Sorry for this OT but, I just read this:
 http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Games/Reviews/e32001day3/2.html

I was looking forward this game, even if I didn't like starlancer. But now... WTF??? We won't be able to use joysticks at all in FL??? Oh well... I'll never understand game developers i'm afraid. They think they have a good idea, ok, they can put it in, but imposing it to players without giving them the choice, that's another thing...
I remember this game, Die By the Sword (like freespace, a good game that ddn't reach the success it deserved), it had a brand new controle scheme with the mouse, and I liked this o ne, but I guess many peolple didn't, coz it was very hard to use (basically you moved the mouse, your character moved his sword the same way). Tantrum gave the player the choice tio use a more common interface with "I push button 1, I give a slash".
Digital anvil should learn from other people, coz for myself I played the first Xwing with the mouse, it was a pain.
Now it seems that in FL the ship follows the targeted ship by itself, you jsut have to aim and shoot... cool...
Mmh, where are my Freespace1 CDs? It's not the most beautiful game ever, but it's fun.

You use a joystick? Why would anyone pay to use a product inferior to the standard keyboard? I can't stand pads and joysticks.

I'm under the impression that you have never use a joystick before? If the answer is no, then I suggest you try one. To most people, its easier to control a fighter with a joystick.

Well, in my opinion, joysticks are better. how you guys control a fighter with a keyboard I have not even the slightest idea.

You don't have fine controls with a keyboard, just up, down, left, right. I can't play that way, I need my a little bit up, a little bit more up, just a little bit more up, ...

F16's are flown using a keyboard for a reason...

As for joysticks being inferior try playing FS with force feedback, it's a bit more difficult to fly the thing when you're actually being thrown about by the blasts. Far more interesting with a joystick/keyboard combination.

Umm..hello...F-16's?  As in the current day, high performance military fighter used by the USAF and a variety of other airforces around the world?

F-16's use a sidestick instead of the traditionally mounted stick in between the pilots legs.

No two ways about it.

As for FreeLancer, I'm really interested in the new control scheme.  The comments expressed on this board are an example of how little we really think or accept or even remain open to new control schemes and concepts.

To me, the new mouse driven control and the neural net AI system for controling your ship sounds like a really neat and interesting idea.  I can't wait to give it a try.

So far, all its met with is negativity based on very little experience and alot of preconception.

I don't know, I like the "tried and true" keyboard.
I tried with a joystick, but was unable to calibrate the damn thing.
As for the mouse, I use that along with the keyboard in Deus Ex. No problems there...

From what I have heard about FreeLancer it's neural net AI should be similar to I-War2's automatic piloting options I've heard about in the earlier previews. (I don't know if it's in the demo or still in the game, I don't keep up with this sort of thing)

Personally, the neural net idea is perfect for a capital ship game like I-War since it then means you either pilot the ship and give orders for gun handling, or you do gunnery and give the crew orders for navigation, or even let the crew do all of the work for you while you do "more important" things like getting your co-fee.

For fighter simulations, I do not see this as a revolutionary new idea.

The nostalgia of small craft space sims is the manual WWII style flight, even if it's newtonian, but being able to handle your ship in your own way with the human element. (i.e. FS, D3, I-War2 multi with manual flight used)

I do not see NeuralNet as being a fun feature no matter how much it's toted for being adaptive in FL if it's intended to be a Privateer style game.

The moral of the story? Ace wants something that his own mind and hand can move manually to do complex manuvers, Ace wants to be the Ace, not some neural net AI.

This is all under the assumption that FreeLancer is meant to have the WW2 style dogfighting that we've seen since WC1 right through to FS2.

Some of the controls sound vaguely StarSiege-ish in the way that the guns work.  Sounds intruging to me.

I just got my first real joystick today, right after I bought X-Wing: Alliance (great game, and definately worth the $8 I paid for it  ) because that required a joystick. I haven't tested it with FS2 yet, I'll have to wait 'till I get back home on monday.

Oh, the joystick is a Logitech WingMan Interceptor, got it for about $20. Works great with XW:A, I hope it works with FS2.

Now back to the real subject... EVE-Online uses a keyboard/mouse interface, but that's more of a strategy game anyway.

Give me my good old mouse, far better accuracy(?). I tried using my sidewinder precision pro but I sucked bad. So now I only use it for a racing game (need for speed porche unleashed).

Ummm obviously I should have put [sarcasm] [/sarcasm] before and after that F16 thing.

Ace said it though, who wants the equivalent of something that resembles a point and click adventure?
You think Freelancer you expect something like Starlancer, Wingcommander or FS.

I want to have direct control over every little movement of my ship and when I want the enemy to go away I press the trigger. Simple, excellent, fun. (and usually requires a joystick in my case   )
