About the chevrons:

I always presumed that there were others on the bases of the gates (the bits that are burried) but I thought the one they shot into the sun had seven when it was spiralling to its doom?

there is 9 chevrons, but for travel within our galaxy we need to use 7 chevrons, and that is all the DHD can provide enough power for. if u actually dig the base of the gate out from its stand u would see the unused chevrons, if u want to travel out of a galaxy u need the 8th chevron with ****  loads more power, the 9th might actually be used for even further distances like to where the ancients are

Right, so that's where they are! I see...  

KMN, my guess is that they didn't want to let any old Tom, ****  and Harry use the most powerful features of the SG - probably reasoning that races advanced enough to have a reason (or to be allowed) to travel such great distances would also be able to figure out a way themselves to harness the extra power.

no the races that use gates widely oftin are capable of makeing them too, they should know about it so the realy-fricking-far-9th symbol is probly just not needed as most of the races useing them have enough problems from useing the normal 7 chevrons

Another thing - you'd think they'd create a computer program to run through and try every possible chevron combination and finding out what goes where (especially with the 9th chevron and all). Have they tried this? you think they would

It probably doesn't matter which are burried, the gate will most likely have some balancing thingy to make the highest one the seventh chevron.

And maybe the ninth chevron doesn't do anything. Maybe it's just there for future expansion of the gate network or as some special feature like using the time travel thingy in some way.
