No! It are win!

Seriously. **** that movie.
You know, as apocalyptic scenerios go, having the Borg assimilate the Romulans en masse would be pretty scary. (Or having Romulan experiments go awry, resulting in that assimilation.) Cloaking Cubes, anybody?
But yes, **** that movie. If you want to reboot the franchise, just reboot it. Don't do some ****ing time-travel plot that effectively erases the continuity of the previous five TV series and ten films. Also, don't use the line, "This isn't your daddy's Star Trek," during the marketing campaign, as it's downright abusive to the most loyal segment of your audience. How many successful businesses regularly say, "**** our loyal customers! We only want to serve people who have no personal investment in our services"?
Beyond that, I don't offer any criticism, as I've not seen the film. They clearly stated that they didn't want previous generations of Trekkie to see it, and I was happy to oblige.
-
It appears that they thought Star Trek is actually taken seriously by most people, and tried to update it because the old approach got old. They were wrong though. Actually, Star Trek and especially TOS is hard to take seriously these days, what with all the phlebotinium, moving at the speed of the plot, clichés and very retro-futuristic designs. Modern SF seems to be taking a turn back to realism. Science in ST is ridiculous, and it's a part of it's charm.
Trek these days runs mostly on nostalgia and the old-timey, idealistic feeling all the series had. In fact, ST: Enterprise seems to be the most "modern" of Trek series (though I haven't seen it, so I don't really know), because it has much less advanced technology and has (relatively) a lot more realism than other Trek series.

Yes, how DARE they make a Star Trek movie that is actually fun to watch. The NERVE!

It doesn't erase anything, the movie makes it completely clear that the new timeline has branched off from the old one, not replaced it.
You should see the movie! It's deeply flawed but its flaws are actually not particularly related to its failure to appreciate old Trek films, since it does callbacks to previous Trek movies and even TNG/DS9. It's just sloppily written and not particularly about anything other than LENS FLARE [explosion] [one-liner]
oh boy this thread is gonna derail hard now
-
i say they should do an entire trek series, in the evil universe!
-
I love the start of the movie, and the end. Space parachutes are equally cool!!
-
I enjoyed the series for what it was, and I'd love to see Abrams take another crack at it.
-
DISCLAIMER: Haven't seen the movie yet. Not really a hardcore Trek fan.
In fact, ST: Enterprise seems to be the most "modern" of Trek series (though I haven't seen it, so I don't really know), because it has much less advanced technology and has (relatively) a lot more realism than other Trek series.
And yet almost every Trekkie I know hated it. Because, you see, it's so smart to withdraw your support from a franchise that is already in a hardship. :doubt: Plus, it was chic to do so. Wouldn't want to miss the hate wagon now, would you? /rant

Now that would be AWESOME!!!

I feel like this thread started halfway through....

Enterprise might seem worth support in principle, but in practice it was just Voyager with even less charisma and even more obvious creative exhaustion. Manny Coto really started turning it around, but by then it was too late.
-
I sometimes wonder what might have been if he had been running the show from the beginning, considering just how good some of those last-season episodes were.

This post is dumb, and this line here is why.
Now maybe you're a complete cheapskate and you don't want to follow the various Relaunch novel series (I'd like to but :money:) or STO's timeline or whatever, but this is just stupid.

i dont know, voyager had some rather boring charicters, the fact they had to shove MASSIVE BORG TITS in your face to keep you interested in the characters. of course now that i think back to enterprise my favorite character was the ****ing dog. tos, tng, and ds9 all had very memorable casts.
-
I really liked the movie
I also really liked all the other movies regardless of how 2001 A Space Odyssey esque (in relation to how drawn out the scenes showcasing ships and such were) the first one was
Also, Borg Tits were pretty awesome. That suit man, that suit

This is hilarious

Manny Coto really started turning it around.
You see, I had watched many episodes from almost all of the previous Star Trek series before (not all of them, and not in chronological order though), I had read some of the novels too, and I had really enjoyed it all.
But Enterprise was different, I fell in love with that series. I watched the whole run TWICE. I spent whole nights reading... no, devouring every novel I could get ahold of. I scrutinized every Enterprise-related entry on Memory Alpha just to know every little tidbit of the damned thing. When I read there would be no more episodes from my favorite crew after season 4... damn! That was a sad day for this young man. :(
OK, I guess I've derailed this thread enough already. I'd better leave you to your talk about the movie.

Someone not understand me and take me out of context much in another topic?

wanted too or not the monster is let out its cage, time to sit back and watch the fire works, pick up the odd useful bit, and stand clear of the train wreck when it derails into the twilight zone and a mod has no choice but to lock it

Well, i didn't start this topic. So, whatever happens.

To be honest, I forgot where this originally originated

Although, honestly, I wasn't expecting a split! :P

No, it's not dumb. It's actually rather observant. For all intents and purposes, the prime timeline is dead. Any future movie or series, and thus canon, will refer to the "new" timeline. Original Trek history may get a nod or two, but we have borne witness to the end of the universe we've seen developed since the late 80's. The games and novels are all quite entertaining, but they mean exactly dick in the grand scheme of things. The core of the Trek universe has always been the television shows and the movies. I seem to remember someone posting something back in the original thread about the movie that I agreed with completely: It's an entertaining movie, in fact it's quite watchable, but it sure as **** ain't a Star Trek movie.
Just to get back to the core of what I meant when I created this little tangential thread: The designs used in Star Trek are ****. Seriously. It's like the design process consisted of someone attempting to draw TOS Star Trek ships, based solely on vague description. The Romulan mining ship in particular, it's just lazy. Lots of spikes and dark details, because they're the bad guys! Sure, it's not anything remotely like Romulan or Borg design traits, but whatevs, spikes are extreme.
Urgh. Plus, they implied pretty strongly that Scotty ****ing killed Porthos, Jonathan Archer's awesome and adorable beagle. Seriously, **** that movie.
-

Still dumb.
It's actually not. It's still moving forward. (For example, the Borg are gone.) It's simply not doing so in a medium you like, so you dismiss it. Canon from new works is, in fact, cleverly prevented from contradicted the advance of the original timeline. This isn't George Lucas going "my vision is the only one that counts, everyone else only gets to talk if I let them", no matter how much you say it is.
And the assumption that nobody will ever return to the original timeline is belied by the way of reboots. They fail. They can't avoid the past. (Seriously, rebooting Star Trek forever and ever amen is about as likely to work as rebooting the DC comics universe has the twelve times they've tried.)

Well... yeah. I want more TV shows and movies set in the prime timeline. That's not going to happen for a long time, if ever. Hence, bummed. :(
-
evil universe, it ****ing has to be in the evil universe, with evil klingons and evil humans and evil romulans and evil vulcans and facist borg and hippy cardassians and communist ferengi.
-
The designs used in Trek '09 were really lazy. I don't miss the chance of seeing more movies or shows in the old timeline, though. Years of Brannon and Braga dominion had left it littered with bad continuity and exhausted of any realistic potential to surprise or take chances.
-
Berman and Brannon Braga you mean. Although I tend to think of them as the same person too. :p
-
BERNON AND BRAGMAN
-
F*cking Bragman...
-
-
What movie are we talking about and why have i not seen it?
-
Berman and Braga are horrid excuses for human beings and should be rounded up and placed in a cage full of sadistic, autophagia-perfoming, psychopathic Californians. Who are on fire, and have an additional arm coming out of their groin.

The new Star Trek (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0796366/) reboot movie, as for why you haven't seen it, I don't know!
This thread was split from the "Get all the ships" thread where someone posted a pic of the Romulan mining vessel Narada (http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Mining_vessel) from the movie and a discussion ensued about the movie!

I'm thinking we just leave them in a disabled escape pod on the Romulan edge of the Neutral Zone, with a beacon blaring "ROMULANS SUCK" on repeat. I'm sure the Tal Shiar could get quite... creative in dealing with them.

Why are you sending them to my state? Dammit, isn't there an island somewhere?

where does the USN conduct live fire tests/practice?
If you are suggesting we fire them out of Vandenburg at Kawajelein for ABM tests, I am all for it.
