Re: It's about time for Mel Gibson to commit himself.
Let's examine the Oscar winners over the last ten years:

Million Dollar Baby
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Chicago
A Beautiful Mind
Gladiator
American Beauty
Shakespeare in Love
Titanic
The English Patient
Braveheart

Now, while Titanic and Braveheart are insults to the art of film, the only minority I see covered here is the Hobbit community.

I thought Bravehart was a fun movie.

Obviously not historically accurate or educational, but I found it amusing.

I'm glad I studied Shakespeare BEFORE 'Shakespeare in Love'. :o
EDIT: Was that a vBulletin smiley?  ;)

Do you intend on completing that sentence?  Or are we to wait in anticipation?

Might you be referring to a certain cowboy film that has pissed off a fair number of idiots while doing well at the Golden Globes?

I'd be lying if I said Brokeback Mountain looked interesting to me, but I get the impression that it is a well-made film, and I think it's unfair to claim that its recognition comes solely from the fact that it's a homosexual love story. De-Lovely was about one of the most famous gay men in American history and it didn't get squat, so I don't think it's as formulaic as you might think.

I think he just grudges any sort of recognition for a film with a positive (or even neutral) portrayal of an oppositional mindset.

this thread seems to be rapidly descending into the cess pit. On a lighter note, Gibson looks like Saddam Hussein.. all he needs are some Doritos!

Actually I think the thread was doing fine until that little gem of a contribution.

Wallace: "You can take our land, but you can't take our national history! That's saved for the Americans you know..."

Generic Noble: "Americans you say? Never heard of them. Hrmm... but we wouldn't need to bother with you if we just went across the sea and sent all of the debtors and religious terrorists over there... more land for the rest of us then!"

*500 years later*

Shrub: "We have a ten trillion dollar deficit, but god loves us remember that!"

Hey, I would rather have people bastardize my national history via some more-or-less close approximation like Braveheart than, for example some abomination like this. At least Braveheart makes the Scots out to be noble, heroic, drunken savages, as opposed to just savages.

But Sasha the sniper was the coolest guy ever.

Re: It's about time for Mel Gibson to commit himself.
Was that the same sniper that saw Wilson sitting still, and had the bright idea not to use a Bipod, not to steady the rifle, and not to even take a few seconds to aim? F*** me, and he ended up being so damn cock-eyed that he couldn't hit s***.

Still, you have to give credit to the movie for being bold. I mean, what other movie seriously expects an audience to believe that an entire Mechanised Infantry division (including BMPs, and several dozen infantry) can't hit a single guy as he walks briskly out into an open field, and walks back to an awaiting Helecopter without getting a single scratch?

They don't expect you to believe it, just to enjoy watching it.
