ok so I had this crazy idea this evening, that what would happen if 2 mysterious factionw appeared out of nowwhere at the hind end of 1942 and declared earth a temporary neutral research planet, gave both the aaxis and the allies advanced space tech, carved out the solar system between them and gave them 6 months to intergrate this tech into their fighters and other aircraft, and some seacraft. and then the battle for the solar system begins. so I decided to feed this fanasty of mine as a pet project. I am currently letting fallout10mm put together a basic shipset for me, and then I will start putting together WW2 aircraft that have been updated and modified with advanced tech and engines. there will be plenty of favs, and quite a few that never got to see the skies, like the german jet flying wing, and the XP-67 moonbat. hope to have some of my first concepts up soon, and if other modelers want to chip in after I set a style standard, I would be glad if you did, and hopefully we can get an interesting mini-mod out of this idea of mine

yes the grumman flying wing is a possible option, but first I would like to announce the first 2 aircraft I hope to attempt at tomoorow to start attempting a standard, though these arent nesseceraliy what you could call 'normal' conversions.

yes I know both were prototypes that never saw full service, however they are perfect for the mod

so fallout is still working on the main unit list but to sait your curioustity here is a little info: each faction will have at least one carrier type, wheter it be converted ship or other vehicle types, like an asteroid base, but the plan is to have the Germans have giant space dirigibles.

Reminds me a little of the Dawn of Victory mod for Sins (which was inspired by Harry Turtledove's work). :)

thanks for the links, but the plan is to use assets made specificly for the mod wheter by team members or freelancers. also your links are some food for thought, but we are currently sticking only with aircraft that had at least 1 prototype made, and we already have plenty to make, hopefully we will have a basic shipset up this weekend. and I may try at a production prop conversion, like perhaps the P-38, or the thunderbolt/jug

thanks for putting that together fallout, good job. ok so first off, to you freelancers out there, most of these are open to you guys, as there is plenty to make, however first I would like to make something of a baseline, but how that will turn out is another matter. also, many of the heavy bombers listed like the B-17, the avro lancaster, and B-24, will be in fact acting more like corvettes in starwars, essentialy more of a light capital ship than true bomber, as there will be only a handful of large targets, and the closest to a land target you will proably get are asteroid bases.
ok so for the handful of capital ship types there will be, there will proably be a couple of converted battleships, subs, and dirigibles. now each faction has at least one type of carrier, so here is the rudimentry listing
Allies: US: aircraft carrier, navy blimp; British: aircraft carrier; Russian: TBD, possibly a comet, or moving asteroid base
Axis: Germany: mega-dirigibles; Japan: aircraft carrier, super-sub with small complement;
Italy: dont know what they actualy have
(also note actual ships and classes will be reseached at a later date)
(also note, as of now fighters/bombers and a carrier for each faction are priotity, other ships will be determined later)
now one more note, is what I currently have as the solar system assignments(note, if someone wants to actualy make a map with this stuff on it feel free)
US: Mars and its moons(note one has been turned into a formidable starbase, known as wake island, the other is Pearl harbor), venus
Britan: saturn
Russia: Pluto and its moons
Germany: Nazia(neptune), THE moon
german occupied countries: jupiter's moons
Italy: Uranus
Japan: mercury,
Japan-occupied pacific: asteroid belt(note, several dozen different asteroid bases have been established amoung the belt and is a formidable obstacle)
France(occupied, own forces have been destroyed by this moment): Jupiter
note: earth is a off-limits production planet, as stated by the mysterious forces that have brought the hyperdrive, however the final battle WILL take place between it and the moon

ok thought I would say that I am beginning several models right now. also, as of now the current plan has 2 main transports one for Allies, one for the axis, more may be added later: Axis: condor(some versions may be armed) Allies: DC-3/C-47 (unarmed).
also the PBY-catalina will be added, it will have an interested role, as it acts as a patrol plane, rescue plane, and cargo raider. so expect having to fly a couple of rescue missions with it.
and a final note in relatian to the HO-19 Amerika bomber. I plan to make it a massive Assault frigate, bigger than the mega-dirigibles, carrying a dozen plus fighters, and heavily armed towards base assualt. If you see one of these coming expect a huge battle, unless you want to lose you base.

The Ho-19(modification of the Ho-18) was a never flown plane in combat,was tested as the Go-229(Ho-IX).....but fast near 1000 km/h in sea height(15m).
What bombs and missiles are planned to use?

first off, the HO-19 is a huge 6 engined bomber, the GO-229(HO-9) was a 2 engined fighter. the HO-19 I am using because it gives me a good giant assualt ship that would make a cool type of 'boss' challenge
as for weapondry, there will be non-guided missiles, types are YTB. similar with bombs. only thing for sure is the V-2, but that can technicly be classified as a ship unto itself

Read the whole thing from start to finish. Honestly I think we could have kicked their asses harder than Turtledove allowed did in the books.

World War, with the sequel series Colonization, ending with the single novel Homeward Bound (which I haven't been able to find at the bookstore :blah:).

To be perfectly honest, this scenario does not impress me much. The reason for this is that it's just an excuse for SPACE NAZIS OMG LOL, without going in-depth about the huge change you've inflicted on the people in the setting.
To be clear here, this is not a criticism of the basic idea (Criticizing it would be somewhat hypocritical, given that I had a pretty similar idea some time ago (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=72062.0), just an expression of my personal worldbuilding sensibilities (As in, I really do not care for Nazis at all. In Free Skies, my role for Hitler is to be the proprietor of a gay bar in Hamburg or something like that).

well, thats a good point, however, what I do want to say is that the point is mine is a parrellel timeline, however most of the storyline of the war is the same, however 2 things have been changed: the aerial battlefield is now space and there is advanced engine/life support tech; 2) the germans have accelerated thier planning timeline due to the advanced engines. so yes it is space nazis, however that is not the focus, the focus is taking the best, coolest, most iconic aircraft(P-51, p-38, Me-262, B-17), and beefing them up, and bringing some of the wackiest concepts(the flying flapjack, the moonbat, the FR fireball, the HO-229, the super lorian, the amerika bomber I-250 and several others) and bringing back to life in a way not done before. the motivations are the same, the tech and location have just been altered, and advanced, to give us a new more interesting perspective on it. well all that, and I have never been able to mod flight sims to save my life, and space aircraft carrier dirigibles would be extremely cool

See, I get that desire, which was why I came up with Free Skies. I just don't think that space, or Nazis, are necessary in that picture :P

Mando and E, if you guys would both be interested, I think the two of you could really make a go for it on Free Skies.
The E, Mando has tremendous enthusiasm bordering on compulsion for 3D modelling. If you would be willing to adapt the project's art style to accommodate his relative lack of texturing ability, he could probably build up entire fleets of planes and ships. It seems to me like Free Skies stalled out for a lack of models more than anything, so there you go.
Mando, directing your efforts toward Free Skies would mean dropping the whole Nazis-in-space angle (which I should point out was recently done in a comedy movie anyway), but in exchange you would be getting a well fleshed-out world full of planes and airships with great references for you to model (I know how you love your references). You would also dramatically improve your chances of actually getting something released, as The E is an experienced FSO modder and coder with a wide variety of talents who knows what it takes to launch a successful mod.
Anyway, sorry to play matchmaker in your thread, I just can't resist getting psyched up for air pirates in FSO :)

I personally love the idea swash, though what I would like to say though, is that I would like to include several of the more radical designs and concepts that were never put into full production or even prototyped. I am willing to make compromises, and I do hope to still have the oppurtunity to do some classics as well(say a modified P-38, or the ME-262). I know a couple that would proably fit into your mod style well thta I had hoped to do(HO-229, XB-67 Moonbat, FR fireball, Super Lorian, XP-79 flying ram, flying flapjack, and others). also, I am willing to work with whatever you give me, just remember, the more I get the more precise I get. also I kinda would like a synopis of the storyline you have going, but we can discuss this later. personaly I considered this mod as a chance to recreate some of the best, and wackiest planes of the war, and I think I could do it through your mod, while getting more of the advice and experience I need to hone my modding skills. well tell me what you think The_E?

Well, aren't your ideas both similar enough to benefit from a good portion of the modding effort? You could make a resource pack, and make two nice campaigns out of it, if you guys help each other out.

Mando: Free Skies is supposed to be (at least in part) a spiritual ... neighbor? Successor seems wrong :P to Crimson Skies; the setting is designed to create an environment in which weird dieselpunk science can exist.
