First off, very nice work, for a beginning renderer.   The models are rendered very crisply and the thruster glows look great. The lasers are also nicely done, and are fairly well aligned to the perspective of the scene...but the Mara isn't. It seems to be almost as far away from the camera as the Herc is, and the angle the Herc seems to be firing at just doesn't seem to match up. If the exploding Mara were bigger, it would help a lot. Also, you could try to use realistic lighting and shadows- the engine lights look good, like I said, but making it look more like the sun is the only source of white illumination on the Herc would be great. And, to make the shadowed parts still visible, you could color them darkly in green, from the lasers.

Just my bit of humble criticism!   Keep them coming, once again, excellent work!

Cool render dude!

as for the explosion, I think it could be a method Setekh told me about yesterday. Hint: Uses the explosion .ani from the sparky.vp file.

If your using Photoshop, try extracting the one frame you want from the explosion using Aniview, then import that as a new layer into your picture. Then change the layer blending to addition or screen (I use screen). This should get rid of all the black around the explosion. Layer them to get a brighter more interesting explosion (haven't tried this yet but Setekh (who doesn't tell me everything) says it's good).

this render is in real 3D done in truespace, so the mara is exactly the right size, even if it doesn't seem that way. and i did use
realistic lighting, the sun is the source of white illumination. there are no lights on the thrusters (there aren't in FS, so there aren't in my render. i'm trying to make it true to the game) and i tried making green illumination on the herc, but it didn't look right.
and who said i'm a beginning renderer?
