German really sucks though, don't waste your time on it. Learn something useful such as spanish. (0wnage!)

Bah! I say! Bah!

I hate Spanish! I want a language that isn't spoken by every third person in NY!

Go for Latin. ;)

IMHO the best language. Ok the grammar so hard to learn that it's hard to speak in sentences, but at least it's logical grammar.

BTW we talked about languages a long time ago, AFAIR. ;)

Well, in *that* case, Drow is your friend. Nothing can beat a completely artificial AD&D language  ;7

"Ich kann kein Deutsch. Ich finde dass ich viele Fehler mache."

That would be the correct sentence. "know a language" is translated by "eine Sprache können", i.e. being capable of using that language. I'm not certain what that last part is about - "ü(u)bergebe" could be "hand sth over" or "turn sth over", which doesn't make too much sense, or it could be about airing your belly...

Well, so much for that little language lesson. :)

Err, I was actually attempting both in this thread, but I have since dropped both as well. I don't even have the time now, I don't know why I brought this up.

...and gain the social status of those who speak Klingon... Nein danke. :p

I'd actually like to learn Korean. It doesn't sound super hard to pronounce half of the words. But I'd never learn the alphabet.

That last bit was a babelfish translation for "I surrender" because I never learned that...

"Surrender" in the meaning of "to give up"?

Then it's "Ich gebe auf." :)

Learn Portuguese then. You then have the advantage of understanding spanish people but them not having the faintest clue what you're on about :D

Italian is somehow the same . . . it is terribly hard to speak.

Will mich hier jemand über den Gebrauch der Deutschen Sprache aufklären? :p

Man kann natürlich sagen daß man eine Sprache kann oder nicht, aber es ist eben halt nunmal ein ziemlich schlechter Stil im Vergleich.

karajorma: Español es mejor que el portugués en muchas maneras, pero sobre todo porque suena mucho mejor. El portugués nunca me ha gustado. Y que no me pregunten porqué, ni siquiera yo mismo lo sé. :p

Lightspeed, how many languages do you actually speak? From what you're writing I couldn't tell whether you're an english-, german- oder spanish native speaker...but my spanish isn't good to any extent.

Anybody with some scandinavian languages? So we could create at least some connection to the Loki...:p

I'm thinking German is his native, and the other two are his preferences.

But he's got the advantage, with Spanish, in that he doesn't have a continent and a half of people south of him speaking it, who often enough come to the US and don't learn English.

It's pretty frustrating trying to talk to these people when I'm working, since they don't speak a word of English. :doubt:

It's turned me off to the language.

The fun here is that you can expect other people speak your language. Me, as a Central-European cannot expect anyone to know a word of my language if I ever do abroad.

I don't mean it to be arrogant, but I do think that when you go to other countries, you should make an effort to atleast learn some of the language there. Especially if you go to live there.   I wouldn't move to Ecuador and demand that everyone learn English to accomodate me, but yet more and more, I'm finding, that we have to learn spanish to deal with them.  I see  now why Quebec has it's French-only laws...

And I know how I sound very ethnocentric saying this, but I don't care. It's courtesy.

I agree with that one.
Although I think there should be exceptions. Like i.e. political refugees.

The people should at least try to learn the language. In their own interest.

Well, that entirely depends :)

I speak four languages more or less fluently, but also know a bit on some other languages (not really much in most cases, however).

Well, both are "native", though there's several problems with my spanish. Thing is, I never went to school in spain so my spelling is er.... rather bad. :p And I don't use it often enough, so... :doubt:

No, but here we have quite a lot of turkish people who don't bother to learn any other languages as well :p

That's cause they suck. They should at least try and communicate in English.

What's the problem with the turks? Just order your Döner, they'll understand it most of the time. :drevil:

Agreed. There's a major debate going on over here at the time, politicians are discussing whether language courses should be mandatory for any immigrants - even before elementary school. They should've started this quite some time ago. The way it went so far, it has only furthered the development of a variety of social issues, like the minorities sticking together, shielding themselves from the exterior. I wonder how long this'll be in the news before it's forgotten.
