Cheap arm devices with high potential
I was searching the other day on amazon after my friend purchased a really tiny tablet for $60. On amazon i decided to hit price low to high. Then i was pleasantly surprised for $30 i could get a netbook for that cheap. It's the sylvania synet07wicv with 2 gigs flash, 512 ram, 3 usb's, ethernet, wireless, sound out, sound in, with speakers, and of course the wm8650 arm processor. For all of that portability, and that cheap (i'm in heaven). I could turn this into one hell of a low powered server if i didn't feel like bringing it around with me.

It's ****ing cheapo tablet hardware in netbook form. **** touch screens. It came with windows ce 6.0, but i readily wiped that out for the current version of uberoid. Then i bought a 32gb sd card for booting linux from (considering booting from outside storage, they only boot from the memory card reader, yes it has that too(uberoid is a fallback os, modroid sucks, i at least find uberoid usable)). Going to toss on the sd card with the arm release of bodhi linux. Android's alright if you have to use it, linux will truly make it usable like my last netbook the 64 bit capable acer aspire one. I traded my old and great netbook for an 86 dodge lancer es (mpi, 2.2l 4liter, and chrysler turbo one system). That netbook sure was nice, it was my only computer for 2 years, and man could i get away with stuff on that thing that people wouldn't normally use a netbook for.

This new arm netbook will serve the main purpose as the old one...as soon as linux is on it (just something mobile to bring around to surf the net and instant message with). Get one of these while their still available. I bought mine used, but they are still that low of price. They have very low ratings on amazon and else where, but in the minds of us around here when you can switch the os, and even dual boot with them; for $30 i said hell yes; the people who posted low ratings don't know what they're talking about. The only down side is no video out of any kind (maybe that can be solved with a certain usb adapter that has an arm driver for linux). It even makes the awesome portable linux terminal/server. There's only one other device i can think of that makes an even more portable linux terminal/server only if you feel like dealing with wireless only.

The zipit z2 has wireless b and g, sound out, speakers, and an sd mini slot. It's a terminal, and also people have given it a gui too. I don't remember the exact details of the arm processor in it. But, people still develop linux for the device, and back in the day i was using debian sid on it no problem. The zipit z2 can be had for $10 or cheaper these days. It made a fun portable emulation console, instant messaging, and an extremely low power downloader for torrenting or downloading anything (why have power hungry devices download large files when you could have this thing do it). Unfortunately i have no need for my own server yet. This device was built with instant messaging in mind, but the default software didn't let you connect to much, so it was a bunch of fun to extend the capabilities of the original purpose with the console version of pidgin. Even the makers of the device will encourage messing with it. I got rid of mine when i owed my buddy $50, he asked specifically for the zipit z2 as equivalent pay back (he liked it a lot, he likes ****ing with ****, as soon as i showed him linux, he ****s it with to see what it can do to break it sometimes use it (he liked it over re-installing windows with all of the drivers and bull****; among using a computer his other hobby is seeing what will break an installation)). These two devices are super cool. Check them out.

Re: Cheap arm devices with high potential
ive already decided that since i dont like any of the mainline arm operating systems, and that i haven't invested any time, effort, or money in any software for those operating systems, i would just go with a linux on that platform. ive had pretty good luck with raspian on my pi. would love to have one of these terminal type devices but i really would need to have some kind of gpio (or at least a usb host), and i would mostly use it for debugging embedded projects.

when i first saw this topic i thought you meant devices you could keep on your arm

I think the devices in the Arm Arsenal who have the highest potential compared to their cost are:

arm == advanced risc machines

the architecture used on almost every portable device (and currently dominating the high performance microcontroller market).

To be fair, you could probably strap the smallest one to your arm. :) Could be a fun idea, if somewhat cumbersome.

Hey, arm is what it is. It is what is out there on the market for cheap. and if it can boot linux. then i consider it a great product. Being able to hack something to run the software you want to run is a big plus. For those to say to say no, then i will appreciate what this device brings.
