Your Favorite Mission And Why?
What is your favorite Freespace mission of all time? This can be from the official campaigns, the user campaigns, the mods, whatever. Which space battle did you just -love-? The mission that made you say "This is the greatest space sim ever"?

My favorite is the ending missions in Capella in Freespace 2. I'm torn between guarding the Bastion and the grand finale. The situation is just so desperate in both cases and everything is riding upon the ability of the pilots to pull through. I just love when you show up at the Bastion and find the escort wing decimated... but I think my favorite is the very ending. The desperate atmosphere and scale of the final battle is amazing, as all these civilian refugee ships struggle to get through the jump node under waves of Shivan attacks, the pilots fighting and dying all over the same... and then the unexpected and terrifying finale. I was killed my first time playing it just because it was so overwhelming my mind could not comprehend what was happening and it took me a while to even begin attempting to reach the jump node.

I've recently been playing through the Derelict campaign and boy... there have been some winners in this one. I'll probably update the list after I replay this gem of a campaign. As far as I'm concerned, Derelict has become my own personal Freespace 3. I'm signing off now to go play the final mission, so wish me luck folks. And do comment on your favorites, I'm curious what battles everyone likes.

Most people would probably site "Into the Lyons' Den" as their favorite.  I would probably site Inferno R1's "Nemesis".  Its fantastically orchestrated to incorporate multiple possibilities and it has infinite playability.  Granted, for me its often one of the most difficult missions to either beat or survive.

Re: Your Favorite Mission And Why?
Into the Lions Den is quite good... it's one of the few Freespace missions that actually has character development, a fair bit of action, and scares the hell out of you the first time.

I can't put my finger to any one of them, but a few missions in Derelict are quite good... perhaps better than ITTLD.

Sync and Transcend, and Homesick as well... I put into a different category... they're more of an interactive sifi drama... quite good but I can't really separate them into missions. The last two missions of Homesick made me feel really horrible... but that was because of the plot development up to that point.

Re: Your Favorite Mission And Why?
Into the lions den - multiplayer version, and touch of fate by cetanu. Lions den because its very very very hard to beat on hard or insane, and it is good to practice against ai in staying alive. Touch of fate just because it kicks ass.

Re: Your Favorite Mission And Why?
Nemesis, from Inferno, one of the best missions I've seen. It's almost a Battle of Endor mission, but Alpha 1 isn't sidelined, and its really difficult on anything above Easy.

In the main campaign maybe even Their Finest Hour, even though it sucked, I really like fighting cruisers for some reason. I hate bombing runs, but blasting cruisers in an Erinyes or Hercules always made my day. Second place, just, is Into the Lion's den (DIVE DIVE DIVE!!!).

Re: Your Favorite Mission And Why?
The legendary Into the Lion's Den, with the no-less legendary DIVE DIVE DIVE :D just the best mission ever, you really feel like being deep behind enemy lines. Also, all those new Sathani and another Knossos, this can really creep you out.

Bearbaiting - you have lots of enenmy fighters on your tail, flak is everywhere, and you try to desperately get a lock on one of those huge-ass BFReds. Along with the music, you feel like it's "OMFG, the end of the world !!!"

As the Lightning Falls - if not for those crappy waypoints, which spoil the fun, the EMP storm is really creating a nice atmosphere. And it's the first time you're given the Erinyes and Kaysers + Tempests - pure pwnage.

Also, the whole Transcend - geeez, now those missions kicked ass. The best FS2 campaign ever made, IMO. Each and every mission is a masterpiece. It's a must play !

Well I don't like Into The Lion's Den so much...

When I played only with OEM,I liked a lot Slaying Ravana,The Great Hunt and Feint! Parry! Riposte!

Actually there isn't a mission of the main FS2 campaign I prefer...I like some missions made by me, however :D

Re: Your Favorite Mission And Why?
I liked the great hunt (where you escort the 2 deimos in the nebula) wherethe ravana first appears, and the mission where you first encounter the sath just because it takes you completely by surprise and youre like omg wut is happening!? Also i liked the one where you have 2 take out the big main guns on the sath, the atmosphere makes it perfect.  DIVE DIVE DIVE was very well dont too, and, IMO the other "everything we know is riding on how this mission plays out, is the last mission of the original freeespace, where you have only a few minutes to blow a superdestroyer as it is in subspace, and the second it emerges, its shields will be back and you'll never be able to stop it afterwards (besides "restart mission" :P )

maneuverable ? pfffft. Look at the Basilisk or Aeshma (i think thats how its spelt) . I dont know what class of fighters they are (Heavy assault), but they fly like a retarded seagull.

Re: Your Favorite Mission And Why?
Another vote for Lion's Den.

However, Rites of Passage in Derelict is the best space shooter mission I have ever played.  My gosh.  So epic.  So many ways to do it.  "Battle of Endor" mission done 100% correctly.  Tons of ships, tons of beams, tons of objectives.  Epic.

and another on lions den.

dunno why but i like taking orders from snipes then any other person on fs2. and that dive dive dive, such an adrenaline rush.

currently i cant complete derelict because of errors, same with homesick and transcend.

so next would have to be, the last mission on jad.

Re: Your Favorite Mission And Why?
Nemesis from Inferno

But I'll add a new honorable mention: The Number of the Beast from Derelict. In case you don't know: that's the "riot" mission where a bunch of pissed off miners and shippers blockade Tau Sigma.

"The Stars are Right" from Derelict. It really scared me when the Nyarla... Nyarthal... when the Lucy activates itself (sorry, but I can't spell that name! It's uber difficult!).

Also Transcend's final mission is extremely good.

Re: Your Favorite Mission And Why?
Lions Den has a lot of atmosphere. It's a real triumph of mission design. I have to admit I do like a couple of my own missions from Raider Wars, but then i was my own target audience so I would wouldn't I. I thought the ground attack mission worked well.

I would go for Love the Treason (leaving aside my own stuff). The basic premise is very neat and the difficulty and gameplay balance are close to perfect in my opinion.

Into the Lion's Den is great at first, but after you play it many times you start to notice some flaws in it. Despite its coolness, it has several instances of rather sloppy mission design.

The unnamed ships, for one. There are three Rakshasas in it with just the meaningless default names. At one point, there is also a wing with three or four waves and something like a five second delay between them. They provide a good way to rack up some kills but look quite silly, especially since they all come in at the exact same spot and usually facing the wrong way. Specifying the player as an arrival location would have done a lot to fix this. At the beginning, there can be more than one conversation in progress and the messages tend to overlap and become confusing to follow. Snipes also calls the Nebiros a cruiser for some reason. :p
