HLP is looking for an admin to handle most of the technical stuff related to maintaining a linux server as well as keeping hosted websites up and running.
Required set of skills is as follows:
- Familiar with Debian, Ubuntu or other debian based distro
- Knows how to secure (harden) a linux server
- Knowledgeable in linux networking, name records and DNS-setup
- Knows how to set up, maintain and secure Apache, PHP, MySQL, Pure-FTPd, etc as well as tune them for required performance
- Willing to contact hosting company when and if needed, they have live-support chat on their website
- Work with other admins and hosted projects to set up websites, ftp, mysql databases, etc
- Keep software up-to-date, includes php applications like forums, wiki, etc
- Time and patience to do the job when it's needed
- Able to do full server setup from scratch if required
This is not a paid job.
Please post here if you want to apply for the position. In addition to required set of skills above, please list any additional skills you're good at when posting your application. We may even take in more than one new admin as long as they qualify, especially if applicants have more than required set of skills. Having more than one on this also means one doesn't have to take all the burden alone.
Thank you :)

Holy crap, with a skill set like that, you need to provide some hefty perks.
Edit: 666th post. Again.
-
Perks, hmm? Well, nothing really comes to mind except full access to all boards on this forum, including private boards of hosted projects. You can find plenty of cool stuff in there, including some that couldn't take daylight. ;) That's about it for perks I imagine.

This does not bode well for this thread. Sounds like a job for...BOFH (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bastard_Operator_From_Hell)!

Getting to have the last word in debates is a pretty good perk too. :p

Oh most certainly a check (mine are sitting within throwing distance)
- Knows how to set up, maintain and secure Apache, PHP, MySQL, Pure-FTPd, etc as well as tune them for required performance
Yup, next to the DNS boxen
- Willing to contact hosting company when and if needed, they have live-support chat on their website
Done this before, do it at work dealing with the remote colo monkeys (and some of them are monkeys indeed)
- Work with other admins and hosted projects to set up websites, ftp, mysql databases, etc
Yuppers
- Keep software up-to-date, includes php applications like forums, wiki, etc
Do a bit of this at work again with the department forum
- Time and patience to do the job when it's needed
That's sometimes/often in short supply.
- Able to do full server setup from scratch if required
No comment. :D
Heh, if I had the bandwidth and machine(s) to spare, I'd offer to host/admin it here.
IMO, it looks like a pretty standard basic sysadmin skill set, especially when considering a debian base. I'd be willing to play the part of backup if you like. (No offense or random svn access removals taken or involved if not ;7)
And BOFH? Well, I do have a small selection of LART's around here...

Awesome rev_posix. I assume Zacam poked you in this direction? If so, thanks Zacam. :)
I'll let this run some time and see if more interested people turn up. :)
Gotta say that ability to host HLP locally would be big bonus if a spare machine could be found and enough bandwidth. Your svn is already using some much bandwidth that it's pretty much crawling, sadly.

I've always liked the idea of my machines being withing stumbling distance. Makes it much easier to deal with when a drive or something decides to start playing silly buggers.
Speed: Unfortunately, I'm at the mercy of a rather crappy upload limit. If I had access to something like FiOS, things would be much faster, but due to a he-said-she-said mess between the city and Verizon, my particular area was skipped over. Quite literally, every area around me has access to it, but mine.
For want of the funds to get the deluxe tier connection... 50 down, 10 up... drooool....
I'll take a look at the router and traffic shaping settings and see if I can't get a bit more speed out of it. It is, after all, quite the black art...

I just want to chime in here for clarification, since I know some of you have got to be wondering.
Fury, who has been doing this job for years, is not being ousted or anything like that. Au contraire, he's done an exemplary job, and we've been privileged to have his help and input over the years. What his future plans are are up to him; I wouldn't be surprised or disappointed if we end up seeing even more of him once the sysadmin workload eases off. ;)
-
Thank you for clarifying that, because I've just noticed that Fury no longer has the BP badge (what happened?)... for a moment, I thought he was about to leave the community. :(
-
Only re-organizing my priorities. Like I don't have TBP badge, I don't have BP badge either because I won't be taking active part on the project anymore. While other people seem to like hoarding badges no matter how much they actually partake, that's not how I roll.
-
I hoard channel ops far worse than I hoard badges. But that's cool.
-
Hi,
I think I've got the required skills as I'm already administrating a couple of LAMP servers.
I do not have plenty of time but I'm willing to dedicate a couple of hours to the project. My only "handicap": I'm german (only average english skills, other timezone etc.).
If you're interested, i can give you more details about me.

I've always felt that if you have done a large amount of work for a project you deserve to keep the badge even if you aren't active. As an admin you can still access the internals so you it's not as if you lose access with the badge like normal members would.

Like Fury said, he felt his work was done. There wasn't any drama.

I agree. The problem would then be determining wheter or not a person has done enough to deserve the keep the badge, which oftentimes is not that clear.
-
That's really between each project lead and the member.
-
I was always of the opinion that badges equaled internal access; if a person should no longer have internal access to a project, the badge should go as well. But whatever. :p
-
Well since they do equal internal access, if you want to revoke internal access, you have to revoke the badge of course. But I think the idea is whether you want to cut someone off from the project or not, not just the badge but internal access as well.

Sounds like anyone with an RHCE certification and some debian experience fits the bill - surely there are a bunch of you lurking about these forums?
-
How much bandwidth does HLP actually use on average?
-
Never bothered to set up such network logging, but if I had to make an educated guess based on short-term stats, I'd say all sites hosted on this server use up 4GB a day.
But that guess could be totally off. Guess I could install MRTG if we want accurate stats...

At work, I have to deal with RedHat quite a bit. It's very different from Debian/Ubuntu. The basics may be the same, but I've found RH to have a lot of 'odd' things in it for things like where configs live and what it runs.
It's also a memory hog. I can install a bare bones Debian on 64 megs of RAM. I can't even install CentOS (RH with the non-GPL bits removed) on anything less than about 512 Megs. Pathetic IMO.

Only two people stepped up to this position; rev_posix and duff.
With Zacam's recommendation, all admins are behind of rev_posix taking up the position. Last I heard he intends to take care of other matters while he is considering it further. I hope he'll accept the position. While I appreciate duff's offer for help, it's kinda awkward because there are no community veterans vouching for this unknown man.
I'm leaving duff's offer for other admins to decide, as I've resigned from admin duties effective today.
-
I could help with small things. I've been using Linux (Fedora) primarily for the past three years, set up a few basic servers, and would be willing to learn. Oh, and I would definitely avoid ****ing with things I don't know about.
Of course, it sounds like you guys really want a professional. If you need minor help though, I would always be more than willing.
-
I think a couple of subordinates capable of the more trivial tasks whenever the pros aren't around couldn't hurt, but it is more keys to hand out.

I totally understand you position (i had to deal with same problem quite often).
I think I'm going to stick around for at least some time. So if you need help in future, my offer still stands.
-

I like this idea. Maybe rev_posix could take duff on as a deputy.
-
I'll put my bill in for deputy, as well. I dont frequent the forums but I'm a constant nuisance on IRC. I admin my own servers (webservers, virtualization hosts, an IRC server). I don't care for the forums too much, but if there's a lot of grunt work to be done I can be called on to pick up some slack.
-
Was there any decision here?
-
Yep. Stand by.
-
:bump:
Soooo....
-
Yep. Stand by.
we're passing through the magnetic field
switch your deflectors on double front
-
Look at the size of that thing!
-
Seeing as there is another new hosted project, I'm kinda wondering about this again....
-
Trust the admins? Then wait. ;)
-
Have you not noticed the avatar and title for rev_posix?
-
Nope. But good to see that this is resolved.
-
Have you not noticed the avatar and title for rev_posix?
Yep, I now wield the ban hammer. Muwahahahaha
(Yes, I'm joking. :p)
-
I'm glad things got sorted out with rev_posix.
-
congratulations and good luck
-
Sorry for the bump, but I wanted to put this in now that I have hand plenty of time to think about it.
some mention a while back of a Deputy position. And while I realize that I'd be starting out pretty low on the skill set chain, for day-to-day stuff and training time to learn the more System Administration level duties, I think as a super-set Global Moderator style Administrator (to start), I might have plenty to contribute if there are willing endorsements.
I kept myself from accepting nomination because I don't feel I have the technical application skill set, but I can't realistically grow it where there is no avenue to use it.
-
I think Zacam would be awesome for this position. He gets my vote!
-
Agreed. He already has root on the svn and hasn't broke anything. ;7
-
Gets my vote.
-
I, too, agree that Zacam would make a fine candidate for admin. He's intelligent, level-headed, and certainly is he reasonable.
-
So that's two admins and CommanderDJ in favour and Hades' recommendation which we have to take as a negative then. :p
I should basically point out that it's basically an admin's decision here and we already know Zacam well enough to not need help deciding. :)
-
Can I be a thug admin and initiate a reign of terror the likes of which HLP has never seen?
post-an0n at least
-
A sincere  to Zacam! :)
-
I'm still waiting for my promotion to Supervisory Administrator to be processed... :doubt:
-
And I'm wondering why SadisticSid still leds the Inferno board... the guy is inactive. :( Me or Rampage should take his place.

Where's the Operations Manager these days?
-
I'm still waiting for promotion to Dark Overlord.... :(
-
Hades' recommendation which we have to take as a negative then. :p
:(
-
Hades' vote counts for +100
-
And I'm wondering why SadisticSid still leds the Inferno board... the guy is inactive. :( Me or Rampage should take his place.
And I'm wondering why someone who knows how this place works thought that this was the place to ask that question himself rather than getting the proper person to post it in the proper place.
I'm further wondering why said person thinks it is the admin's job to monitor the attendance of their mod's staff and take actions without their say-so based on that perception.
-
...and I'm wondering about all the loud noises (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOC-hDULX1c)... :nervous:
-
Zacam has my vote. The Inquisition stands with him.
-
Insane Roasted Chicken Consortium gives its vote to the promotions of Zacam to the position of "Lord of the Forums".
-
Uhh. What did...I didn't mean to start any of this, though thank you for the support.
I'm pretty sure it's not based on a popularity contest though. I'm just saying that I'm willing and desire to increase my skill set in an environment that will put it to use.
-
Its not a popularity thing. You just do so damn many things good enough that its sorta insane, and people have taken notice.
-
I don't think there is need to continue this. If Zacam is interested in learning skills required of tech admin, the admins will consider it. Public popularity contest really has no place in it.
