Does anyone have a GEForce2, and has an extremely noisy griniding sound from the fan?  (sometimes for 5 mins from start, sometimes constantly)

I know the actuall card is vibrating like a bugger with the fan - I've had the case open - but I don't know why, or if its fixable.

It's a ; GeForce2 MX 100/200, 32MB, and I think it's a Jetway board.  I don't really have any other info on it though.

I dunno, the fan on my processor just started doing that...
I think the bearings are shot, probably the same problem with yours...
Get a new fan...

It is new..... only about 1/2 months old.

Yea I'm getting the exact same prob... I replaced the fan that I put on my video card(little handy attachable thing) and the new fan is doing it now... though its not as bad. I found that hitting the computer case sometimes stops the buzzing for a few mins, or sometimes for a whole day  I've gotten used to it though, so it doesn't bother me.

I've done that on my old machine - be careful though, it happened to much and I totalled a PSU unit by hitting it to much...

If the fan is making that much noise then the bearings are going bad.  It does that because its stuck between the stop and start positions.  Normally when you turn your computer off, your fans will come to a halt in a stop position (which is why when you try to spin them when the computer is off that they have a little resistance).  When they come to a halt between start and stop...well, its like trying to ride a bike with a loose tire.  It'll work, but it'll be bumpy as hell and it'll only get worse.

Know any way to fix it offhand?  (I've never been afraid of poking about in my machines guts, I just rebuild my old Pc to sell it on )

It's pretty securely wedged in behind the power unit, but I can just about get in.  (EDIT; no it's not, I was thinking of the motherboard, which is nigh inacessible)

I think it's the board vibrating that's making the actual noise, though.

A good thump does actually help, though - I try to avoid it.

The bearings on my video card finally went a while ago (they were crap virtually from the day I bought it. Taking the thing back was impractical and when it became practical the card was out of warranty since I wasn't aware the place I bought it from only warranted stuff for 6 months.) and what I did was simply replace it with another 40mm ball bearing fan I bought from a hobbyist electronics store. The only difficulties were the replacement fan was thicker than the original and the plug on the fan was different to the one on the card. The first problem was solved by using some longer screws I salvaged from a DB-25 backshell I had and the second by simply plugging it in to my motherboards up until then vacan case fan power/monitor connector.

I have never had this kind of problem, but as Admiral LSD said, you might want to just replace the fan (I did this for my graphics card fan anyway), since they are usually pretty cheap. (under $10)

Well, the audio board / modem card seems to have packed in now- as far as the audio out port, at least -  so I guess I'll have to take it back for inspection.

Yeah, either buy a new fan or take the card back.
