Fighter3 is some of the most awesome music I've ever heard in a game.

Holy camoly!

Thank you guys. Can't wait to produce more tracks to make the second chapter of War in Heaven a rock hard experience for you. :)

Thank you also The E and the rest of the team for posting this.

The first one would fit right in with the music of the X games (especially Terran Conflict).
Not that it resambles any particular song, but the style is very similar, which is a good thing, since I love the soundtracks of the X games

All 3 were great!
I really like the first one though. Perfect fit for the mood of BP.
Sounds like music for BP will be as stunning as ever.

Me like

The music score is one of the reasons Blue Planet plays so well.

Your contribution will definitely further that.

IMHO Fighter 3 could use a little longer buildup/intro before the guitars kick in. What is already has is awesome, Jeremy Soul style. It just needs a more gradual transition.

The first music and the third one will combine perfectly for the "waiting then battle" process (like the first mission in WIH, after the destruction of the fighters, we have some calm music, with conversations, and then I was asking myself : when will the ennemy arrive  Then "Apocalypse" begins to play, as well as the battle. It was a truly epic moment.

CAN'T WAIIIT !!!

Thank you Belisarius

Those are awesome; hats off to Belasarius. I'm glad you guys are going for origional music in future parts; the music you used in R1 fit amazingly but it always felt a bit wrong to use ripped music. Was my one sole criticism of BP (which as far as i'm concerned was beyond words in its greatness).

Shall have to watch this space. :)

Argh! It's Belisarius ;)

I'm doing all this in my free time and I'm not sure if we can make it to replace all copyrighted tracks with selfmade productions, but I'll try my best, I promise!

Thanks again.

Third Track 2:35 to 2:45 is the best part for me.

The third track sounds like it belongs to a cinematik?

It's abso****inglutely awful. Pacing, people, pacing! Too slow for fighters, too fast for capitals.

Works where it belongs. All the music was designed for specific scenes.

We never offered Belisarius a job. He approached us because he was so blown away by BP2.

Not sure what you're trying to say, but to clarify, BP2 never approached Belisarius, it was the other way around.

The General and Master of the Freespace Editor Battuta is right. I wasn't asked to compose for the mod, but was impressed by the first chapter. On the IRC channel we talked a while about my impression and then we changed topic to the music used in the modification. I said something like it's dangerous to use copyrighted music even though it's awesome. The E told me that they'd replace it if they just would find anyone with the spare time. I said I can try to produce tracks that fit and The E wanted me to come up with an example. It took me only a few hours and I came up with one. All team members online at this moment seemed to be impressed and I got a batch below my nick name and so I was hired.

It's true that I received a few offers for other mods, but I had to decline them all, because BP is my real love, but also something that requires much time. As Battuta already said each track needs to fit into one specific mission and one mission doesn't come along with just one track. There's three stages: Arrival with some scary music, the fight part that I try to keep rocky and the end which needs to make you feel as the victor or the looser. Therefore I have to read myself through every mission outline available again and again. I also have to play the missions that are already done or partially done to make sure I got the right impression from the mission outline. That is really time consuming. The composing itself goes quite fast. Before I started my aprentice ship I came along with at least one new track per day and so got the name "The fastest composer in the west" by The E. :D

Anyway, thank you again guys.

It would be nice to see some protection for use of copyright works in small scale, non-profit ventures (although true, some (C) holders decide not to exercise their strict legal rights for good reason) although that would probably work against copyright law as granter certain 'rights to the owner. Plus BP would actually make a pretty good sales package for some the music involved really.

theoretically, there is.  it's called "fair use" but bascially doesn't stand a chance if the copyright holders (or more than likely some bastard union that claims to represent them) decides to go after it.  the chances of that for something like FS are pretty remote i'd image though.  hell, the chances of anyone even finding out about it are pretty slim.  (not that i'm advocating illegal stuff because we can get away with it)

I am aware of but unfamiliar with the extent of the fair use defense, as my current jurisdiction (Hong Kong) doesn't have it or anything nearly as wide.

Original work like BP is less susceptible to copyright holders. A mod like FotG might run into problems though, that's why they have a someone for music.
Not that I'm discouraging work on the R2 soundtrack though. Mods that have tracks made for them will always sound special.
BTW Belisarius, what do you use to make music?

I'm using two programs. Magix Music Maker 12 for which I own a lot of synthesizers and Magix Music Maker 16 which offers a far broader spectrum of features and is more easy to handle. Only problem is that both programs were quite expensive (together I payed about 400 $ and with the new soundpacks another 350 $) and a PITA regarding stability. They often crash for no reason and even make other programs crash. Though they are really good, because you can easily extend the soundpool by integrating new instruments, melodies and even synthesizers.

Fair use is what we depend on. We've looked through the various tests and hope that we pass.

If I did US law I could help look into things with more depth, I have access to legal databases and law school training. But I do Hong Kong (English) law I can't help as much. That said, I believe Darius is an Aussie so laws between Hong Kong and 'oz are for the most part the same, Hong Kong copyright laws just quote a bit stricter (partly because people pirate more) with no equivalent for fair use (ugh), just a very limited educating/criticism/news reporting defense.

Of course, even the legal position isn't everything because copyrights holders don't always care. If I was in-house counsel I'd have better things to do than go after some fan-projects, and there's also a business decision to let people spread the music arouund.

Stuff like that is always expensive...
My curiosity is piqued.
If you don't mind me asking, what do usually use them for?

honestly i think you got off cheap with $400 for two programs.  any kind of media development program is usually heinously expensive.

I know. When I think about the price of Adobe's PhotoShop or Audition I could cry.

However, I'm glad that I have these two Magix programs and was able to produce another track yesterday. Maybe we offer you an additional soundpack download once the second chapter of War in Heaven has been released. After what I read in this thread I get the impression that most of you would apreciate this. :)

I swear, I've heard the tune of Violence somewhere before, in fact, I know I have, I just don't know where.

Wait... I know, the basic tune is very, vaguely similar to the Black Mesa Source Theme that was released ages ago (Similar piano line, different tempo though).

Excellent stuff, anyways.
