  • A one hit wonder, you still want to touch this.
This is cooler and worth more taking a look at.
I cancelled the raspberry pi idea for the cubieboard 2.

It's essentially the same thing as raspberry pi except faster (even the cubieboard 1 was faster), has a few more things going for it, has lack of rc video, and doesn't require proprietary software to setup. Still going after my low power computing idea.

These are pretty cool and worth taking a look at (not really).

Be warned that if you want hardware MPEG-2 and VC-1 decode, you have to purchase a license from them.

As a simple HTTP server it is sufficient, although PHP heavy pages such as ones used by OwnCloud are just a bit too much for it. If I had a choice now, I would have probably bought a Beagle Board instead, since the Raspberry Pi's advantage over it is its GPU, which I really don't use.

the primary function of my raspberry pi is making me feel guilty about not being able to come up with any actual use for it
The good Christian should beware of mathematicians, and all those who make empty prophecies. The danger already exists that the mathematicians have made a covenant with the devil to darken the spirit and to confine man in the bonds of Hell.

Wait. I can't see it.

*brings a microscope*

Ah. much better.

A fancy device it is. Setting a server with it is a simple job: you take an ATX power source, USB charger, 2 USB hubs ( :nervous: ), several HDDs,wi-fi card and you have a cool data storage. Someone please make a 50 cm long Orion and put the stuff in it :P .

I cancelled my order. Found out the raspberry pi isn't totally open. The video driver blob, and the booting blob, not to mention the closed software that you have to use when making images for the computer.

Passing on this. Checking out beagle boards, olimex, cubieboard.

I may have access to a 3D printer, I don't mind trying something if someone helps out with a 3D model...

I was just looking for a picture of what it has, unfortunately only in humongous size :drevil:

After cancelling my order for the raspberry pi, i ordered the cubieboard 2. Non-monstrous image time...

The cubieboard 2 is dual core where the cubieboard 1 is single core. The single core version is faster than the raspberry. It's very similar to raspberry pi, except 1gb of ram, 4gb onboard flash, micro instead of full size sd, faster processor, power button, sata, no rc video output, and better processor. It also doesn't suffer from any proprietary closed software, which will make working on this thing a lot easier.

have pi, hate it. too many wires. ^this board looks ok. especially like that it has a mother****ing barrel jack instead of a microusb power connector (ive been powering my pi with a ubec plugged into the gpio). speaking of gpio, that board has a lot. also like the sata interface.

if i use pi for anything it will be to put robots on my network. stick a wifi dongle and webcam in the usb ports, and a custom motor/servo controller on the gpio. thats really the only thing i can think of doing with it.

This thing's going to be cool. I can do 3d gaming (openarena and nexuiz at least), use as normal computer, and then server. The idea of being able to hijack any tv sounds handy. Well, not every tv, lack of rc :(

For a second there I thought that was a microcontroller board like an STM or something.

i think ive said somewhere that these things are popping up like daisies. if there was one thing raspberry pi did, it was proving that there was a market for small single board embedded systems. its sort of like arduino, everyone wants a slice. the result is a lot of awesome hardware.

speaking of arduino and its clones, heres some x86 'duinos

http://hackaday.com/2013/12/09/the-40-x86-arduino/

no onboard video on either one, but they both have a 1x pcie bus broken out, and with the right kind of adapter, serious video performance for a single board machine.

my opinion of open source with an nda, is that its no different than closed source.

il hack your **** and figure it out on my own and leak it to hacker groups, but i wont sign no nda
