Title: Borderlands 2 Up For Pre-Order On Steam
Post by: SpardaSon21 on July 26, 2012, 01:37:40 pm
I know there's a few HLP-ers who play the original.  Is anyone else up for more shooting and looting?

Oh, and according to Steam if you own the original you get 10% off Borderlands 2 this weekend, plus the usual pre-order goodies.

After the sale, I'll be surprised if anyone has any spare cash left to pre-order new stuff. :p

It was worth a shot, I suppose.  Someone else must have not spent all their money thanks to previous Steam sales.

Oh, I'm sure someone out there would be interested.  I don't have the original Borderlands myself, though I have heard it's a lot of fun.

Single player is okay, but it really gets fun when you and a friend or three get together to kill your way through an entire planet's worth of monsters, bandits, and evil mercenary thugs.

The pacing is also different depending on how many players you are playing with.  By yourself, the pacing is somewhat slow - which some older gamers might actually prefer.  With four players, the game pace becomes quite fast indeed.

Also, most of the DLC for the original game was actually quite good and worth the price of admission.

I'll see if I can latch myself on a 4 pack for discount this weekend but I'm in regardless...

ps. also dl'ing the original again ... anyone up for game (or just for look on the free weekend), just call via Steam...

Still holding out for Enemy Unknown, assuming I don't preorder from elsewhere.

I'll be around today, a little bit of tomorrow, and this weekend, but I'm not sure I'll be able to play much since I've had Borderlands crash on me a lot with VC C++ issues.

EDIT: Quick Google search revealed my problem.  Should be an easy fix.  I'll have to start over with new characters, though.  Oh well. :P

How many folks here will get this game?

I don't have the original Borderlands so I don't really know much of this game, but apparently people are psyched about it. I've already bought GW2 and will buy XCOM Enemy Unknown, so I don't know if I should get this one too or skip it.

Already pre-ordered. Borderlands, for whatever nebulous reason, is one of my favorite games of the past few years. Probably because I have a soft spot for any kind of media willing to take the piss out of itself.

Story? Flimsy.
Characters? Ridiculous.
Dialogue? Comedy.
Guns? My god, it's full of stars guns.

Since we're a little over a week from release, I figured I would revive this thread a little.  Who has pre-ordered or plans to buy this game, and what is your Steam name?  I think BL2 is one of those releases that uses Steam for DRM, so you're stuck with Steam if you buy this game.

I already pre-purchased on Steam, and you can find me on there as SpardaSon21.

Steam name is 0rph3u5 or [Dolt] 0rph3u5 (depending if the Relicnews Dolts are gathering for Borderlands 2 as well) and I can be found via the HLP Steam Group

Heh, I Dolted around a bit for Space Marine, but I probably won't be Dolting for BL2 since there's already a lot of people here on HLP who will be playing BL2.

but you aren't forced to use a third party to play your game, so it's still a net positive.

Yeah, Borderlands 2 is one of those games.  Gearbox ditched GameSpy in favor of Steamworks for this installment.

Unless legislation is different where you live, the requirment of Steam, Origin or any other thrid party software as well as the requirement to register online before playing has to be there noted on box, visable before purchase ... (In Germany it has to be noted on box and is often as well as a seperate entry in the system requirments) - otherwise you can claim false advertisment or something similar for a full refund at your retailer ...
Title: Re: Borderlands 2 Up For Pre-Order On Steam

In America the System Requirements section of the retail box pretty much always lists an online connection requirement or third-party account requirement such as Steam.  But of course, who bothers to actually read something like the system requirements of a game these days? :P
Title: Re: Borderlands 2 Up For Pre-Order On Steam

Title: Re: Borderlands 2 Up For Pre-Order On Steam
Post by: SpardaSon21 on September 10, 2012, 03:04:39 pm
Everyone should be checking system requirements before they purchase a game.  I know I do.  If some console peasant or (insert PC-related idiot here) doesn't bother to read the box to see if their PC can run it or if the game requires anything extra, they deserve to be stuck with their purchase.  At that point you're an uninformed buyer and you get what you deserve.

i think any game that requires third party applications to be installed should have to disclose this prevalently on the package, like that "games for windows" ribbon across the top of the ones that use microsoft's (dumb) system.  i'm sure the steam thing is somewhere on the box in the legalese, but i still call that deliberately deceptive.

Of all the things to proudly advertise on the cover of your game Games 4 Windows Live is not one of them.  Having a Steamworks logo on the cover would probably be much more effective at sales since Steamworks is actually pretty awesome if you don't mind using Steam.

Ooookaaaay

The game finally unlocked on Friday. And now I am kinda thankful that it did, seeing how it swallowed me whole over the weekend. So here's my Review.

1. The good:

-The Story. Not only is there one, in sharp contrast to the first Borderlands, it is also very well written. Handsome Jack is a great antagonist, starting off as a real dick who keeps calling you to either tell you how awesome he is, or how bad you are at your job. As the story progresses, there are moments where his facade slips and he goes from dickishness to real villainhood, which serve to give him an actual arc.
The player characters from the first Borderlands make a reappearance as NPCs, each of them is given a good intro, and some (all? don't know, haven't played through yet) even have genuinely touching moments.

-The Graphics

The original Borderlands wasn't supposed to be cell-shaded, it was only after a last minute art style change that we got the game we eventually arrived at, and when comparing BL1 and BL2, this becomes rather apparent. BL2's art is gorgeous (At least on a PC with texture details cranked to max), there are awesome sights in every region you get to visit, and the effects work is equally good. The godray effect seen in the latest Unreal3 games (ME3, Batman: Arkham City) is present, here enhanced with some subtle colouring hints.
On the subject of art style, the guns also got a desperately needed upgrade. There's greater graphical variety between the various brands, and most of them actually look and feel unique rather than reskins of the same model with some under-the-hood stat changes.

-The Gameplay

It's like the first Borderlands, only more so. As stated above, the guns now look more varied, and the associated gameplay is more varied too; but not only did the guns get an upgrade, the rest of the inventory did as well. Grenades can now combine several effects, instead of being limited to a deployment mode + effect combo; I am currently running around with 'nades that give all victims a slag effect (weakening their defense for a time) and a health-leech effect, which is nice.
There are two models of cars now, the light runner from the first one, and a Bandit 4-seater. Nothing much to say there, really.
The first Borderlands used a stat tracking mechanism whereby completing certain goals would give you an XP boost, Gearbox wisely reinvented this and turned it into so-called Badass points, which unlock tokens that can be redeemed for some stat boosts (Not very big ones, I hasten to add) that carry over to all characters you play, which is a nice refinement of the Achievement system seen in modern games.

-The Sound

It's good. Sound design is nice, music serves the story. Nothing really outstanding here.

2. The bad

-Difficulty curve
Much like the first game, you level pretty fast in this one too. Unfortunately, this means that sooner or later, you're stuck with your quest log filled with tasks that are of trivial difficulty; I really wished they'd have implemented a level scaling system here so that quests retain the same level of challenge regardless of how high-level you are.

....

I think that's it, really. Maybe I'll have more to add later.
Title: Re: Borderlands 2 Up For Pre-Order On Steam
Post by: TwentyPercentCooler on September 24, 2012, 08:59:06 am
I haven't played through more than the first few hours or so, owing to the fact that I've been playing Torchlight 2 co-op too much, but first impressions have been good.

I love the varied environments especially. The first game was brown wasteland, brown mineshafts, brown wasteland, brown cave, more brown wasteland...the only color was the bandits when they lit up with elemental effects.  ;7

Now, I'm able to light up bandits in even more satisfying ways. I have to say, the new Siren's action skill isn't nearly as good as Phasewalk, but eh. I also really miss the daze effect, and the Phoenix skill. But, I like the upgrades to Eridian tech weapons. They were pitiful in the first game. Now, they're pretty sweet, if a little tough on ammo. I've got a slag splatgun (E-tech shotgun) that's great for applying slag to lots of enemies, which I then set on fire with my action skill, corrode with a corrosive gas grenade, and then explode into gibs with an explosive pistol. Oh and I have a shock SMG for those stubborn buggers with shields.

There isn't a status effect in the game that I can't easily apply. It's why I play Siren, and did in the first game. Versatility! I can't really comment on the other classes much. The items are definitely better overall. Shields have more interesting and varied effects, the number of guns is even more ridiculous (forget "Up To Eleven," this is to the eleventh power), and some of the grenades have been fun to throw. I don't really much like the new class mods, but maybe they get better later on.

I had a Maliwan Hellfire SMG and a Defiler revolver. Phasewalk was the least overpowered part of being me. :P

Note: both legitimately obtained. I got the Hellfire at level 11; I actually had no idea how stupid powerful it was until I'd tried to play another class.

If there was one thing...just ONE THING that didn't need to be turned up to 11 in this game, it was the annoyingness of Claptrap. I seriously hope there's a quest later on where I get to fire it into the sun. Is it wrong that I would stop fighting Handsome Jack if he would just let me become a Claptrap-exterminator instead of a Vault Hunter?

I'm a little jelly of your weapons. The slot machine hasn't given me anything useful and only enough back to recover about 2/3rds what I put into it.

Course, my two characters on this playthrough (they did a thing to fix the golden guns for premier, so I restarted) are lvls 8 and 13 respectively, so...

Rocket launchers do that too
It's ****ing awesome

(Shotgun also keeps shooting if it's got ammo in it)

Also, a Mirv grenade that spawns Mirv grenades? That's just too much awesome Orpheus

I'm suddenly picturing this scene from Venture Brothers, where a random henchman runs out of ammo and then tries throwing his normal pistol at the guy he's shooting at. :D

I liked the scene in the opening of Casino Royale, where the bad guy runs out of ammo and throws his pistol at Bond, who grabs it out of the air and throws it back at him, nailing him in the head. :p

I'm finding that BL2 has me enjoying a greater variety of gun manufacturers.  In the original I just used Maliwan.  Every time.  Volcano Sniper?  Combustion Hellfire SMG?  Pestilent Defiler?  **** yeah, those were the only guns I ever needed.  And the occasional explosive bouncing betty grenade, for when you absolutely positively have to kill every mother****er in the room.

In Borderlands 2 my choices are more varied.  For snipers I am still loyal to Maliwan.  Sometimes you just gotta light that ***** on fire (or lightning, or paint them with acid, or slag, or just blast him into little bits which rain from the sky for hours), and sometimes you have to do it from a mile away.  For Rocket Launchers I'm down with Tediore.  Why?  Because when when I'm using a rocket launcher the last thing I want to waste my time doing is reloading.  With Tediore, there's no such thing.  Gotta reload?  NO PROBLEM.  Just throw the rocket launcher, watch it sprout fins, and WHOOSH, off it goes.

Shotguns?  I like my shotguns with a BOOM.  Need a bigger boom?  Gotta go with TORGUE.

Torgue guns are about EXPLOSIONS and MACHISMO and ENGINES and EXPLOSIONS and LOUD NOISES and EXPLOSIONS. You know what sucks? SUBTLETY. You know what’s awesome? NOTSUBTLETY. And also EXPLOSIONS. Every single shot fired from a Torgue gun EXPLODES.

And then there's the revolvers.  Ahhh, revolvers. :)  For them I've fallen in love with Jakobs, because there's just something inherently satisfying about pulling the trigger and hearing a big THWACK, the gun kicks back in your hand, and whatever was on the receiving end no longer has a head.  Or, to quote the wiki,

Quote
The Jakobs corporation has held to certain values through the years. Family. Honor. Always aiming for the head. When you need to kill your enemies with a single shot, you buy Jakobs: the corporation’s founder, Montgomery Jakobs, always believed in damage above all else. Accuracy? Pah. Recoil reduction? Don’t make me laugh. Elemental effects? Just a bunch of silly fireworks and nonsense. No, the Jakobs corporation believes that there’s nothing better in the world than a big-ass bullet that can tear a man’s head clean off.

I found this in as a random drop when playing with Ravenholme, Dave, and a Mericet guy. I think it's ETEC.

THEY ARE THE MOST JEALOUS.

It isn't ETEC. All E-Tec guns have that bright purple rarity colour.

I think I'm going to have to take pictures of MY loot
No gold weapons, but a Slag Sniper Rifle that deals 15k damage?
Too bad it's Hyperion

I haven't had a chance to play yet, but I need to dig up a screenshot of my Hunter's inventory from the first game.  I had every pistol and sniper rifle ultra rare in dark orange.  I could solo Crawmerax with the lectric sniper rifle, which is how I got them in the first place.

Looking forward to getting going in this.
