I still stand firm that the best damn 'war-story' in Gundam is the original in movie format. - That is from a storytelling point.
(Tomino could cut out a load of crap the marketing guys forced onto him)
War is hell - that's the sum.
For sheer execution MS0083 takes the crown - best mecha and fight coreography, and it showed both sides in a human and sympathetic way, that you could relate to.
MS0083 Stardust was more about being in war, than war in general - so while the message is the same - 'War is hell' - it telled more by puting - that will burn YOU - a personal message and perpective into the equation.
MS0080 War in a Pocket takes the 'drama' avard; and best damn graphics award of it time award too.
It wasn't really a war story in the classical Gundam sense, it was more of MS83's personal rendition interleaved with the motif of growing up....and of course 'War is hell'.
When compared to these I find 8th MS a 'bit' lackluster - it's too vauge. Simply put Shiro Amada is the only one who could convey the personal motif here.
However the execution was lackluster in that area.
The love story could have been well executed - however it was weak, and as a result Shiro's turn over doesn't fit the general structure.
(MS0083 also suffered from a dicthomy (following GP01 and GP02's destruction) - the most probable reason is that both shows suffered a take over in director. (8th MS's original director died during the filming).)
So from a mere storytelling point I find 8th MS weaker than the original or 83.
(While 80 hadn't had so much scope to begin with.)
SEED was a very nice re-rendition of the original story, and the main reason why I liked it was the bravery of the director to pull a pacifist turn.
Gundam has always been an anti-war war story, but so far it was never said that 'You can make a difference', which in out troubled times is a very potent and needed message.
My real gripe with SEED is the whole rendition of a Gundam squad - if they could just abandon the whole Gundam Wing mania of marketability with lotsa Gundams and pretty boys they could have prevented a whole lot of the stupidities that plagued the show.
Namely: SEED shined whenever only a single Gundam was present - and yes, the Archangles was in deep **** every once in a while.
If they had done proper damage to the ship and the Gundam, the show would have been a lot better.
Likewise - whenever the Red suits attacked the ship it was a mere excuse to show recycled footage over and over again, just like in Wing (worst G show ever).
For heaven's sake don't treat your suits - even Gudams - like jewel. GSeed kicked ass when the Strike was in depth of combat and kicking up mud.
Forget the pretty hq footage too.
I don't care if the footage won't be that shiny and uberpolished - I won't care as long as there is coreography, and plain and simple involvement in battle.
Watch the original series - we haven't seen the kind of mind blowing agility and cleverness Amuro showed with the Gundam in any other show. (Except for 8th MS and 0083)
That's what I lack...
...and whenever Kira was busy fighting 'mere' Goofs it retuned every once in a while.
That's what should have been the real standard to live up to.
