Well, either use one of those racks, but it better be a cooled one. Or you could use some of those mounting thingies :

Don't have a source right now, but you should get the idea. :)

As for the cooling, modern HDDs should definitely be cooled, as they get pretty hot, depending on the casing. My recently purchased Barracuda 7200 was, according to heat sensors, the hottest part in my PC. I got some cheap fan that's attached below the drive, and it's lost 20°C in temperature.

im using a laptop hard drive as my primary storage medium. its on an ide adapter i had ordered awhile back. unfortunately i didnt think to order an adapter bracket for it, so i used the tried and true 'duct tape it to the floppy drive' method. its right by the forward pair of fans so im not woried about it overheating.

I'm actually using one of those brackets (see mitac's post) for an ancient 5.5 GB HDD at the moment.  I was using it to copy a few things, and it was the only way I had to get the drive close enough to the DVD-ROM to connect to the same cable.

Yep I was worried about the stacking.

Its the hard drive.  Confirmed.  I turned the system on with both of them unpluged, then just one (and the other to be sure). Its the old 20GB....made in 2000 actually.  Warranty over in 2003.  *sigh*

Its my primary drive....

Anyways, they are no longer stacked but that is probably not going to help.

But then again, I've only come across it once, and that was many a year ago.

I wouldnt do it if the warranty is still good. Only if the owner really needs the data on it and is willing to try anything.

Actually, no. Not necessarily. Had that happen to me once after a power outage. Would not do a damn thing except click. Warranty was up, so I popped the cover off and looked inside. The read head had got stuck all the way over to the outside (the actuator jammed from the surge when the power came back up or something, I dunno). I 'un-stuck' it. Put the cover back on, and away it went. Still using it.

Hm. I still have my 40 gigger which clicks... if this works, I'll eKiss you :p

Clicking isnt always a sign of that. The only reason it clicked for me was because it was trying to move, but kept hitting the edge of the platter.
