Author Topic: Weird Noises?  (Read 936 times)

Why is it that when I boot up my computer, this sometimes happens.

When it gets to the Windows XP Loading Screen (logo and little loading bar pops up with the black background) my computer makes this weird whirring/buzzing noise. Like something is spinning round and round. I thought it might be the Hard Drive, but I doubt it. However, I could be wrong. There is nothing in the CD Drives, so, I dont know...

What is it?

Could be the CPU Fan kicking in?

I'm guessing its your CPU fan. Mine did that sometimes. Usually directly when I booted. I bought a new fan and it didn't happen again. Its the scratchy noises you should be worried about. :nervous:
I have returned... Again...

I dont think I found any of those in there.

Anyhow, after a while the whirring noises die down and eventually just go away. It only happens every once and a while when I boot up my computer, meaning about every 2 or 3 boots it will kick this noise on, and then after 5 minutes it goes away.

It also did it when I had a particular thing my computer had installed on it unhooked, for example: I unhook my keyboard, boot up my computer, and it begins the noise, then I turn it off, plug it back in, turn it on, no noise. Its like My computer knows when Im missing something and alerts me with this crappy noise...

I assume the noise is coming out of the box and not the speakers?  Sometimes you can get noise from your CD-Rom drives spinning up/down that comes through the speakers, but it really sounds like a cooling fan is going bonkers on ya.  you can try putting a drop of 3-in-1 oil on the bearing and hope that fixes it, but with fans as cheap as 5-10 dollars a piece, it'd be easier to replace it.  The processor fan, depending on what kind it is, is another story altogether.  Some fans must put out a specific CFM in order to cool effectively.

Put simply, yeh, probably a fan.

Those are bad sectors (data clusters) on your HDD.
Do a defragmentation of your HDD and try again. If you still hear it, then you´ve got physically damaged sectors, and you better start saving for a new drive.
No Freespace 3 ?!? Oh, bugger...
