back ta math people!

for a cookie can someone explain to me, somewhat simply, what rings/fields are? The explanation on wolfram wasn't exactly the easiest to comprehend with my level of math jargon :p
Science alone of all the subjects contains within itself the lesson of the danger of belief in the infallibility of the greatest teachers in the preceding generation . . .Learn from science that you must doubt the experts. As a matter of fact, I can also define science another way: Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts. - Richard Feynman

I think they are something similar to vector spaces, basically sets of numbers that satisfy a bunch of rules. The rules for the ring are the ones given on the Mathworld site and include most of the usual real number rules. The field is like a ring but the elements in a field also need to have multiplicative inverses (that are also in the field) and be commutative under multiplication in addition to satisfying all the ring rules. I have no idea why these rings and fields are so important though.
