Starts here.

Nice job, DLing now! :)
-
Can I get all of the missions and tables from this new release? Just the two folders in question. It would be much easier to get it registered in PXO that way.
-
I'm getting a "MediaVPs" (4.0.0) requires "GOTY Mission Pack" which is missing!". I've got retail installed and have been using Knossos for a while now without issue. Is there a "GOTY Mission Pack" somewhere?
-
Knossos should have downloaded that pack automatically...

Love the new sounds and models.
-
Oh, a new MVP release. Nice.
Unfortunately they does not seem to work on my end.
If i load a mission, my game crashes right away :(.
Do not have this problem with 3.8 however.

Excellent! New data is now validated for PXO. That saved me a whole lot of download time. :D

Highlight pls?

There is definitely something odd going on there... Looks like you went with a manual install. Are you on Windows?
-
Congratz
small thing: fixed ulysses (https://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=94975.msg1879968#msg1879968) not included :warp:
-
Hmm. How would I go about getting the FS1 assets to show? I've tried extracting them from the VP and turning them into .tbm files, then dropping them into a data>tables folder but no dice so far.
-
You need to get the tbl from FSPort (or a custom one) and paste the entry of, say, the Apollo into your ships.tbl.

It's destined to never be fixed.
I've just put it on our SVN. It'll be there next time.. mostly likely.

Thanks for the help! I still tinkered around and found that each entry had a line with +nocreate in it. Deleting those made everything work too.

That is, indeed, the fix. The reason why is because +nocreate tells FSO not to "create" a new ship when it builds it's ship-list. That's the magic behind how the MediaVPs works, essentially. Except in the case of a few entries, almost all of the MediaVPs is done using +nocreate so that mods that build upon the MediaVPs don't have to include all of the retail ships and weapons. #learning
-
OK, I looked at the shiny new HercII. Things I noticed besides the good look: the model has 8 times the mass of the retail model (1603 vs 187 whatevers), and the eyepoint is now inside the pilots' neck.
-
Blame Axem. Fix'll be in a patch.
-
Great work folks!
I was getting an error about finding the correct executable (with RC1 19.0.0) that I'm pretty sure was fixed after opening the modify option (verify file integrity did not fix the path issue).

Yes, i am using manual install, because Knossos does not identify the installed mods i have. So i stick myself to the FSOInstaller for mod updates.
And yes, i am using Windows.

So MVPS 4.0 rely on the GOTY mission pack? Wouldn't it be easier to integrate the mission pack into MVPS since you're forcing its usage anyway?
-
With the GOTY pack as a dependency, it won't load when mods use the MediaVPs and thus the missions won't load.
-
What about the Arcadia with fixed docking points?
-
Hi g'morning. First time posting, love this game since it was first release. i've downloaded the new 4.0 on the knossos. I tried to played on other campaigns like warzone for an example. it loaded as 3.8. There something I miss here?
-
Some mods have set themselves not to use newer version of the MediaVPs. It could be a mistake or the author wanted to make sure their mod wouldn't break with newer versions. The author of the mod will need to update the mod on Knossos for it to take advantage of 4.0.
-
I have a problem. It finished installing but I get "no executable found." How do I fix that?
EDIT: Nevermind. It looks like the GOTY mission pack needed to be DLed
-
Looking forward to trying this out but I'm getting an an odd glitch. When trying to open it - or mods that use it by the looks of it - the 'FSO is launching' message appears for a split second but then nothing happens. I have noticed this has happened before when major updates have been made and I'm sure it is something you guys will patch out as before, but I'm just making you aware of it.
-
Of course we are going to need an updated version of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RM1YC_gK-qo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RM1YC_gK-qo) to show off the new eye candy ;7

I was trying MediaVPs 4.0. :P I ran it again and the same thing happened. Is it trying to open up the wrong files or similar? That might explain why it isn't working properly.
Halp! :)

Check if you're using the 19.0.0-RC1 build.

Yup, looks like it it is.

Can you just run MediaVPs 4.0 without Vassago's Dirge please?

Can you just run MediaVPs 4.0 without Vassago's Dirge please?
That is exactly what I am trying to do. It looks like it may be trying to open up VD for some reason.
Can I check I am following the correct process: 1) Open knossos. 2) Attempt to run the MVP 4.0 (Herc 2 icon) 3) Open Debug log. 4) Paste the results. Am I missing a step somewhere?
Cheers.
-
I just noticed that log is from January. So in Knossos, go to MediaVPs 4.0 and click the dropdown menu choose to run Fast Debug. After you finish that. Click that dropdown again and upload the debug log. Past the link it spits out here.

I figerd I was missing something. When I ran the debug log it said 'it was last run 300 days ago is this when you encountered? the problem? 'I clicked yes since I wasn't sure what to do and it spat out this.

Hope this helps :-)

That's still not the correct log. Are you sure you are running a debug build first?

Trying to, but perhaps I'm not doing it right. What do I need to do to run a debug build first?

Opened log 'data/fs2_open.log', Sun Jan 13 22:56:38 2019 ...
Nope that's not the right log.
-
Click on the "down arrow" icon on the tile for MediaVPs 4.0. The top option in the list should be "Run Fast Debug". Just click on that; play until you hit the bug; then provide the debug log link.

Tried that, didn't work. The problem is that it doesn't run the game at all which is probably why it is not generating a new debug log and keeps showing the one from January with VD.
-
When you click Play on the MediaVPs does it bring up a window showing you all the selected mods with an option to OK or CANCEL?

'fraid not. All that happens is the 'FSO is launching' text flickers on for a split second in the box next to the white search box, then nothing.

Sounds like Knossos isn't finding a build to run. In your Knossos settings, what FSO Build channel are you allowing? I'm assuming it's set to 'Stable'.

I have tried 'Stable', 'RCs' and 'Nightlies'. Same result with each.
I tried altering the FSO build too. Mod default didn't work. FSO 19.0.0-RC1 didn't work. On a whim I tried it with FSO 3.8.0-3. That DID work, but with error pop-up boxes. So I have a partial workaround now :-)
Any advice re how to get everything to play nice together will still be greatly appreciated of course :-)

Did you do anything custom with your install?

Did you do anything custom with your install?
I don't think so. I just ticked all the boxes as usual
-
Nice release. Considering all the rings I had to jump through in order to get both FS1 and FS1 MediaVPS Content while having custom tables back when I was setting up a certain project of mine, this is certainly massive step in the right direction.
FS1 Port updated yet?
-
Nope not yet.

For those who like the manual method, here are the files you'll need to put in your MediaVPs_40x folder, including custom bitmap files for the launcher (until a ninja comes and steals them on the black market):
1) mod.ini
2) FS2.bmp
3) Fs2_Small.bmp
They are compressed into a ZIP file for your convenience. :pimp:

Visually, as usual, the new MediaVPs are stunning. I have, and always will, love the graphics work the Hard-Light crew have produced. Amazing work.
Now, the updated explosion sounds - awful. Listening to an Arcadia installation self-destruct and hearing what I can only describe as a "poochie, poochie, poochie" sound for each explosion is absolutely disconcerting and wrong.
Please tell me there is a way to override the new explosion sounds in favor of the old ones. Please. :(

You can extract the old files from the MVPs and put them into MVPs/data/sounds, but you need to make sure that they're named identical.
-
I'm afraid I've never picked apart a VP file to extract bits of what is contained in them. Can this be done with FRED?

There is software that can do it, such as VPView32 and VPmage. It's best to have both.
VPView32 can be found here: https://wiki.hard-light.net/index.php/VPView32
This will allow you to see images, hear sounds, open, and read info inside .VPs without extracting them, as well as extract files. But you can't make/edit VP files with it.
VPmage can be found here:
https://wiki.hard-light.net/index.php/VPMage
You can both extract and make .VPs with this one, but you can't view anything more then file titles and directories.

This thread makes me wonder, is it possible to have multiple sound files selected for a single sound table entry? It would be awesome to have different sounding booms each time a boom happens. :)

According to wiki ( https://wiki.hard-light.net/index.php/Sounds.tbl ):
"Sound set syntax": If this syntax is in use then the new sound set features can be used. These include the ability to use multiple sound files for one entry and with this feature it is possible to randomize the volume and pitch values when a sound is played. Compared to the SCP syntax there are only a few changes: Instead of +Filename this now uses +Entry and allows using that option as often as needed. The +Volume option accepts a random range for possible values and the +Pitch option is new.
In most entries, the name of the file (Second value) can be replaced with 'empty' if the particular sound index is not in use.

Hmm, I'm going to see If I can make a sound TBM that uses both the new and old sounds, will copy code here if I get it working.
This may take a while.

It should be noted that attachments (since most people looking for this would probably be lurkers) are invisible to non-members.
Here's the most relevant content, the mod.ini:
[launcher]
modname = MediaVPs 4.0;
##image255x112 = FS2.bmp;
##image182x80 = FS2_small.bmp;
infotext = Freespace II - SVN MediaVPs;
website = http://www.hard-light.net/;
forum = http://www.hard-light.net/forums;
mantis = http://www.hard-light.net/mantis;
I commented the image parts out.

I'm interested in this.

It's ready, FS1, FS2, and the new MVP sounds for explosions all together!
just unpack it into the MediaVPs_40X folder or wherever appropriate.
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1tBSUqJLOI_Hv62jIHYDbMMNo2xYjvYrL
NOTE: due to how the sound.tbl works, this can only function as a .TBM do not attempt to merge it into a .tbl
Also, the current MVP sounds play twice as often as the older ones, that's a quirk of the tbm as well.

So, what about integrating other cool explosion sounds from some mods? I remember that at some point Blue Planet used (and still uses, but now a bit different ones) some other explosion sounds than MVPS. I also vaguely recall that The Aftermath Reboot had some different ones, too.
I would be cool to have really varied explosion sounds.

I tried to add the BP ones, but FSO started giving errors about them being multi-channel and not 3D-sound compatible. . .
if you can get around that or have other sounds then sure, just add the files and extend the table as needed.
-
I've thrown in 4 more sounds from The Aftermath Reboot, for the convenience, the file names start with AF.
Not sure if this works well as hosting but whatever https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/223511363807346691/648820288095518720/Multiboomsounds.zip (https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/223511363807346691/648820288095518720/Multiboomsounds.zip)

Played a few classic missions and those shockwaves are reallz sexy :-)

Agreed! Those new framebuffer shockwaves are gorgeous!

Thanks for putting this together, I'll give it a try and see if lessens the amount of "poochie" explosions heard in-game. While that particular new explosion sound was alright for smaller ships exploding (like fighters), it sounds ridiculous when cap ships/installations explode. The original deep explosion sounds should only play during such occurrences.
-
This is a decent sound pack. I like the mildly tweaked sounds of Aftermath (which are just FS2 originals with some extra lower-level layering in of 1 or 2 extra effects). Much better than what I was hearing.
Thanks for posting up a link, MitoPL.

Hmm, any way to fix that up? Maybe adding the same file entry into .tbm as it is in .tbl once again causes that and it'll do just fine without it?
@AV8R: Sure, no problem, but there's definitely a lot of credit to give to Herkie for the effects. I've just unpacked the stuff and thrown it into an archive after copy-pasting some table entries. Also, what do you think of the two sounds I've selected for the "atomic" effect? It's the explosion of a destroyer-sized or bigger ship. There was one more sound of the bunch but it wasn't really up to be used for this, it sounded more like a shockwave only than an explosion.
-
Am I the only one who doesn't like the new warp effects? :nervous: The old ones were probably the closer than any other warpmaps ever made to what :v-old: would have done, while the current ones make me think I'm
trapped in a yuri dungeon playing WoD.
-
The new ones don't look ugly / low texture when big ships jump tho.
Also the old ones were :v: ones, this is the first time their textures have ever been updated. :warp: :P
-

I thiought they were made from scratch, never read about that.

I'm 90% sure that statement is wrong.

They were converted to .DDS, but other then that the 38X ones are the same as the retail ani.
You did make me double check tho.
-
Really ? I thought for sure that they had waaay higher definition & more animation.
-
It's possible that the retail ones were used as base, but the old 38X had a 1024 resolution while retail had only 256.

You mean the "Cap_Boom" and "Kaboom2" sounds? Yes, I like them a lot. I also like that the FS1 explosion sounds were included too. I went ahead the placed them all in my new MediaVPs_40x\data folder. I actually overwrote the new MV_Boom_3.ogg file (the one that has that "poochie" effect) with the old version so that new sound is heard less in game. I love the end result. Thanks again for your post (and to "Herkie", whoever you are).
-
Hey it was my idea! :p and I put the FS1 sounds in there!
Oh, you can also add Pitch randomization to make even more sounds!
just add this after "+Attenuation End:":
+Pitch: 0.9 1.1
I Almost considered adding Kerbal Space Program's explosion sounds in there as a joke. .
Oh my, we could also do the half-life 1 sound effects meme with this. . .
Hey Axem, I have an Idea for the next JAD update!
-
Any chance the FSport MediaVP's will get updated soon?
-
I'd say there's a large chance they won't be needed anymore or considerably cut down, as many assets from there were moved into MediaVPs 4.0.0.
-
Port will still need to be updated to take advantage of them. FSU does not manage the Port MediaVPs. You'll need to ask that team.
-
Okay, regarding the additional explosion sounds table - I've found a way to even the chances of each boom playing... I just needed to get rid of entries already existing in retail sound.tbl... Grab the table (this time I'm just slapping it in code tags, me lazy bastard):
#Game Sounds Start
$Name: +nocreate 7
+Entry: Old_Boom_3.ogg
+Entry: FS1boom_3.wav
+Entry: AF_boom_5.ogg
+Cycle type: random
+Volume: 0.90
+3D Sound:
+Attenuation Start: 600
+Attenuation End: 1200
$Name: +nocreate 49
+Entry: Old_Boom_1.ogg
+Entry: FS1boom_1.wav
+Entry: AF_boom_4.ogg
+Cycle type: random
+Volume: 0.90
+3D Sound:
+Attenuation Start: 600
+Attenuation End: 1200
$Name: +nocreate 59
+Entry: AF_cap_boom.ogg
+Entry: AF_kaboom2.ogg
+Cycle type: random
+Volume: 0.90
+3D Sound:
+Attenuation Start: 2000
+Attenuation End: 4000
$Name: +nocreate 101
+Entry: old_ClusterBoom
+Cycle type: random
+Volume: 1.20
+3D Sound:
+Attenuation Start: 750
+Attenuation End: 1700
#Game Sounds End
#Interface Sounds Start
#Interface Sounds End
#Flyby Sounds Start
#Flyby Sounds End

Very cool! What would it take to integrate the extra sounds and this new randomizing sound table into FSO and FS Port?
