Hey guys, i am working on a destroyer but i could do with some input and constuctive crit on it. Overall i am happy with the general shape. I based the design off a early concept art for the Human cruisers in Mass Effect. I think the base hull is done, its just a case on adding detail, but i don't want to go overboard as i have to uv it and UV'ing still isn't my strongest area, I can do texturing but struggle to do good UVs. Anyway what do you guys think and do you have any suggestions for what to do with the engines at the rear, as i am a bit stuck on what to do for them?

Ok this is what i have come up for the engine section of the ship, comments please?

What kind of weapons will this warship have and will it have a hangerbay?
-
THis thing needs huge naval like triple barreled turrets :)
The engine looks sort of Homeworldish, but this is not a bad thing too^^
-
Looks good.
Not sure what you could do to improve the engine area, but firstly I would recommend not adding that much quantity of faces to the actual engine, that part will be hidden when the glow is added on FSO.
Another thing you could do is add some kind of protective plates on the lower part of the engine.
Aside from that, I guess the only thing left to do is add some detailing to the mesh.

I wasn't going to give it a hanger bay, its all guns! I had planned on giving in vertical missile tubes, like on the Daedalus from stargate, a couple of huge barreled turrets, and forward array of Mass drivers, like the Kaurna from blue planet. I was going to give it minimal fighter defense as i want this to be a capital ship hunter!

Then its not a efficient destroyer. Plus the Colossus was that exact role and yet it had a small hanger ^^

Just because it doesn't have a hanger doesn't make it inefficient. If it used the space and resources that would normally used to improve point defense, engine performance, and jump times, then it might actually be really good at its job. And the Colossus hanger was supposedly enormous. It's described as "massive" in the Colossus cutscene.
Really, the Colossus was more defensive than offensive. The Colossus had all-around turret coverage, a large fighter bay, and slow speed. It really wasn't very good at surprising enemy targets and taking them down quickly. It had to be in position after the enemy jumped in to be effective and could not take the enemy down in the time it took for the enemy's jump drives to quickly warm up and jump out. The Sathanas was much closer to an offensive weapons platform with very heavy beams concentrated exclusively on the front with negligible firepower in the other quarters. If a Sathanas jumps in next to you, you have 90 seconds at best before any large ship you send is gone.
Feel free to make anything you want, Starbug. I actually really like how the design looks so far.

My idea for why this vessel has no fighter bay and minimal anti-fighter weapons, is so that the extra space can be used, for extra munitions, power generators for engines and jump drives, So when it jumps in its got the firepower to take out a destroyer, or several corvettes in a short space of time and then jump out, also i pictured it being escorted by cruisers and corvettes or would be paired up with a carrier for a fighter screen.
I have started to UV map the main hull.
-
Yeah, it has to be escorted by something if it's going to have few anti-fighter weapons.

Now that I understand your approach I support your actions. But I still like hangers though XD.

I never said he couldn't make what he wanted ether way, my opinion never really matters here as everyone hates me ^^

Fallacy.

Your argument is unsound. Your opinion will still have an affect on a discussion, even if no one agrees with it. Also, your assumption that everyone here hates you is not true. Even if you've gotten a lot of bad responses from what you've said, the people who have said them don't necessarily hate you.
Therefore your argument is fallacious. :)
-
Maybe I'm picking on details, but, as it looks now, the centre of mass and thrust vector are far from being on the same straight line...

Ah now I understand what you ment. Thank you.

Any chance I could have a version with a hanger because this model I find rather interesting and may want it in the later future.
-
I don't think modeled hangers will add much to the model. :)
However, a version with hangar would be welcome. Perhaps a carrier variant of the ship.
-
if it doesn't have a hangar then dies it still count as a destroyer?
i know the moloch has one but that's too small.
-
In this stages, this could be used as some sort of template, for a battleship as well as a carrier.
So while sharing what you got now you could create a family with this engine set, the battleship with its huge turrets and a massdriver in the prow( why not going with a massive beam cannon instead) and the carrier has some sort of cavernous hangarbay like the Titan used in BP.
Edit: Uh, just realized this is intended to become a desty...hm...but still^^
-
Considering it's desired tasks, speed and firepower I think that it's no longer a destroyer but a battlecruiser. I just can't imagine this ship fulfilling it's duties as a convoy escort.
-
convoy escort? aside from whether or not this ship will be tied to the FS universe, using a destroyer for that role is wasteful since it's too large and precious to be given duties other than flagship roles.
for a cap-ship sized cap-ship hunter, don't we use the word "dreadnought?"
-
A tricky one...a dreadnought is certainly bigger then a destroyer I'll say...but when does it become a battleship?
The Nevada as a superdreadnought was 178 metres long, while the Yamato had an overall lenght of 263 metres...
-
Dreadnought
Noun;
"a battleship in which most of the firepower is concentrated in large guns that are of the same caliber."
"(informal) a type of warship heavier in armour or armament than a typical battleship"
i guess a seaman will say every battleship is a dreadnought inside and out.

I can imagine destroyer supporting withdrawal of the supply fleet. It doesn't mean it has to be alone on the battlefield. I'm sure, there even was a mission where Typhon relieves you from your escort assignment.

I checked it up and you're right.

Japanese dreadnought Nagato
Length: 221 m
Displacement: 42 850 t
British battlecruiser HMS Renown
Length: 242 m
Diplacement: 32 730 t
Length is not the only factor.
Could someone explain the origin of this (FS) dreadnought?
-
Origin of (FS) dreadnought is nothing at all.
People just call stuff it whenever they want to.
On a personal basis, I would think of a destroyer-sized and up dedicated ship=to-ship combatant with little to no fighter carrying capacity, in contrast to destroyers (which are hybrid warship/carriers and can lean on either side; case: Orion vs Hecate), and carriers (which have little-to-no direct ship-to-ship options).
In real-world wet navies, dreadnoughts were initially defined as line-of-battle ships with a uniform main battery. That definition kind of degraded as everything started using that. Battlecruisers are defined by being under-armored for their size and armament (something about not being able to resist their own guns), for more speed. At least in WWI, those were the going definitions. By WW2, I guess all those definitions kind of eroded (?). Though from the Nagato vs Renown thing, you can see that the Renown has significantly less displacement despite being bigger, which sounds like its underarmored to me.

Have fun when it comes to defining battleships
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Power_Treaty#Effects

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pre-dreadnought_battleship

To make things more interesting Countries like Japan and the Yamato (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreadnought) exceeded the legal maximums of the treaties.

ok i have the UV of the main hull done and have mocked up some test textures
[attachment deleted by a ninja]

These are many dockpoints o.O
-
There ment to be missile tubes, but as i said they are temp textures, i actually used Beam4 from the sparky vp for those.
-
Ok heres what i have done with the Textures, still a lot to do, but i am pretty happy with it, as i am more used to texturing organic models.

Freespace very obviously doesn't use the same system of categorisation in english as a 20th century navy. Don't worry about it.
Anyway in FS all destroyers have fighterbays, massive size/armour and in the FS2 era have heavy anti capital weapons. So if your ship doesn't have those it might not be a destroyer.
-
@starbug Is it possible for you to post a few shots from different angles, so we could fully appreciate your work? It looks really interesting.

Indeed, considering the fact that cruiser is typically bigger than destroyer and in FS it's smaller than corvette.
-
Sure, but FS cruisers are larger or on par with nowaday's cruisers...
-
Fenrises are nearly the size of Yamatos. yet i can't figure out why torpedo runs against it feel like sinking a pointless obstacle instead of an important battleship. the sizes in game don't feel right somehow.
that destroyer is looking better everyday. there's more done than what i could do in one week.
-
It's less about the size and more about their wimpyness. In WCS, destroyers are about the size of FS cruisers, but are much more imposing, because they're actually a threat.
-
Still feels like that thing needs a good AO bake and maybe some smoothing tweaking.
-

Yeah, definitely this. Slap some better AI on the cruiser and expand its capabilities and suddenly they feel much more real.

Dude, it's a Fenris. It isn't an important battleship, it's a museum piece. Save your bombs for a Leviathan or Lilith or something that wasn't outdated before the Great War.
Speaking of cruisers, I feel like this model would make a better attack cruiser than a destroyer. Slap some AAAs on the sides, jump it into the middle of a fighter squadron or supply depot and enjoy the carnage.

FS has some funky FoV by default. Given that, it's pretty normal that sizes don't feel right ingame.
In any case, just take the Aeolus, which is smaller than the Fenris, and see if it doesn't give you enough of a pause in bomber runs :p
-
actually i do kind of find mentus imposing. :P
-
Ok i this is what i have got done with the texturing sofar. I must admit i am quite happy with it. What i plan to do is do another variant and remove the front section and turn that part into a hanger so there is a carrier version as well, but will have less caphip weapons.

Not bad, not bad at all.
Looking forward to the rest
