Which game do you think is the best competitive eSports game? I'm leaning towards StarCraft.

freespace 2

it does, you might've missed the trick to getting in though (the trick is: playing freespace 2)

World of Tanks?

I wish it had better multiplayer.

FS2 doesn't have an eSport community, just a (crappy) multiplayer mode. We're talking professional competitions you can win actual money in, like you get with StarCraft and the like.

I'm sure we could put together an eSports multiplayer mod and maybe start up a pro community of our own?
-
I'm afraid this community is too small for that, not to mention we would probably run into legal issues at some point if we did start to hand out monetary prizes (we're not the original devs, nor do we have an official permission from them). Besides, I'm afraid FS multiplayer is too finicky for that, I've tried setting it up, and couldn't manage to get it to connect.

FSO netcode is very nineties and shoddy from what I've heard, which means death in a game where combat takes place entirely with relatively slow-moving projectiles.

Define 'best.'
Biggest userbase? Established ladder system? Player experience? Complexity? etc etc etc
In terms of size and dedication of the userbase in actual competition, I doubt there's anything that can even touch StarCraft.
-
Starcraft wins (I'm not really a fan but whatever, nothing is even close to SC, only thing that ever got close was CS, LoL is trying hard these days but frankly isn't ubiquitous enough).
As for FreeSpace - I've played a lot of multiplayer games and there was never a game where skill set you apart from your peers so dramatically (next closest that I played is probably Tribes).
If you were even fractionally better than your opponent you were virtually untouchable. If it could've been an esport, and hadn't been so niche it would've been king, especially considering how tactical multiple opponents vs could get.
SquadWars was an excellent example of early 'esports' before it evolved into what it is now.

Nowadays I wouldn't be so sure, League of Legends has a really huge userbase, and is (hour count) the most played video game in the world.

Speaking of Esports, me and my team have made it to the finals of the Bronze League (http://worldoftanks.com/en/news/eSports/wglna-bronze-finals-march-3/) for World of Tanks. It will be live steamed with a 10 minute delay later today. The award isn't cash, but we are moving up to silver league next season. (Gold league is where you get cash payouts) I'am on the team "I Love Lamp".

I'm missing GTL, Rfactor, Trackmania, iRacing and the like in here. They might not be as well publicized, but there's quite a bit of competition in there, esp. in the case of iRacing (where you can earn money).

I think the point is that Nakura, unlike most (every other?) member of HLP, apperently has not played FS2 yet (whilst I am sure he will actually love it, as FS2 has some interesting political undertones).

I'd have to say right now for me it's WoT as well, been sinking a lot of hours on it and this little bugger is one hell of a competition parade.
I even got two work mates to join me and do some fun runs on low tiers every now and then. Good times.
-
Purely as a spectator sport, I find WoT is one of the most boring things to watch ever.
I do however, enjoy SC2 on a regular basis. Somebody nerf koreans, because they are too damn good at the game.

I've never actually *watched* any sort of e-sport, besides a Starcraft 2 match in the background of a TotalBiscuit rant. I'll be lurking a bit I suppose, maybe pick up some tactics.
Although, now that I think of it, there's a Minecraft mod called "Hungercraft" that was played competitively with commentators and stuff on Twitch, does that count?
-
DOTA2 seems to be the huge thing at the moment, what with The International and all, but even beyond not caring for playing that style of game, I can't see what makes people drool over it as a spectator sport. I watched a bit of one or two matches, and the commentators were going ape**** over someone using one power at a certain point, and it felt like I'd need to know a hell of a lot about the game to even care about what was going on. At least with StarCraft, you can see a Zergling rush wipe out a bunch of enemy units and know that **** just went down.
(Honestly though I have little to no interest in "eSports" in general.)

StarCraft eSports master race:
-
StarCraft, namely because for one nation? It's their Nascar+NFL+WWF/E.
Sure, LoL can spectacle just as much and has large crowds at events here in NA, but it's still young compared to the rolling Juggernaut that really kicked off eSports -and still holds it-.
Other competitive games would be Quake (for FPS genre), it still holds titled tournaments to this day. May not be as large as the current gen shooters, but it's been unflaggingly consistent in its presence.
Not sure about stick-fighter based, but I'm pretty sure there is and has been a persistent penetration there and the more favored franchise seems to be Street Fighter.
I used to be a part of the Need For Speed franchise racing during eSports 1.0 (early/mid 90's) along with Descent ladder matches.
-
Which ones in particular? I am a huge fan of the second and third installments.
-
Meh..
The only MP games I play are Planetside 2, World of Tanks, Attack on Titan and Allegiance...also played War of the Roses and various Battlefield and counter-Strike for a while.
So "e-sports" really don't interest me much. Them koreans be crazy.
-
For the record, I'm the guy who voted for Smash. :nervous:
As an aside, there was an MLG-sponsored Smash Bros. tournament hosted by my student organization a couple of weeks ago.
e: I took "best" to mean "my favorite".

Nah, because it's the most fun to play and watch, imho. Plus it's the most widespread eSport and the most balanced (well, SC1 is anyway).

I used to get plenty of enjoyment from watching people duke it out in Warcraft 3. Also, with Warcraft 3 there are so many weird and wonderful custom maps outside the core competitive experience, that once in a blue moon you can get the enjoyment of watching one.
Now though I don't get much enjoyment out of it. I think it's because everyone who's still left's playstyle has gotten so refined. Everyone does the same things, everyone knows what works and what doesn't.
Anyway, Warcraft 3 is my pick.
