Something about watching good MetalDestroyer's vids on youtube like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUS4y6BEoAc&feature=channel_video_title brings great joy to my heart, seeing my models doing awesome stuff :D, but at the same time it brings me great great nostalgia as well as artist regret in such a rather... dated model. So the thought struck me, would you folk like a remake of the Hurricane V and Typhoon I? As in no crazy new aesthetic thrills as evidenced in my new designs, just an HTL sort remake including super high res textures?
-
That would be great.
-
That'd be cool :3

sexy
-
You leave me astonished.

i think i became so overwelmed with the need to htl nukemod ships that i havent made a new ship in years. these days i hardly consider myself artistic anymore.

i hear ya...

I donno, I feel the nukemod ships are fairly ok, seeing as they're all UVMapped and not tilemapped (big <3's).
I just take a few seconds to fix their uniform-smoothing and they're all fine and dandy.
-
Oh yeah !! More awesomeness in the next months ! :)

ive been incrementally converting my old truespace models over to max, which makes it easy to fix geometry errors and has better smoothing options. but im still struggling to find an ironclad way to normal map those ships which were just not uv mapped with normal mapping in mind.

In my vision since this ship is an 'older' model it will have a lot of pipey shapes to it. Pipes all over. Think of it like Galactica vs Pegasus in the reimagining to its eventual replacement:
Though I would appreciate any sort of hints or design features you'd like to see. If not then this is generally following my own idea of how it'd look.
-
the fighter cockpit in those vids is beautiful...I suppose its the 'showship' method we're seeing there...didn't know it was possible to build such detailed 'pits into the fighter models.
Just an aside, don't mean to stray from topic.
-
Hopefully I can make the cockpit look better. I got lazy. It is supposed to have a sort of partial holograpic instruments.
Just to ask, the Hurricane V is exactly 6km long and I do not plan on using tile textures. But this poses a slight problem... 6000m/4096pixel. This means that for every meter there is one and a half of pixels. And that is if the hull is stretched completely to fill that void. I can tell you right now that I do not want to tile. I can try to use a high quality normal map and alower res diffuse map so when you look at the model the normal maps make the model a bit sharp looking. I could tile if you desire, but again I'd prefer to make a single texture map.
-
Amazing stuff, Vengence, I've been testing and working with your ships too, and I love them all. Must be my opinion that I dont feel your ships are dated though, but updates like these are amazing to have! So, keep up the good work and make sure to inform when you're releasing them ;)
-
Yup

I plan to actually give this ship anti fighter weapons :D. That's right. The once no AA giant Heavy Cruiser will now possess the ability to swat fighters out of the sky. Granted there won't be AABeams or flak! The thing will rely on rapid firing pulse cannons. Call it preference really. When I do release you can change it to flak and beams yourself.
-
That thing is looking hot, damn. :D
-
Yessss AA weapons
-
Comments on the... uh.. pipe theme?
-
A bit strange to have pipes on the exterior like that, IMO, but still looks good.
The ones from the exposed panelling look more "natural"
-
They look good
A bit strange to have pipes on the exterior like that, IMO.
You could hand wave them away as part of the ships heat venting/dissipation system, the unit they all feed into could be a IR emitter, kind of like the optical? heat sinks in Battletech
-
Amusingly that was what I had in mind when I did some pipes. Some had heat sinks on them but I figured they'd be more pain than it is worth.
-
These look awesome, really looking forward to it.
-
Slowly trudging along. All but one turret has their base modeled in so they aren't floating in space anymore. With that done the lower spinal cannon now has those neato pipes like the one above it. I'm debating on how to use windows. I imagined that the entire top quadrant of the ship (the white armor) is windowless or has very few windows, being an armored shell. A very thick shell... The slice down the middle of the ship will hold lots of windows, Star Destroyer style.
Ah I compared the two models top view for the first time. The new one looks so much better!
-
I have never seen any of these ships before, and GOOD GOD that is a lot of Gun barrels.
I approve wholeheartedly.
-
28 barrels in 14 twin turrets. :3
New one looks more angular and aggressive.
/me likes.
-
Sadly it is 26 barrels in 13 turrets now. I got rid of the 3rd one on the under side. Aside from the middle one obscuring the back and the front obscuring the middle, I decided against a 3rd underside turret. The thing still has a ton of guns though.
Just as a reminder eh...
Some facts:
Hurricane V is exactly 6km long. So.... those cannons are huge. 16m bore.
A bit of the armor plate skirting out measured 20m thick.... I dunno if it is hollow or not.
-
20m of armor sounds about right for a 6km ship. :P
-
I have a small favor if/when I release >_>. Somebody have this new ship blow up the old one.
-
lol. You really want to crush your old model. Do you really hate it so much ? :p I can do it for you or not.
-
I see it more as amusement than actual hatred :p. It'd be amusing to see two models of similar looks fight.
-
Does the new one get the engine sections of the old one?
This ship was one of the first user made ships I stumbled over...and god...I love it^^
-
It will ;). But the engines are a hallmark of the ship. I gotta spend a lot of time on them and make them look great. On the other hand I also added some more engines ;).
-
OH YES. I love engine clusters :D
-
The ship is not supposed to have a fighter bay, but what do you think of a shuttle bay? Granted FREDers could still make it launch fighters >_>, but the launch bay won't be nearly as.... decked out to look like for launching fighters.
-
Well, you could just not give it bay paths, but rather docking points for transports :P
Of course, POF editing could still convert it to a fighterbay >_>
-
A shuttle bay is fine. If people want to use it as a fighterbay, I say let them.
-
Agreed.
Also, nobody says a shuttlebay can't serve as an emergency fighterbay. It would have trouble carrying fighters, but could refuel them or harbor one or two for repairs (granted, you'd have to get rid of the shuttles for that time).
-
during combat operations the enemy will probably sort the shuttle problem out for you, or you could just fly them alongside the capital ship while fighter refuel/repairs are underway
-
I really hate it when I run into snags. The engine pods are making me pull my hair.
-
Yup

This shot makes it look like the bastard love child of an X-Wing and a Qwaar-Jet. And that's a good thing.

yeah, now that you mention it, there's definitively a heavy cruiser feel about it
-
I had a GIGANTIC migraine yesterday for 7 hours so I got pretty much nothing done yesterday. Sorry bout that folks, but hey at least my skull isn't split from the pain anymore ;).

Its classed as a 'Heavy Cruiser' for a reason. Partly as a nod to Homeworld but also in terms of my size classifications:
Frigate
Destroyer
Cruiser
Heavy Cruiser
Battleship/Carrier (Non-existent in the Homeworld Empire)
The HWE usually increases size classes on a multiple of 2. Frigate is 750m, Destroyer is 1.5km, Cruiser is 3km, HC is 6km.
A bit of a disclaimer... truth be told I got the name 'Homeworld Empire' by one day walking into a store and seeing the game 'Homeworld' and I thought "Awesome name" so I used it as a faction name for my original universe. Just to clear things up, HWE is NOT related to the Hiigarans... but related in title only XD. Its... complicated in the lore.
-
Ehhh yeah I could use some help on the engine pod meshes. Anyone care to help?
-
Maybe something like the ones on the Typhoon/Hurricane6?
Donno how well they'd fit.
-
Well there are two snitches there and its me being stubborn with the lore XD. The Hurricane 5 is realy really old while the Typhoon is relatively new. Going off of them specifically would be a bit clashing.
-
(http://img543.imageshack.us/img543/502/hurricaneremake.jpg)
What you think.
-
They look kinda like the old ones. :P
-
[In a Russian Accent] Iz dat guud or bad?
-
It's alright. :P
The thing the bugged me most about the old one was the connecting struts, really, the pods themselves are fine.
-
I'm not really sure how to do the struts either. Do I make them like the new ones which can articulate? Or make them rigid, like say an Aurora Starfury?
-
Even if they don't articulate, making it look like they can is a cool touch :P
-
Personally I would be tempted to have them curve inwards and mirror the ridge detail on the side of the engines kind of like the crude attachment but not a severe
[attachment deleted by ninja]
-
For the engine pods?
I like the fact that they're straight.
They definitely shouldn't be pinched in the middle (though I'd be fine with them having a pointy tip at the front)
-
Slight combination. I always like slants and tapers.
-
Ok, that looks great.
-
That is fantastic.
-
Awesome ! Can't wait to see it textured.
-
Damn, Vengence.
-
It probably won't look so good up close and personal being as huge as it is. Last things to do is the control deck and the shuttle bay... OH! AA. TIme to do the AA first before I forget.
-
I like what you did with the struts
-
Oh the HUMANITY!
New Model Tricount: 40,000
Old Model Tricount: 11,000
-
No worries, FSO loves tricounts. hates texturecounts.
-
Again about that. I detest tile mapping for all but the largest of objects, even then I'd appreciate having an ambient occlusion map or pass to give it depth but FSO as far as I know can't do both at once. See the Terran stuff in X3: Terran Conflict works cause they use occlusion maps to give things a feeling of depth and surface even with tile mapping. But as it has been said can't really be done here. Or am I mistaken? In any case the issue stands.
6000m Longest axis
4096x4096 Max Texture size
1.5 pixels per meter rounded up.
-
Yeah, all AO has to be baked right onto the map, so there can't be AO with tilemapping.
-
I must joke as I cannot be stopped. This model was made in part using Boolean OperationsTM :D
-
Have you really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?
-
 You got me....
-
How the heck does this even work...
(hint hint AAA Turret)
-
Well that's kinda like the big turrets on the Orion...
which are AAA turrets.
-
(http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/502/hurricaneremake.jpg)
I made two different types of turrets. Large heavy AA and small dual vulcan AA. The large heavies fire ultra fast long range bolts. I'm not a fan of exploding lasers so they won't be flak. THe small turrets have a very short range but will likely fill the space with plasma.
-
Yay for pd guns!
-
If the pixelation really bothers you that much, then use 4096^2 textures then.
-
Its still 1.5 meters per pixel.
Unless you use two.
-

DERP.
I meant to say two, but I in my derpiness omitted that word somehow. :banghead:
-
If you notice there is a slight problem to your suggestion ;).
The main 'hull' of the Hurricane 5 is more or less a single gigantic, long, seamless armor plate that stretches from nose to rear. This is likely the longest object on the model. I'd rather not split it in half.
-
Big turrets! I wonder what happens if someone goes shoots a missile into a barrel. :p
Nice models. :)

You need to SEXP that condition :p I'm wonder how works the vasudan reactor core of the GVD Hatshepusept (sorry for the syntax). Is it hardcoded like subsystem ?

You don't necessarily have to, map most of the main hull on one uv, and put the greebles on the other, no need to halfing anything.
-
Well Hades... given the length of the piece I'm not too worried on there not being enough room for a good bit of the details. If looking at pro UVs from various game companies, I kind of know what to do. But the problem still remains that there is 1.5 pixels every square meters. So up close the main hull will have a few hundred pixels in height. On the bright side that hull is fairly uniform with nothing but plating, so it shouldn't be too big of a loss, especially if I keep the normal mapping sane.
-
Just to point out, the Hurricane is 6km in length only. Its actually a very slim ship. To compare with the Hecate:
I suspect the Big H5 is a mostly weapons platform. Just thinking of how much space in the ship is completely devoted to gigantic spinal reactors to power its huge weapons leaves me to imagine that the thing has a disproportionately low crew capacity. Especially considering it lacks a dedicated carrier capacity. Maybe... 15,000 crew.
On another note, looking at the nose cannon and the Hecate.... hehe I'm pretty sure no FS Destroyer would want to be in the H5's sight line. Though I'm pretty sure that the Colossus could probably give it a run for its money in terms of broadside beam cannons. On the other hand... I'm pretty sure the Colossus wouldn't appreciate 13 750m long turrets firing 700m long plasma bolts at 6km/s every 1-2 seconds that much...
-
Vengence, you have a thing for overkill, and I can respect that.
And that model looks REALLY damn good. I don't know what it's being made for, but I can't wait to play it.
-
Necro post a bit, but I'm rather interested to see how much progress has been made since May 6th. Is it finished? ^^ I wanna have it.
-
/me wants too
-
*Rico also wants :)
-
*Commander Zane jumps on the want wagon.*
-
I'm a bit busy with other projects which are at the moment more important. Depending on how things go I might be free to work on it more.
As for details on the model... the tower is becoming frustrating as I can't think of how to make it.
-
Bridge towers are always a fun part of the ship.
-
The problem is to make it look slightly retro as opposed to the successor VI model. The VI model is very angular and streamlined backwards. Also thinking of the interior of both ships and structure... the V model likely has a gigantic spinal generator to power all that Dakka. Plus the engines and stuff.... this leads me to believe that there is very very little space for crew. Cramped even. So the tower section has to look big enough to be able to accommodate most of the crew as most other places are too cramped for creature comforts. Granted the VI model (having less dakka) has a ton more room to spare. So... the tower section has to be big and retro... I need to find good photos of Iowa class battleships...
-
If you're looking for Retro to that style you could try looking at Space Battleship Yamato's orthos (Other ships as well not just the Yamato) on shipschematics.net, the images are a little small and fine details are hard to make out though.
-
Heh well its all relative. The Hurricane V is still very advanced... for something 250 years old ;).
