Title: Blue Planet - A list of firsts [Spoilers]

In no particular order, the lists of firsts that Blue Planet provided me. I'll add more as I think of them. I invite the community to post their lists here

1) The first time i'd EVER cheered for some thing that happened in game - In ANY game.
When the Masyaf jumped in to the rescue - that was the first time that I'd ever actually cheered out loud

2) First time i'd ever gotten to feel as the Player Character feels. And I mean really felt it.
Granted that Halo came close with John and the Rookie (more so with John) and Kyte from .hack//
 
3) First time I'd ever played a lesbian character.
I play Mass Effect as the default male Sheppard so WiH was the first time I'd ever played

4) First time I'd ever seen game-engine rendered cutscenes of such cinematic quality
There is of course one exception - Master Chief's dive with the bomb in Halo 2 - But that's it nothing else comes close the the Intro and Outro of WiH

My first time hating Earth.
First time getting killed but surviving, bleeding out and using stims etc.
 
First time i'd killed Xinny and Zero outside of a hacked Freespace 2 SOC mission.

First time rooting for the antagonists.  Pacifistic Ubuntu losers. :P

First time I haven't felt like some ridiculous super-pilot.

First time I've seen capships used in a way that makes sense both in real(ish) life tactics and in gameplay.

First time (except with the possible exception of the NTF Iceni) the enemy had the sense to jump out instead of letting me kill them.

It makes a lot of the warship captains in canon FreeSpace look like idiots  ;)

Let's just say that the jumpdrives back then couldn't charge up fast enough and the Iceny was the first ship to have such fast-charging drives  :P

If this isn't about WiH only, but Blue Planet in general then:

First time I ever fiddled with a table file (namely playing around with the beam-pierce effects when they first came out).
First time I ever auditioned (and made it) for voice acting.

I felt some sympathy for them, but only in the mission where they stole that Anemoi (that was the name?) from the GTVA.

And for the main character as well... but just at the very end.

what happened with the BP's site?

All data regarding ship classes, prose and stuff is gone.

We thought it wasn't up to snuff. It's being overhauled. In the meantime you can find everything on ModDB or in the techroom.

I was referring to the UEF, but at the very end you start seeing some balls on the earth side as well.

Jovians and Martians are not as softy as terrans... so I guess it's ok.

List of firsts:

* First time my frame rate fell below 10 FPS;
* First time my frame rate fell below what the FPS counter could read (4 FPS);
* First time I actually got annoyed by recoil;
* First time I used a female profile picture;
* First time I died because I wasn't looking at my shields;
* First time I evaded Trebuchet missiles fired by the AI;
* First time I deliberately manage to evade missiles without using a countermeasure;
* First time my ship's hull increased as a result of rearming;
* First time I chose a Morning Star for bomb interception;
* First time I cheated to get a debrief;
* First time I failed to locate a fighterbay;
* First time I flew backwards on afterburners;
* First time I used Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended for something related to FreeSpace in a serious manner;
* First time I used Adobe After Effects CS4 for something related to FreeSpace; and
* First time I turned off my reticle by accident.

That's about it, I guess.

* First time I've played a lesbian. I can't already relate easily to a female character, I can relate even less to one attracted to women
* First time I've paused in the middle of a FS2 campaign because I couldn't stomach more scenaristic punches to the gut

Hey, also first time I can't play a mission because even with the lowest settings evar the fps is below 1. But I guess everyone know that already.

Well I guess a female acquaintance who he knows IRL who isn't attracted to women will make a similar character ingame more relatable.

General Battuta, I'm a gay male. I have trouble relating to women at all (at least with straight women I share the attraction to men?). Don't mistake my words though — having a lesbian character makes it harder for me to relate, not impossible. So far I'm doing okay with WiH.

As for "scenaristic", sorry, I guess I did some dumb translation from French there (I have English as a third language...). Please understand "scenaristic punches to the gut" as "punches in the gut dealt by a scenario." I've been through this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_Malagasy_political_crisis) last year and still have to deal with the aftermath (the wiki doesn't mention that the crisis is still ongoing as of now), so playing a game as the constantly losing side hits rather close to home.

It strikes me that Laporte's sexual orientation is a very, very small part of the story isn't it? Future Earth seems to find same-sex relationships to be quite normal. Either way, seeing as it's hardly a big deal I don't see why that in itself would prevent anyone from relating to the character. She has quite a lot else going on in her life!

I barely noticed it myself, other than my inner 12-year-old having the occasional, "ooh, hawt" thought.  Their relationship was portrayed about as realistically as it could be.

Two firsts for me, one of which I've been pleading for ever since I signed up on the boards:

1.
Spoiler:
  The first time I've gotten to go from launch, to jump, to combat, and then jump away, in ONE mission, complete with subspace entry.  Seriously, that was fantastic. I've always wanted to jump from one place to another in-game (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=55640.msg1124230#msg1124230 (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=55640.msg1124230#msg1124230))

So having that was like christmas...a present just for me. So thanks guys!  (spoiler tags since if anyone had spoiled that surprise for me, I would have gone on a killing spree

2.  First time I've cared about my wingmen.  Creating a compelling military drama, and eliciting sympathy from the player, are two separate, equally difficult things. This is the first time I've seen them both in the same mod.

One of the civvie ships in the first mission. I found myself swearing under my breath when it blew up. Not because I failed the mission or anything, but because the briefing was so well written I was able to suspend my disbelief.
