Title: FreeSpace The Series
Post by: NJSP 3002 on June 10, 2015, 11:20:17 pm
This is season 1 of the series that I'm making, starting it out of course with The Great War let me know what y'all think and what other campaigns you like to see in the series!

Other than the canon campaigns:

Destiny Of Peace
Derelict

There's lots more but I don't want to overload you right now.

No please do if you can try to give them in order so it can go with the story. Thanks.

Do FS1, Silent Threat Reborn, FS2. There's no real order or continuity between post-Capella campaigns.

Here are some of my faves then that'd I'd like to see (I put the two I'd previously requested in here also):

Shrouding The Light
Destiny Of Peace
Warzone
Derelict

ST pretty much follows on from FS1, Op Templar is a little while after that by my understanding

You're welcome.

For your information, Shrouding The Light takes place from about the time Vasuda Prime gets destroyed to a little after FS1.  Destiny Of Peace takes place about a little over six months after the end of FS1.

Warzone and Derelict are both post-Capella campaigns.

If I had to pick one, I'd say Destiny Of Peace was my favorite campaign.

If you're offering, I'd like to see someone put the new Wings of Dawn on Youtube. It's short with only one episode released.

If you want to do a long campaign, I'd like to see Incursion and Return to Sol get some Youtube love. :)

http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=86506.msg1728081

(Return to Sol is a sequel to Incursion.) They're pretty old and showing their age now compared to the newer polished campaigns, but still a lot of fun to play imo.

You should seriously consider sticking to voice acted campaigns if you're doing a TV show format.

And we're talking about a lot of content here, Derelict alone is like 50? missions. That's crazy. I'm not watching all that!

Just play and upload whatever you want. Though personally I think it would be nice to upload things that aren't already on Youtube. I've watched all this guy's Freespace playlists for instance, and he already has a Derelict playthrough:

Good ****.

Have you considered doing Just Another Day 2.22+ or Wings of Dawn 2015? Those are very interesting campaigns with a lot of visually impressive and mechanically interesting stuff happening.

They're also not connected to the FS2 story, so you can do them whenever you please!

e: they aren't voiced but at least in JAD's case I'm sure Text To Speech would only make it better.

There are tons of good campaigns out there.

I think i would like to see another Dimensional Eclipse and Ancient-Shivan War Playthrough, because i love these playthroughs by Novachen (http://www.dailymotion.com/novachen) because she is playing them on Insane... a difficulty i would never survive one mission ^^.

You have supplied a full URL. The tag is not supposed to work with that.

For some reason, it worked on the first video, which used a youtu.be URL. I do not know why that worked.
Title: Re: FreeSpace The Series
Post by: ngld on July 11, 2015, 05:53:09 am
It worked for the first video because YouTube, for some weird reason, supports URLs like http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/http://youtu.be/6yCVyyBpGGQ?list=PLfe6sGtHQk1aJUdsh7zGzgeHFjH4A-HmW but not  http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/http://youtube.com/watch?v=6yCVyyBpGGQ.
Hell, even this link works: http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/http://youtube.com/something/whatever/6yCVyyBpGGQ?list=PLfe6sGtHQk1aJUdsh7zGzgeHFjH4A-HmW

As long as you don't include a ?, # or ; and have a slash in front of the video ID, it works. YT doesn't care what else you write in front of the ID.

I also strongly recommend doing Age of Aquarius first, and also maybe holding off for a while longer until the next release (we don't know when it's coming, but it'll have voice acting for acts 1&2 and some other changes).

If you want to do a series with an internally consistent timeline, then you should do FS1 -> Silent Threat: Reborn -> Shrouding the Light -> Shrouding the Light: Origins -> Operation Templar -> FS2.  Other campaigns, such as Awakenings and Destiny of Peace -- as good as they are -- are not compatible due to plot, story, and date contradictions.

All of these are included in the FSO Installer, which I recommend using instead of hunting the forum for download links.  (Operation Templar is included in the standard FSPort download, so it does not need to be downloaded separately.)

You can search the FSPort forum for threads with RELEASE in the subject.  There are quite a few good campaigns there.  (I wonder if I should sticky them all?)  Here (http://fsport.freespacemods.net/releases/fsport-destinyofpeace-voice.zip) is the Destiny of Peace voice acting pack.  And of course, you can use the FSO Installer as mentioned above.

Minor point Goober, if you want your list to be chronologically correct, Origins takes place before the main STL campaign.

As for NJSP, the FSO installer might be the easiest place to get the campaign "Destiny Of Peace" and its voice acting in one place.  I'm not sure what version it uses though, so check the mod file to see if it's using the 2014 Media VPs.

Chronologically, yes, but I suggested that order because some of the references in STL:O are better appreciated by playing STL first.  (Of course, the same can be said for playing FS2 before ST:R, but that shouldn't prevent people from going FS1 -> ST:R -> FS2.  I suppose it comes down to personal preference.)

1) You're using FSPort 3.3.  Version 3.5 (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=89121.0) is available.

2) You don't have fsport-mediavps on your mod commandline.  Try
Code: [Select]
-mod fsport-mediavps,STL,fsport,mediavps_3612
3) Based on your log file, you have a bad version of MV_RadarIcons.vp.  Try redownloading it manually (http://mvp.fsmods.net/3612/MV_RadarIcons_3612.zip).

You have STL listed twice. That... probably isn't a good idea, but I don't know if it'll actually cause problems.

You also halted execution on the first warning, instead of hitting "no" to continue so we get them all in the log. However, the one warning recorded is a problem with unescaped quotation marks in the middle of a weapon description; it means the string won't be easily-translated, and half of that weapon description won't show up in-game, but neither of those are a big deal for recording gameplay footage.

If you want try I found upgraded STL which should (hopefully) work with fsport 3.5 and mediavps_2014.
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=87553.0
It requires changes in mod.ini in STL:
Code: [Select]
secondarylist = fsport-mediavps_2014,fsport,MediaVPs_2014;
I tried it and it doesn't show warnings.

Since this season is coming to a end let me know what you think should be played for Season 3.

For your post-FS2, campaign run-throughs, while BP stuff is a virtual certainty, since BP stuff isn't completely voice acted but will be sometime down the line, may I suggest that you consider doing the Cold Element campaigns first.  Obviously, BWO isn't available to play but giving attention to the CE line might give them enough attention and support to finish it.

I will most diffidently take that into consideration and will look into thanks for your idea. Also If there's demo you want to see played shoot some links it doesn't have to do with the series it would be just for y'all to take a look at.

Don't wait on full voice acting for BP, that is years away. The first campaign is fully voiced and the second should be within a few months!

Another pre-FS2 campaign you may want to consider is "Homesick".  It's not voice acted, but its quite well done.
Edit:

I haven't followed any of these links, but here's the Wiki list for the COLD ELEMENT (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Cold_Element) campaigns.

Here's the similar link for HOMESICK (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Homesick).

It's been some time since I played any STL, but IIRC the Lucifer mission was part of STL:Origins.  Will you be including Origins as part of Season 3?

Your call, but if you want to play them chronologically, STL Origins comes before the main STL campaign.

Hm...If you plan on doing various campaigns you're gonna have your hands full. For starters, there's plenty of campaigns to go around.
Another problem is that chronologicaly, they are all over the place.
But if you want to go that route, go ahead. Might be interesting.

FYI - Flames of War takes place during the second shivan war, while the second part is 25 years after Capella

thanks ill look into Flames of War.

Yea what im trying to build myself is a time line with the links of the campaigns so i can keep track and prepare for the series if any of all possible, just really don't have the time.

Someone build me a timeline lmao   :D

I already did. :p

You can also add Echo Gate between ST:R and STL; Echo Gate actually takes place simultaneously with ST:R's first act.  That's the longest timeline where everything is self-consistent.  (Of course, if you want to go in strict chronological order you should do STL:O before STL, as CT27 pointed out.)

The second-longest self-consistent timeline is Cold Element, which goes FS1 -> Aftermath -> FS2 -> Derelict -> Warzone -> Twilight.  (BWO would come next if the team ever gets around to releasing it.)

If you want to play campaigns in chronological order, fyi (even though it doesn't take place in the official timeline) "Destiny Of Peace" takes place in October 2335.

Very well done - your dogfighting skills are impressive. Not only does it keep you alive, it keeps the videos interesting/entertaining.

Suggestion - maybe turn your effects and music levels down to 50% while recording so voice parts aren't drowned out by the action. While it's fun to hear all of the explosions and such, if you can't hear the dialogue, it detracts from the story.

Just a comment to your combat style:  I've noticed that you don't equalize or reinforce shields much.  It looks to be costing you in hull damage as attacks on you from a single vector is punching through your shields.

So, I thought I'd replay Shrouding The Light, but I was pretty sure the last time I played it, there was no reading accompaniment for the Vasudan voices, only the Vasudan test voice playing in the background during messages.  So I've downloaded the newest release, but when I fired it up I got only default models.  I then compared the mod file to the one used by ST-Reborn and copied those dependencies, to try and get it to use the newest models and effects.  Unfortunately, I was greeted by a messages telling me that there were 18 warnings during the mod startup alone.  I've tried debug builds, but these crash before giving me any warnings.  Did you have to overcome similar problems when you set it for your previous playthrough?  Can you provide me with a solution?

If you want try I found upgraded STL which should (hopefully) work with fsport 3.5 and mediavps_2014.
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=87553.0
It requires changes in mod.ini in STL:
Code: [Select]
secondarylist = fsport-mediavps_2014,fsport,MediaVPs_2014;
I tried it and it doesn't show warnings.
Did you get STL from link in quote?

You'll find the log for the STL crash in THIS (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=91906.0) thread.

This may be a long shot, but if these two crashes are related, its possible that they stem from some issue with the Osiris bomber.  There were Osiris present in the STR mission "Chasing Shadows", in the STL mission "Intruders" I and my wingmen were flying them, and a previous recurring CTD I experienced some time ago while replaying the Port in "Out of the Dark, Into the Night", which also has Osiris.  I'm gonna try to investigate this possibility.

I want to apologize, to Goober and Admiral Ralwood.  It appears that I wasn't using the latest build after all, due to an unresolved launcher issue (thread started).  I haven't tried to make a run at the STL mission yet, but the ST:R mission worked properly.

I assume you're only looking for voice-acted campaigns, the most obvious choice would be the Blue Planet campaigns, but you may want to build up anticipation before going on with those ones, and maybe delay with the slim hope that a fully voice acted WiH Act3 might be released by the time you're ready.

Looking at the list of voice-acted campaigns, I see that there is the Capella-era "Fall of Epsilon Pegasi (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Fall_of_Epsilon_Pegasi)" by Blaise Russel.  For post-Capella campaigns prior to moving on with BP, Cold Element campaigns such as Derelict (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Derelict) would be a good choice.  From the list I'm seeing, out of the 4 campaigns from that continuity that have been released, 3 of them are voice acted.

In Rebels and Renegades, I can never seem to complete both the primary and secondary objectives.  Eventually, I was forced to edit the mission to ensure that both the Iceni and Hinton have their engines and hulls given guardian-theshold flags.  I don't like to lose.

Am I mistaken, but doesn't the latest MediaVP release include hi-poly AWACS, because the one I see in that mission looks Retail.

Oh I'm enjoying 'em alright.  I'm just trying to make sure you can make your future releases look as up-to-date as possible.  On that note, I believe that there are releases for the high-poly Medical ship and Ptah that have come out since the 2014 Media VP releases.  You may want to seek them out for the future.

If you're looking for post-Capella campaigns that are voice-acted, here are some recommendations:

Fall Of Epsilon Pegasi (though this technically takes place during FS2)
Warzone
Derelict

I'll reiterate on that with Procyon insurgency. It is so sadly overlooked that it's a criminal offense.

I just finished playing Warzone.  If you download the 2.3 Beta version, make sure to change the mod.ini file so that it redirects to the 2014 media VPs, instead of the 3612 ones it will by default.

A triple-bill... cool.

When playing "A Monster In The Mist", I usually watch which turrets the Sath is using against the Sobek and target those.  Then I pull back to the corvette and work in concert with its defenses to take out fighters until the Sath jumps and the fighters stop showing up.

That was cutting it quite close in "Bearbaiting".  My tactic is to launch 3 Trebs into the nearest turret, then follow it up with a dual Helios when I get to point-blank range.  I then repeat that with the next turret, reload and repeat.  I find that my wingmen don't do much against the main turrets in that mission, but in recent playthroughs I've gotten in the habit of sending my escorts to take out the flak guns.  I've never succeeded it taking out the belly turret too though.

Congrats on saving the Nebtu.  I've never managed to save the corvette.  I've come close, but never succeeded.

Warzone

As to your question...

Derelict.
Vassago's Dirge.
Blue Planet, eventually.

On an unrelated note, enter the gates, JAD awaits.

From all the campaigns y'all listed from Fall of epsilon pegasi to WarZone can somebody put them in order so it comes close to fitting the timeline I have currently, Thanks for you're everybody's input!
Title: Re: FreeSpace The Series
Post by: Trivial Psychic on September 24, 2016, 12:14:07 pm
Fall of Epsilon Pegasi takes place during the main FS2 campaign.  Its the events taking place when the NTF invade that system just prior to the Colossus' initial deployment.
Vassago's Durge takes place during the later end of the FS2 campaign.
Uncharted Territory is listed as an FS2-era campaign but I can't see exactly by the description.
Cleaning Crew is listed as Post-FS2.
Warzone and Aftermath are both post-FS2 campaigns and are part of the Cold Element continuity, but I believe that they take place before Derelict, which is also in that continuity.  Derelict is one of the longest user-made campaigns.  I'm currently playing through it myself.

I would like to point out however, that not all of these are voice acted, and so far you have limited yourself to voice-acted campaigns exclusively.

For more info on these and other campaigns, check out the list HERE (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Campaign_List).

Thanks for the quick fix.  I do have one bit of critique regarding a part of your tactics.  I tend to be a bit more conservative with my ordinance.  For example, I find that when turret sniping, you only need to fire one trebuchet per turret, unless that is, you're fighting against a Lilith or any destroyer except a Ravana.  I also find that you can often destroy fighters like the Manticore or Asteroth with a 4-shot of Tornadoes instead of the full 8.  That's my experience anyway.  I find it helps me not need to reload my ordinance as frequently.

Uncharted Territory is not currently voice acted and it takes place during the tail end of FS2.

Thanks everyone for all your inputs. I've been busy with work and other projects so response were limited. My plan for the rest of the series is continue doing campaigns with voice acted and 10+ missions only, so it kinda limits some of the ones y'all listed. I will be doing movie types videos so If you have any ideas everybody's input is great just keep the list in order of the current timeline that I am present with.

Thanks!

When you do decide which ones to do next, I would suggest that you update your Media VPs to 2014 and grab a few more updated models.  Also, if you decide on Derelict, I suggest you follow my attempts to grab the most recent version, and also see me about getting a fixed version of one mission.  You can read about it in the Derelict thread.

Warzone
Fall Of Epsilon Pegasi (IIRC this has 10 missions)

Big thanks to this community for keeping the game that I love alive without you so many others wouldn't be able to enjoy this game.

Operation Savior
Fall of epsilon Pegasi

Lightning marshall
Trimurti

I see during Darkest Hour that you had to repeat the mission.  It looks as though there are actually parts of 3 playthroughs in there.  As you came up on the point where the corvette attacked, you pulled back for repairs and there is a brief interruption.  Prior to that you were out of wingmen, but after that interruption you had one.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind if that kind of speed was more standard. I mean, it is probably faster than is reasonable, but I tend to find that voice acting errs far too much on the side of slowness -- and it often gets irritating when there are subtitles involved, because then I've read the line five times by the time the VA finishes.

Besides, she's giving a briefing for an upcoming combat mission. Not exactly a case where you have a lot of time on your hands.
Title: Re: FreeSpace The Series

Well, there's speaking fast to save time, but this is bordering on (or even past) speaking almost too fast to be understood. It's pretty jarring to me. I for one don't mind it if a VA speaks slower than I read subtitles. If she speaks faster than I read subtitles, then it distracts me and divides my attention.

Given the constraints we had to work with, the sheer size of her role, and the cost of getting retakes, this was the best we could do. 90% of her lines are great, the briefings are too fast but we simply didn't have the labor or money available to get redos.

Duly noted. Voice acting for Freespace mods seems (to me, anyway) a luxury, so it's always appreciated whenever it appears. I deliberately haven't played Blue Planet yet as I want to savor it properly after playing the other Freespace mods. I'm trying to save the best for last, as it were.

That's possible too but the JAD audience isn't that big, sadly.

Isn't that the point of promotion and marketing.

Sure, but the market for JAD isn't that big either.

Aren't JAD's jokes from several anime shows, though, and their tropes?

That too. JADs target audience is like
=>People who played FS
=>People who played FS and many FS mods
=>People who played FS and many FS mods who are part of HLP for a long time
=>People who played FS and many FS mods who are part of HLP for a long time who also like anime
=>People who played FS and many FS mods who are part of HLP for a long time who also like anime and watched the same shows as Axem

Tenebra would be the obvious choice, but its lack of voice acting means that you'll need a large font and people will have to pause quite a lot to keep up with the dialogue.

I'd vote for BTA. It's one of the things you could just put somewhere and tell people "go play this cool game" even if they don't know what FS is.

There are many campaigns not appearing on YouTube. I’d suggest starting with them.

Idea: a longplay of vassago’s dirge would be nice, although arguably this would have to be made without the music (shame).

I presume NJSP 3002 is mostly interested in a presentation of voiced campaigns.
Title: Re: FreeSpace The Series
Post by: starlord on March 14, 2020, 06:31:45 pm
yes, I can see why, as voiced campaigns are somewhat easier to follow when made in vids this way.

On the other hand there are many great campaigns without voice acting, and showcasing them might contribute also in generating interest.

Interesting idea to cross-fade from dialogue to combat so as to remove the pauses with nothing going on.  Not sure how I feel about that.  It probably makes for a more engaging video to watch.

I feel some viewers would just do it anyways because to just see someone sitting there with no action or dialogue going on I feel they might skip over something important.... figure id help with that.

Awesome. :)

Well done saving the Harthenet on that last mission.  I didn't think it was possible to protect it and the Narandum, but some people reported it was possible, so I added a hack to self-destruct the Harthenet if the Ranoth's beams were destroyed.  Impressive to actually see it done.

Note: some subsystem handling is broken on the SD Demon model included in the latest MVPs, so until they release an update, you should play the ISF loop with a previous version of Scroll which uses the old MVPs.
