and it turns out it was an infection. perscribed him some antibiotics and sent us on our way. turns out he was limping because he had some swelling up in his shoulder, and a little bit of pneumonia. but hes been fairly active today so i guess the worst of it is over.

Getting my brother's husky. I'll post a picture when i get her. Awesome dog, very pretty, the opposite sex likes her too :pimp:
