Title: Ship hull
Post by: spyderrock48 on October 11, 2010, 08:53:48 am
Hey Guys, me again with another ship hull ! this one is 670 ft long, and comes equiped with 4 massive engines and 3 large turret spaces, 2 smaller turret spaces, 2 forward facing weapons spaces, and 6 missle / torpedo tubes! a little over 10k polys as shown in the pic, anyone like? lol

Looks somehow crumbled but still cool (again this remembers me at the SST-Cruisers :D )

I like the swordish look of the front

i like engine nacelles xD , and yeah, theres a purpose to that, if the ship is gonna die, and you know it, the front is designed to be usable as a ram.

I have a fondness for nacelles... but I've moved on  ;7..... to even larger nacelles with rotating pivots and moving parts for added levels of eye candy  :).

so basically the captain sets a collision course and prays the enemy dont pick his engines off before they need to set up the next run...

thats the theory lol, but oyu gotta remember that even if engines are taken out, at full burn, that ship is gonna have some momentum, and there isnt anything to stop it in space cept another object

Well, there's space friction!

Normally I'd say that in FreeSpace there's unfortunately magical space friction...but y'know, we did get capship glide working in Blue Planet last week, and there's a SEXP to force it on...

It would be a great successor of old Strattcom's GTCv Ajax :). Great model, but if it will be a GTVA ship, you should change the shape of engines - they looks nice, but not in GTVA style.

well this ship was not made in any particular style, and i really am not accustomed to what the styles of the factions are, i just make stuff that looks sexahy :)

It looks pretty cool. However, for a ship designed to ram it's targets if things get dicey, the crew would probably prefer to have a bridge that doesn't look so brittle and exposed. Perhaps you could consider shortening or removing the tower that the bridge sits atop.

well the ram is purely a last ditch effort that would only seriously be used as a weapon if the ship was going to die. the crew would lock the ship in a collision course and then abandon ship

No offense...

But where are the 10k in details? I have similar designs (not by me) that cost 1/2 to 1/4 your current poly budget.

If possible you should optimize that a bit more.  :D

the deatails are in the engines lol , i spent alot of time on those, and thus the rest of the ship is a bit lower in poly count

The engines?

You mean the part of the ship that's going to be covered up by massive thruster glow sprites most of the time?

Normally, I'd say detail should be uniformly distributed across a model, but if there's anywhere that needs less detail it's the engines.

haha i liek designing engines ok? and the hull isnt that un-detailed.

Well it's mostly the back of the engines you should not worry about. The drive nozzles/vents/ducts/whatever themselves; they'll be obscured by the thruster glow most of the time.

You could probably take up the level of detail on the hull geometry itself. It actually looks somewhat like a mini-Hades.

Battuta's refering to the GTD Hades (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/GTD_Hades).

Linked because spyder's not familiar with FreeSpace. :)

Don't worry abotu makign it GTVA "compliant". It's your ship your design.
Most of the stuff I convert is NOT Fs2 related anyway.

It's still a nice ship and I'd like to see it finished.

Just that later, on you might want to go back and make a less engine-poly heavy version.

I see how they are made but wonder if they could take less poly's to get the same or similar shape.

Less poly's overall mean MORE ships you can have on screen!!!

BOE 4 LIFE!!!

haha the ship design is a bit similar to the hades i guess, and i guess the ship isnt really that detailed, the engine nozzels are , and note that i designed this a while ago actually, but i was going through the models i had, and thought you guys might like this one. so i didnt design engines in mind of the glowing that will over them up most of the time lol

theres the ship in 3d, .3ds format, if anyone would like to view it, it looks better in 3d lol

looking at the model, the engines are pretty detailed, I say reduce the detail over there by half, add more detail to the hull and bring the ship to the 30k-40k polys and you have a fine looking hades style cruiser(just get rid of the sword thing on the front :P)

but i like the sword like front! , i think it makes it look aggressive.  and 40k polys seems a might bit high. but i can add detail if detail must be added!

Leave the blade, it makes this ship unique!

It's vaguely similar:

Beyond the four engines and the conning tower and the fact it's shaped like a big dong, there's not much similar. Your overall hull is more vertical, compared to the flat, broader shape of the STT. Lots of ships designs share a similar overall aesthetic. The real defining aspect of your ship is the swordfish bow (as others have already said).

And btw the above comment is not a low-blow, about 80% of the ships I draw look like dongs too :D

I've been meaning to ask a LOT of people this. How does one put their own drawing on their computers? Do they just get the old pen and paper and then use a scanner? Or is there some cool elaborate way I have yet to discover?

Scan it in.
Or take a photo with a digital camera and import it.
Or draw it directly onto the computer using either a waccom tablet or a cintiq.
