but the class buffer-overrun-becomes-bluescreen buggs are still there (and haven't been patched since win95!).

If it's the BSOD's you're referring to, they are not caused by the OS itself.

It could also be that one of your components is dying. It could cause wierd stuff to happen.

well, as i said, try Knoppix and you might know if this one is hardware based. there's no harm in trying it, you can always using it as an backup OS for typing incase something dies and you have work that _has_ to be finished that day.

Kasperl, I've never used linux but that doesn't prohibit me from trying it.  What does prohibit me is the fact that I don't have a phone line at home yet so I'd have to download it from work and put it on a CD.  Which means I'd have to wait til the weekend to try (if I can sneak in the bandwidth use)

I had the computer boxed when I moved since I wsan't really using it, so I'm going to unpack it tonight and try the suggestions on this thread.

ok, Knoppix is a pretty large download if you'll only use it as an diagnostic tool, but it's great to see if something is software related, since it installs itself to the RAM each time you boot. aside from that, i wouldn't know where the problem was, and it's hard to make a diagnosis if you haven't got the PC under your hands.
