WEllllllllp.............. right now I'm with AT&T and I have a Pantech Laser.

A while back AT&T dropped Data Packages from GoPhones, which is the "plan" I'm on. They told me "If you wish to continue using internet services on your phone, you must switch to a monthly plan".

Which is, of course, a conspiracy so they can make more money. Because before they dropped data packages, GoPhone plans were awesome! (flexible, customizable, and cheap!)

Not too long ago, AT&T sent me more hatemail. I got a text from them saying "by <insert date here> the instant messaging client on your device will no longer be supported. PWN3D"

Even if I switch my phone, I can't afford a monthly plan, and I'm gonna need data support in the Fall.

I really really really like the Pantech Crossover, so what I think I might do is get one of those and have my phone number transferred. Then, I'm gonna see if I can get hooked up with Tracfone, because their plans are cheaper (and better) than AT&T's and Verizon's. I'm pretty sure this will work because Tracfone SIM cards are compatible with AT&T phones (or so I have heard).

What do you think of this idea, HLP?

This is curious. I just checked my GoPhone account, and the option for data packages was still there... And then I clicked the warning flag, and it said, "yep, Mamba's right".

That is perplexing.

I don't know anything about the phones themselves, but if I were you, the order in which I'd carry out your plan is:
1. Call Tracfone (or go online or whatever), see if they have the phone you want.
2a. If yes, buy it, and whatever pay-as-you go plan you want, and make sure they can get you your current phone number.
2b. If no, make sure you can get an unlocked phone of the model you want, and that the tracfone SIM is compatible.
3. Buy the phone/SIM, and have Tracfone take over your current phone number and put it on the SIM.
4. That should be basically it. When Tracfone sends either your SIM or your phone with SIM, it should automatically have the phone number as soon as you activate the SIM card.
5. Profit!

Source: That's the same basic process I went through to transfer to AT&T from another carrier, using my unlocked Blackberry.

I think we should get back at them by performing a Denial of Service attack on AT&T's severs.

Smart move, recording such a statement for posterity. If something like that does happen soon, you better know just who the Feds will look at first...
