WASD is almost as bad.
8792 with 8-button mouse all the way. There are almost always enough buttons on the numpad to be able to keep your hand in one position all the time. The thing with the simultaneous keypresses can be fixed by just using a USB keyboard.
USB keyboards, IIRC, can cause problems on bootup for many machines as the BIOS doesn't natively detect them.
The numpad has, for some reason or the other, never actually worked for games for me. Also it's running into the other problems in terms of desk space (I physically can't do that in my current desk because I'm left handed and I have a sort of bookcase thing on that left side), and more importantly it's still non-intuitive as you have to stretch those fingers; and the pinkie is rendered totally useless unless you contort your hand.
Anyways, I think there's pretty strong evidence the Pc setup isn't perfect, which is my whole point.

Seriously, aiming with those analog sticks is so bad that most consoles FPSs have a weak aimbot built in to add a bit of accuracy. They work well for other types of games but are terrible for FPSs.
Regardless of aiming....I know there are people who would - vehemently - disagree (for one thing, my mouse has developed an odd habit of reversing pitch randomly), but to be honest who gives a **** so long as the game is
fun. Goldeneye, IMO of course, on the N64 had a weak (but perfectly judged) autoaim effect and
to this day it is the best FPS I have ever played. Because it's not just about the mechanics of aiming, is it?
Hell, there's even an arguement for the mouse removing the skill of it; just look at, say, the ludicrous system used in BF2 where they seem to randomly direct bullets in order to make it reasonably challenging to hit someone.
Not to mention - you're (I bet) more used to aiming with a mouse than a joypad.
Thinking about it.... the Revolution controller could be ****ing ace for FPS'.........
