100 missions is A LOT. I suggest you make a smaller-scale campaign first. Like, an 8/10-mission-long little something, and see what kind of mistakes you typically make.

Ummmm....

Let me just reiterate what TopAce said. 100 missions is a lot. It's way longer than any released campaign so far. Plotting out a campaign at that length, and making that many missions is not a good idea for someone starting out with mission and campaign design. Shoot for a smaller, more achievable target first, like ten or fifteen missions, and see if you can tell a story and make engaging missions in a smaller format. Going for an epically big project as your first isn't a good idea.

I took a look at the missions.

Why did you post these rough mission outlines? We cannot comment them very much. Make them full missions, then release them.

Do the FRED walkthrough to learn about the basics of how a mission is built up. Mission goals, briefings, events, messages, debriefings; everything that you need for a "full"mission. I see you already successfully added 2 messages into one of the missions. That's a start. Now, add mission goals, directives, and briefings as well. Pick one of these missions and improve on it. Forget about the rest for now. Make your selected mission as good as you can, following the FRED walkthrough, then if you think you're satisfied with it, spend more time on it.

I suggest you make small-scale missions first. Forget about destroyers, juggernauts for now. Make a standard "Escort convoy from A to B" kind of mission and see if you can get it done well.

Remember that you know what your mission will be about and what the player must do to complete the mission, but you need to have briefings, mission goals, messages to tell the player this info.

Remember the plotline - is the character participating in events that drive the plot forward, in most missions? In Blue Planet, for example, look at how many of their missions take place with plot-critical settings, in the strategic scope of things.

Age of Aquarius' plot was awesome because, after the first two or three missions, it became a full-afterburner ride through a shivan-infested parallel universe, just trying to stay alive. All of that happened over the course of (probably) a week or two.

War in Heaven's plot was equally awesome because it maintains the same pacing. It starts out at a reasonable rate, defending convoys and ambushing capital ships, escalating into a full-on attack on Earth, and into a series of plot-critical missions for the entire second half.

However, for a 100+ mission campaign, I fear that you're going to try to put the player through every single mission in the war, and I'd strongly advise against it. Age of Aquarius had a small number of GTVA ships involved strategically in the plotline (only the fleet they sent through the gate), and the actual duration of the 'war' was limited by how long they stayed in the parallel universe. And even at that, the player ended up flying from the Temeraire for the majority of the campaign, largely missing out on the Orestes' share of the action. Most campaigns with a full-scale war going on, with hundreds of ships on each side, across countless battlefields - how much of that action does the player see? One percent? Maybe two? AoA put the player in roughly 50% of the action, maybe a little more, because of the short duration of the war and the very cool circumstances.

My point is, even under the best of circumstances, do you think you will be able to keep the storyline moving forward at a reasonable rate, when the campaign is a hundred missions long? Are you going to be able to build enough unique missions to pull it off? Blue Planet worked because it paced itself. I didn't mind the two or three slow missions up-front - but assuming the same proportionate pacing, yours would take up...ten? Maybe fifteen missions of relative calm up-front - and personally, after about four or five, I'd get bored.

Similarly, the action begins to lose scale when you just go full-afterburners for very long. Look at all the tricks the BP team used to keep AoA interesting, in the face of their full-afterburner plotline. The chasing down of the Duke, and subsequent discovery of the Sanctuary? Then the fleet moving to the Knossos portal? Then getting jumped by a Shivan armada, to have the Vishnans arrive in time to save them? The few missions the player flies WITH the Vishnans, culminating in an assault against the Lucifer and a reunification with the Orestes? Then a fleet-wide reunification over a Sathanas-kill? And finally a showdown between the Shivan and Vishnan super-juggernauts, and a fleet-wide escort mission back to the GTVA's native universe?

It begins to stretch the limits of how much action can be crammed into a campaign - but it is executed extremely well. But even Age of Aquarius would be boring if that plot material was stretched out to cover 100 missions. A hundred-mission campaign seems far too prone to either boredom or action burnout. Shock is only shocking when used sparingly.

Now, I bring this up not to tell you that it's impossible to make a good 100-mission campaign, but that it will be both extremely difficult to do well, and that it's going to cost you a buttload of time in FRED. In all honesty, it would probably be a better use of time to make a shorter campaign.

If you haven't downloaded and played Blue Planet, I'd highly suggest you do. I'm opening their missions in FRED, and learning how to FRED from them by observation. It's a great resource for learning how to put together both simple and complex missions.

I think it would work out much, much better if you just did one mission where you play as the shivans. If you're still learning, making a full campaign is gonna be hard to say the least.

Go easy on yourself. This stuff ain't easy when you start, but it becomes easier and easier the further you go. Try to make simple things first. Then complexificate them ;).

In pic #3, you have this:
percent-ships-destroyed
-0
-internet 1
-internet 2
-internet 3
-internet 4

This SEXP means "0% of internet wing is destroyed," so it's equivalent to "true."

Also I suggest you merge all events that come true at start-up. Look at pic 6. Instead of having in three events that start with "true," make them into one event using Add Operator.

Lastly I highly suggest you name your events, for two reasons. One is that it makes it easier for you to tell which event does what, and you can refer to these events using is-event-true.

Umm... ok... so which event is supposed to trigger "if  the ship are 85% damenged and than says we need more fighter support" ? I'm not seeing the 85 anywhere in your event queue.

You haven't done the FRED walkthrough yet, have you? You really should. It helps, trust me. Download "Fred Docs" from here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/downloads.html) unRAR to your FreeSpace2\Data folder, then open FRED and go to the help files.

So, any progress update? I'm quite excited about this campaign. I can see from the dialog you've posted so far that we're going to take a look deep inside the psychology of a race that's remained a complete mystery to us for so many years. If the finished product is as nuanced and well-executed as the previews, this campaign could really turn our interpretation of what it means to be Shivan on its head in much the same way as BP is doing.

Wouter, we can't. The pictures have been deleted from the server. We (as in, the HLP staff) cannot restore them, no matter how much we may want to. I refer you to my previous posts on the matter. If you want your pictures to be permanently visible you need to host them somewhere where they will not be deleted. HLP does not have the capacity to act as an image hosting server, so you need to use a different one, just like everyone else.

Seriously, how do you think the rest of us does it?

WouterSmits:

Take more pictures.  Post them here.  Then we can save the pictures so that they will not be deleted.

The old pictures have been deleted and we cannot restore them.

Talking about pictures servers what did you recommend?
Title: Re: work in progress sathanaas custom campaign
Post by: The E on August 15, 2011, 11:16:22 am
Photobucket or imageshack. I'm quite sure there are others as well, but those seem to be the ones used most often (unless you have a server of your own, of course).

Imageshack has been acting weirdly to me, so I suggest Photobucket.

It was said several times, upload the images to Imageshack or Photobucket and the images will stay.

No, wouter. Just No. We CANNOT warn everyone who has posted an attachment of its impending deletion, because the deletion process is mostly automated. And no, we can not and will not make an exception for you. If you want pictures to stay up permanently, host them somewhere else, not on HLP. That attachments are a temporary solution should come as no surprise.

Any further demands that we fix this will result in a warning. While we do give you more leeway than most regarding your poor english and difficulties in understanding, there is a limit, and you WILL reach it soon if you continue on like you have been. We do expect a minimum amount of decorum and courtesy, even from you.
Title: Re: work in progress sathanaas custom campaign
Post by: Zacam on August 15, 2011, 01:27:10 pm
As The E has correctly mentioned:

Attachments are NOT permanent and are ONLY temporary. The server does not have enough space to hold the website, the forums, the hosted projects and Mantis and all attachments for all eternity.

Which means that the attachments will fade off from posts. It is done so by automation, oldest to newest. That there is a message that informs that it HAS been deleted is the courtesy that you get (it is also an automated message, there are several of them that it rotates through, no ONE individual is actually responsible for removing attachments regardless what the message says.)

That being said, you are perhaps quite correct that there is nothing that explicitly states that attachments are not permanent and are only temporary. I will look into seeing how we can better address that or make changes so that such information is presented with the option to attach items to post.

those pics look... wrong. what's that red band in the last one? it looks really out of place.

Since you apparently lack the basic skills in fred, refuse to try texturing your own ships and don't know what gimp is despite stickied topics mentioning it several times for instructive purposes, i doubt anyone will let you have a hosted board. otherwise, make a request at the "hosted support" section of HLP, not here. if you think your WIP is deserving of a board then so would other campaigns like The Antagonist.

everyone's trying to be constructive and you keep giving up. seriously, what gives?

Oh.

Do you mean that you want the Shivan ships to appear as blue in the FRED menu?

That doesn't matter.  Shivan ships are red in FRED because of the species.  The color for the Terran species is blue and the color for the Shivan species is red.

Check (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=79620.20) your other thread. Blue Sathanas...accomplished...for some reason. Nemesis6 is the artist.

It looks very nice, which is disappointing because it proves that crazed, repetitious pleading can create art.

Text blue = Terran,Text green = Vasudan and Text red = Shivan and "Negator/Nightmare" aso...

I don't think there is a simpler guide to FRED than the official Fred-docs... Its a little confusing a first (trust me..even I'm learning), but if you encounter any problems, even stupid and "n00b" ones, just make a thread or jump on the IRC, there are MANY helpful people here (trust me, again?)

In all fairness, this wasn't the same thing in two different boards. The other one was the request, this is just a status update on the project that a new craft may be in the pipeline.
