MSBlaster is actually a rather pathetic virus
I just reinstalled Windows, and I was immediately hit by it before I had updated Norton or Windows. However, it was quite easy to kill (just ending the process in Task Manager and then deleting all occurences on the hard drive). My question is, how did a virus that easy to kill cause so many problems?

How do you expect people to use task manager, registry editotor or how they could know what to search for from the Win partition if they don't even understand anything about firewalls, anti-virus softwares or how important it is to keep your system patched with latest security patches?

They don't because they don't know how to use or access those.

True. This makes me think back to the person who ran the computer lab in my junior high a few years back: She had to call in someone else to tell her to Ctrl-Alt-Del.

EDIT: Apparently not only was I hit by the MSBlaster virus, I was also hit by the modified variant which attempts to save your computer too :p

Because the guy who modified had misguided good intentions, and had the worm go and download the patch. The problem with it was it still clogged your network connection due to it's nature.

I heard about that, on the net somewhere.. A bug to kill a bug.

It also stated that the person responcible for the MSBlast virius may be the same one who wrote the worm that seeks it out and kills it.:wtf:
I know, it doesn`t make much sence, does it.

Not all of us have time to cruise the registry for the virus. Especially the IT guys.
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside
